The best car warranty company depends less on the advertised monthly payment than on the contract behind it. An “extended warranty” is usually a vehicle service contract (VSC): an optional agreement that covers only the parts, repairs and services listed in its terms. It is not the same as the original manufacturer’s warranty, and it generally does not cover accidents, routine maintenance, normal wear and tear, or every failure in a covered system.

Based on current comparison research, Endurance is the strongest overall choice among the providers reviewed, while Olive stands out for transparent, consumer-friendly terms. CarShield can be competitive for some newer or high-mileage vehicles, but its broker structure, variable pricing and regulatory history warrant extra scrutiny. Premier Auto Protect and CARCHEX have useful features, but buyers should pay close attention to the administrator and the exact contract being sold.

Best car warranty companies at a glance

Company Best for Important strengths Important cautions
Endurance Best overall Several plan levels, online quotes, sample agreements and a broad exclusionary option Higher cost per mile and month in testing; prior authorization and contract limits apply
Olive Best consumer-friendly terms No waiting period in the comparison; online purchase, chat and adjustable deductibles Only three plan levels; emergency repairs must be reported by the next business day
CarShield Potentially lower cost for some vehicles Multiple plan types, including electric-vehicle coverage Phone-only quotes, third-party administration, variable month-to-month pricing and a $10 million FTC settlement in 2024
Premier Auto Protect 24/7 claim filing Live claims operator available around the clock in testing; $100 deductible recorded Plan names differed between its website and sample contract
CARCHEX Comparing multiple contract options Sample contracts for five plan options Broker rather than claims payer; reviewed coverage was similar to a CarShield quote

These are category recommendations, not guarantees. Quotes vary with the vehicle’s age, mileage, make, model, location, coverage level, deductible and contract term. The research behind these rankings used selected vehicle profiles and quotes gathered in October 2025, so it cannot establish what any particular reader will pay.

1. Endurance: best overall

NerdWallet gave Endurance 5.0 stars and named it its best overall provider in a comparison published February 6, 2026. The evaluation included quotes, sample contracts and sales calls rather than relying only on advertising.

Endurance offers online quotes and sample agreements. Its listed plans include Supreme, Superior, Secure, Secure Plus, Select Premier, Advantage and Supreme for Highline Vehicles. That range makes it easier to compare powertrain, stated-component and exclusionary coverage for different vehicles.

In NerdWallet’s review, the exclusionary plan had a $100 deductible and no fixed aggregate dollar limit. That does not mean unlimited claims: total benefits cannot exceed the vehicle’s average-condition trade-in value under J.D. Power at the time of repair.

The waiting-period wording deserves special attention. NerdWallet recorded 30 days or 1,000 miles, while Endurance’s own FAQ describes the usual requirement as 30 days and 1,000 miles, whichever comes later. The contract controls, so do not rely on a salesperson’s shorthand. A failure that existed before purchase or began during the waiting period may be excluded even if the breakdown becomes obvious later.

Endurance’s sample contract also requires prior authorization. It says claims will not be paid without it, and NerdWallet identified two additional drawbacks: the plan may not cover damage to a non-covered component caused by a covered component, and teardown used to diagnose a breakdown may not be covered.

2. Olive: best for consumer-friendly terms

Olive received 4.5 stars from NerdWallet and was selected for best consumer-friendly terms. It offers online quotes, lets customers change the deductible, supports online purchase and provides chat-based communication.

Olive was the only provider in the comparison with no waiting period. Its plans are Complete Care, Powertrain Plus and Powertrain. Deductible options were $100, $250 and $500.

Its strongest feature is contract transparency. Olive’s terms identify the national labor-rate guides used to calculate labor limits. That matters because a contract may pay only up to a specified labor rate, leaving the customer responsible for the difference if a shop charges more.

There are trade-offs. Olive has only three plan levels and uses a third-party claims administrator. Its terms require emergency, unauthorized repairs to be reported by the next business day, a shorter deadline than some other contracts. A claim can become difficult if a vehicle is repaired first and the administrator is contacted later.

Olive’s quotes were comparatively inexpensive for newer non-luxury vehicles in NerdWallet’s testing, but among the most expensive for a newer luxury vehicle. That makes it especially important to obtain a vehicle-specific quote rather than assuming the no-waiting-period feature will be a bargain.

3. CarShield: a possible low-cost option, with significant caveats

NerdWallet rated CarShield 4.0 stars and selected it for low cost per mile for newer cars. That result came from quotes collected in October 2025; it is not a price guarantee.

CarShield does not provide online quotes. Customers must call, and CarShield acts as a broker: third parties administer the plans. Listed plan types include Diamond, Platinum, Gold Select, Silver, Aluminum and Electric Vehicle.

The reviewed contracts had waiting-period combinations of either 30 days and 1,000 miles or 90 days and 200 miles, with the applicable combination met first. NerdWallet recorded typical deductibles of $250, increasing to $500 for engine replacement and transmission replacement or rebuild. One luxury-sedan quote also had a $500 deductible.

Month-to-month pricing can increase over time, so compare the total expected cost rather than only the initial payment. NerdWallet also reported that unauthorized emergency repairs were limited to $500 per breakdown under the reviewed contract.

CarShield’s regulatory history should be part of any buying decision. In 2024, CarShield and American Auto Shield paid $10 million to resolve Federal Trade Commission charges alleging deceptive and misleading advertising and telemarketing. The FTC said consumers were led to believe that repairs, rental cars and repair-shop choice were more broadly covered than the contracts allowed. The settlement does not mean every current contract is identical, but it is a reason to demand the actual agreement and verify its limitations.

4. Premier Auto Protect: best for 24/7 claim intake

Premier Auto Protect earned a 3.5-star rating from NerdWallet and was selected for 24/7 claim filing. In testing, a live claims operator was available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

That feature is useful when a vehicle fails outside business hours, but around-the-clock intake is not the same as approval. Premier uses third-party claims administration, and the administrator still applies the contract’s exclusions, authorization rules and payment limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Premier does not offer online quotes; customers must call or email. NerdWallet also found that product names in its sample contracts did not match names shown on the website. Before paying, ask for the exact contract identification number, the obligor, the administrator, the deductible and the cancellation terms in writing.

The reviewed quote included some hybrid and electric-vehicle coverage and a $100 deductible. Whether that is competitive depends on the vehicle and the details of the plan.

5. CARCHEX: useful access to several plans, but know who handles the claim

CARCHEX provides sample contracts for five plan options, but prospective buyers must call for quotes. It is a broker selling contracts administered by third parties; CARCHEX does not necessarily decide or pay claims.

In NerdWallet’s review, the CARCHEX and CarShield coverage was nearly identical because both quotes came from American Auto Shield, although the CARCHEX quote was slightly higher. This illustrates why comparing brand names alone can be misleading. Two marketers may sell contracts backed by the same administrator and with very similar exclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reviewed CARCHEX options had waiting periods of either 30 days and 1,000 miles or 90 days and 200 miles. Deductibles were generally $250, with $500 applying to certain major repairs. The aggregate limit was tied to vehicle value or $15,000, whichever was greater, per monthly term.

NerdWallet also reported a discrepancy between CARCHEX’s advertised BBB A+ rating and a BBB website notice concerning inaccurate advertising of BBB affiliation. That reported discrepancy is not proof that every CARCHEX contract is defective, but it is a reminder that a BBB rating cannot replace reading the agreement and checking the claims structure.

How to compare a car warranty contract

Use this process before giving a provider payment information:

  1. Check existing coverage. Review the manufacturer warranty, certified-preowned warranty, recall coverage and any service contract already included with the vehicle. Buying overlapping protection wastes money.
  2. Request the full sample contract. Do not buy from a company that refuses to show the agreement before payment. Marketing terms such as “bumper-to-bumper” or “covered system” are not enough.
  3. Identify the coverage type. Exclusionary coverage pays for everything except listed exclusions. Named-component coverage pays only for listed parts. Powertrain coverage generally focuses on the engine, transmission and drivetrain. A wrap plan supplements an existing powertrain warranty.
  4. Find the waiting-period language. Look specifically for “and,” “or,” “whichever comes later” and “whichever comes first.” These words can change when coverage begins.
  5. Locate the claims procedure. Confirm who must call, whether the repair shop must obtain authorization, whether teardown is covered and what happens during an emergency breakdown.
  6. Calculate the all-in cost. Add the down payment, every scheduled monthly payment, deductibles, uncovered diagnostics, labor-rate differences and likely exclusions. Ask whether the monthly price can rise.
  7. Check the limits. Look for per-repair limits, labor-rate caps, rental-car and roadside caps, and an aggregate ceiling based on retail, trade-in or another vehicle value.
  8. Confirm maintenance duties. Keep receipts and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Some contracts can deny claims when the owner cannot show required maintenance or continued driving worsened the failure.
  9. Review cancellation and transfer rules. Check the cancellation deadline, refund calculation, whether paid claims reduce the refund, any notarization requirement, transfer fees and lender requirements.

Who actually pays a claim?

A company selling a plan may be a marketer or broker rather than the company making the claims decision. The administrator reviews the repair, applies the contract and authorizes payment. Another company may provide the contractual backing or insurance.

Ask these four questions in writing:

  • Who is the contract obligor?
  • Who administers and approves claims?
  • Who pays the repair facility?
  • Which repair shops are authorized or willing to accept the plan?

Repair-shop choice is not automatically unlimited. The FTC reported that many CarShield customers could not use their preferred facility because shops would not accept the VSC. Call a trusted shop before purchasing and ask whether it has worked with the named administrator.

When an extended warranty may not be worth it

A service contract may be poor value when the vehicle is reliable, inexpensive to repair, already covered by a manufacturer warranty, or likely to be sold before the contract produces meaningful protection. Instead of paying a monthly premium, some owners may prefer an emergency repair fund held in a savings account.

That choice is not risk-free. A single engine, transmission, hybrid-system or luxury-vehicle repair can cost far more than the reserve. The relevant comparison is not “premium versus zero,” but the contract’s total cost and likely out-of-pocket exposure versus the amount you can afford to self-insure.

California buyers need a separate check

California treats vehicle service contracts, dealer-obligor contracts and mechanical breakdown insurance differently. The California Department of Insurance advises residents to verify the company and contract and to watch for unlicensed providers.

Some providers sell mechanical breakdown insurance in California rather than the VSC product offered elsewhere. Confirm exactly what product you are buying, who is licensed to sell it and who makes claims decisions. Do not assume that a quote or plan name used in another state applies in California.

Common car warranty mistakes

  • Assuming “covered system” means every part in that system is covered. Exclusions and named components control.
  • Starting repairs before authorization. A contract may deny the entire claim if the administrator was not given the required opportunity to inspect or approve the work.
  • Focusing on the monthly payment. A low initial payment can hide a long contract term, a rising rate, a $250–$500 deductible or a vehicle-value claim limit.
  • Treating roadside assistance or rental benefits as repair coverage. Those benefits usually have daily, event or total-dollar caps.
  • Trusting a warranty robocall. Unsolicited “your warranty is expiring” messages commonly come from marketers unrelated to the vehicle’s manufacturer or dealer.
  • Assuming a BBB rating predicts claim approval. Read the obligor, exclusions, administrator rules and complaint history instead.

Research note: The provider comparisons referenced here include NerdWallet’s 2026 analysis, ConsumerAffairs’ current 2026 list, Federal Trade Commission guidance and provider contract disclosures. FAQ

What is the best car warranty company overall?

Endurance is the strongest overall choice in the current comparison used for this guide, earning 5.0 stars from NerdWallet. However, the best option for an individual driver depends on the vehicle, contract exclusions, deductible, waiting period, administrator and total cost.

Is an extended car warranty worth it?

It can be worthwhile if a major repair would create financial hardship and the contract provides meaningful coverage for your vehicle. Compare the full contract cost with an emergency repair fund, and account for deductibles, labor limits, diagnostics, claim caps and exclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use any mechanic with a car warranty?

Not always. A contract may require an authorized facility or prior approval, and some repair shops may refuse to work with a particular administrator. Confirm the shop-choice rule in the contract and with your preferred mechanic before buying.

What should I do before filing a warranty claim?

Stop driving if continued operation could worsen the problem, contact the administrator, use the required repair facility and obtain authorization before teardown or repairs. Keep maintenance records, estimates and all claim-related communications.

Are car warranties really warranties?

Usually not. Most products marketed as extended warranties are vehicle service contracts, which are optional agreements covering only listed repairs and services. Manufacturer warranties are separate and may already cover some of the same failures.

Are third-party car warranties safe to buy?

Some can provide useful protection, but the seller may be a broker while a different administrator approves and pays claims. Review the sample contract, identify every company involved, verify cancellation rules and avoid any seller that will not provide terms before payment.

The Bottom Line

Start with Endurance if you want the broadest current comparison-based recommendation, or Olive if no waiting period and online transparency matter most. Treat CarShield, Premier Auto Protect and CARCHEX as contract-specific options rather than automatic bargains, especially where a broker or third-party administrator is involved.

Before buying, obtain the agreement, identify the claims payer, confirm the waiting-period wording, ask whether your repair shop accepts the plan and calculate the total cost including deductibles and limits. If the seller will not answer those questions in writing, keep your money and build—or preserve—an emergency repair fund instead.
