It can still be useful for viewing old accounts, maintaining historical records, and entering transactions manually—but it is not a modern banking app. It does not activate online, download transactions automatically, retrieve stock quotes, or restore Microsoft’s discontinued financial services.
The program was designed for older versions of Windows. Many users report running it on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but that is an unsupported compatibility workaround rather than a guarantee from Microsoft.
What Microsoft Money Plus Sunset Deluxe is
Microsoft discontinued its retail Money Plus Essentials, Deluxe, and Premium products and released Sunset Deluxe in 2010 as a free replacement. The separate Money Plus Sunset Home & Business edition replaced Money Plus Home & Business.
The commonly circulated U.S. Deluxe installer is named USMoneyDlxSunset.exe. The frequently reported program version is 17.0.120.3817. Sunset was created to remove the product-activation requirement that affected the paid Money Plus editions.

That means Sunset Deluxe does not ask for an activation key. Entering an old Money Plus product key will not restore the retired activation system.

A bank may still offer a downloadable file that Money can import, but that is a manual process. Sunset itself does not maintain an online banking connection.
Is Microsoft Money Sunset Deluxe compatible with Windows 10 or 11?
Microsoft’s historical support target was older Windows releases, particularly Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are not officially supported targets for this discontinued software.
Nevertheless, successful installations on Windows 10 and Windows 11 are commonly reported. If the installer or program behaves incorrectly, try Windows 7 compatibility mode:
- Right-click the Money shortcut or installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for:.
- Select Windows 7.
- Click Apply, then OK.
This setting may help with installation or startup problems, but it does not turn Sunset into a supported Windows 11 application. Keep current backups of your Money data and avoid making your only copy dependent on an old program.
How to install Money Plus Sunset Deluxe
Microsoft no longer provides the Sunset installer on its active Download Center pages. Current copies are generally obtained from third-party archives, including archived copies referenced in Microsoft Q&A discussions. Microsoft does not guarantee the safety or integrity of those files, so treat every download as untrusted until you have scanned it.
- Obtain the complete Sunset Deluxe installer from a reputable archive. The package should include
setup.exeand the other setup files. - Scan the downloaded file with up-to-date antivirus software.
- Right-click the installer, choose Properties, and select Unblock if that option is displayed.
- Right-click the installer again and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the setup wizard.
- Launch Money using the installed shortcut, not an executable copied from the download folder.
Do not simply copy a Money program directory from another computer. Money needs a normal installation, including the setup and registration steps that a migration utility may not reproduce.
Fixing the “You must run setup.exe” error
The message You must run setup.exe before running Microsoft Money
usually means that Money was not installed correctly. Common causes include:

- A partial or corrupted download
- A package extracted without all its setup files
- Antivirus software interrupting the installation
- Insufficient permissions
- An executable copied from another computer
- A PC-migration tool transferring files but not installation registration
The practical fix is to remove the incomplete installation and start again with the complete installer package. Confirm that setup.exe is present before running the installation, and use Run as administrator. If a migration tool created the shortcut, do not assume the program was properly installed.
Moving an existing Money file to a new computer
Money normally uses two important file types:

- Open Money on the old computer.
- Choose File > Backup.
- Create an
.mbfbackup on a separate drive or other trusted location. - Install Sunset Deluxe normally on the new computer.
- Copy the backup file to the new computer.
- In Money, choose File > Restore.
- Open the restored file and check account balances, transactions, categories, reports, and payees.
Keep the original .mny file untouched until you have verified the restored copy. It is also sensible to retain more than one backup location, especially if the file contains years of financial history.
You can use File > Open to open a compatible existing .mny file directly, but a fresh backup is the safer first step when moving between computers or Money versions.
What if the Money file has a password?
If Money opens the file, use File > Password Manager to manage the password or legacy online-account associations. If you cannot open the file because you have forgotten its password, Microsoft provides no supported password-recovery or bypass procedure.
An older backup, a written password record, or another saved copy may be the only practical recovery option. Do not repeatedly experiment on the only copy of the file. Preserve the original and work from duplicates where possible.
Can an older Money CD open a Sunset file?
Do not assume that Money 2002, Money 2005, or another older retail edition can open a file saved by Sunset Deluxe. Users have reported incompatibilities involving later file formats, passwords, and encryption.

The safer direction is generally to open an older Money file with Sunset Deluxe—not to save it in Sunset and expect an older installation to read it afterward. Preserve the original file and backup before converting or resaving anything.
Deluxe versus Home & Business
Sunset Deluxe and Sunset Home & Business are different editions. Sunset Deluxe replaces Money Plus Essentials, Deluxe, and Premium. Sunset Home & Business replaces Money Plus Home & Business.
If the original file contains business-related features, installing Deluxe may omit capabilities needed to work with that data. Match the Sunset edition to the original Money edition where possible.

The filename USMoneyDlxSunset.exe indicates the commonly circulated U.S. Deluxe installer. A U.S. edition should not automatically be treated as suitable for every regional Money file. Files created with U.K. or other localized editions may have different regional settings, formats, or compatibility requirements.
Before attempting a conversion, preserve the old installation and make multiple backups. If the file is important, test the process on a copy rather than the original.

FAQ
Does Microsoft Money Plus Sunset Deluxe need an activation key?
No. Sunset Deluxe was released as an offline replacement that does not require product activation or an activation key.
Can Money Plus Sunset Deluxe connect to my bank?
No. It cannot maintain online banking connections, automatically download statements, synchronize with MSN Money, or provide online bill payment. You may be able to import a file downloaded manually from your bank.
Will Microsoft Money Sunset Deluxe run on Windows 11?

Money Plus Sunset Deluxe remains viable as a local archive and manual personal-finance ledger, not as a connected banking platform. Install the complete package, scan any third-party download, use compatibility mode only when needed, and migrate data through File > Backup and File > Restore. If you need automatic bank feeds, current security updates, or vendor support, you will need modern personal-finance software instead.
