What Best Buy’s M5 MacBook Pro trade-in deal includes
Best Buy’s MacBook deals page describes savings of up to $950 with a qualifying MacBook trade-in. The value depends on the old computer’s exact model, configuration, condition and eligibility. It is not a flat $950 reduction for every M5 MacBook Pro buyer.
Keep three amounts separate when evaluating the offer: the M5 MacBook Pro’s current selling price, the estimate for your old computer, and any promotional bonus. Best Buy’s former additional 10% for Plus and Total members applied to the regular trade-in value, not the new Mac’s full price, and the cited offer ended August 9, 2026. Do not count it unless Best Buy displays a replacement offer in your transaction.
Best Buy sells multiple M5 MacBook Pro configurations, but eligibility can depend on the specific purchase listing and transaction. The cited offer terms exclude online purchases of open-box items and say trade-in credit cannot be applied to open-box or refurbished purchases. Confirm that the configuration is eligible and check the “Sold & shipped by” designation; a third-party marketplace listing may not have the same terms as a product sold directly by Best Buy. Current prices and inventory are shown on Best Buy’s MacBook Pro listings.

How much your old MacBook is worth
Use Best Buy’s trade-in estimator to check the exact device. Older Intel MacBooks and Apple-silicon MacBooks may receive different estimates; eligible Windows laptops may also appear. The estimator is the practical eligibility check: Best Buy says a product it does not list may not be accepted.
The estimate is not a promise until Best Buy assesses the device. Condition, functionality, accessories and documentation can affect the result, and Best Buy says online and in-store values may differ. The cited promotional terms exclude devices that are cracked, water-damaged or unable to power on; the device must be functional and free of account locks.

For illustration only, if a qualifying Mac costs $1,599 and Best Buy ultimately accepts a $300 trade-in, the effective hardware cost would be $1,299 before tax. That $1,599 price was reported at the M5 MacBook Pro’s October 2025 launch, not verified as an August 2026 price; check the live listing instead. A $950 credit against that historical price would imply $649 before tax, but only a device qualifying for the maximum would produce that result. Best Buy’s cited offer terms say sales tax is calculated on the full retail value, not the price after trade-in.
How an online Best Buy trade-in works
- Open Best Buy’s trade-in estimator and search for the exact model. Select its processor, screen size, memory, storage and condition.
- Answer the functionality questions honestly. Record the estimate and the promotion’s terms separately, then select an eligible M5 MacBook Pro listing.
- At checkout, confirm whether the value reduces the amount due immediately or will be issued after inspection. Do not assume the headline trade-in amount is an instant discount.
- Back up and erase the old Mac, then ship it using Best Buy’s instructions and prepaid label. Best Buy’s online FAQ says the device generally must arrive within 14 days of the estimate; late arrival can lead to a revised or withdrawn estimate.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking details. After Best Buy receives and evaluates the Mac, review its assessment. The online FAQ says an electronic gift card may be emailed within five business days after evaluation.
Best Buy generally pays trade-in value by Best Buy Gift Card, although an eligible purchase flow may apply credit directly. The exact timing and form depend on the transaction. Read the checkout terms to see whether you pay the purchase amount first and receive credit only after verification. If the final amount changes, compare Best Buy’s condition assessment with your original answers and the offer terms before deciding what to do next.

How an in-store trade-in works
- Check that your local store participates and ask whether it requires a receipt; some locations may have additional restrictions.
- Bring the MacBook and any accessories the estimator or store requests, along with a valid U.S. state driver’s license or state-issued identification.
- Disable Find My and remove the Mac from your iCloud account before the inspection.
- Let staff assess the device, then review the offered value and how it will be issued before accepting.
Best Buy’s trade-in FAQ says a completed in-store transaction is final. Ask questions and verify the amount before you agree.

- Back up files you want to keep.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and iCloud, disable Find My, and remove the Mac from your account.
- Erase the Mac. Use Erase All Content and Settings where supported; otherwise erase it through macOS Recovery and reinstall macOS.
- Remove stickers and personal labels, and make sure no third-party account lock remains.
- Photograph the laptop’s condition and record its serial number. Save the estimate, promotion terms and, for a shipment, the receipt and tracking number.
- Do not include accessories unless Best Buy’s estimator or store instructions call for them.
Best Buy’s trade-in terms make the customer responsible for removing personal data. Erasing the computer is also a safeguard against exposing files if the estimate changes or the transaction takes longer than expected.

Check the same MacBook model, configuration and condition with Apple Trade In before choosing. For a private-sale comparison, look at comparable listings on Swappa or eBay, and account for fees, shipping and the time needed to complete a sale. A listing price is not the same as a completed sale price.
When the trade-in is worth taking
Best Buy can be a sensible choice when the confirmed credit, combined with the current Mac price, beats your alternatives enough to justify receiving retailer credit instead of cash. Compare the net result with Apple’s current estimate and a realistic private-sale amount, including any fees and the time and risk of selling yourself. If the old Mac is in excellent condition and its private-sale proceeds appear substantially higher, selling separately may be worthwhile.
