For someone new to the field, IIBA’s ECBA is the entry point; experienced analysts can consider CCBA or CBAP, while PMI-PBA may suit project-oriented work. This guide retains its 2023 framing but reflects credential information checked on October 8, 2026. Requirements and fees can change, so confirm them with the issuer before applying.
Which business analyst certification should you get?
Choose based on the work you have done and the work you want to do. IIBA’s ECBA–CCBA–CBAP sequence is a progression from foundational knowledge to documented professional practice. PMI-PBA is another option to investigate if your work is closely tied to projects. No credential is established here as universally preferred, and none guarantees a job, promotion, or salary increase.
- New to business analysis: Consider ECBA to demonstrate foundational knowledge, while building practical examples through project work or a portfolio.
- Practicing analyst with qualifying experience: Check whether your documented hours and professional development meet CCBA requirements.
- Experienced analyst: Consider CBAP if you meet its work-history and professional development requirements.
- Project-oriented role: Review PMI-PBA’s current handbook alongside IIBA credentials, particularly if your organization uses PMI practices.
How the certifications compare
| Credential | Best fit | Eligibility signal | Listed cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIBA ECBA | Aspiring or early-career analyst demonstrating foundational proficiency | IIBA says there are no specific eligibility requirements to sit the exam; candidates must accept its professional conduct and certification terms. | $395 exam fee listed on IIBA’s fee page; check the live page for current pricing. |
| IIBA CCBA | Practitioners with intermediate business analysis experience | 3,750 qualifying business analysis hours, 21 professional development hours, and two references, according to IIBA’s FAQ. | $145 application fee plus $405 exam fee listed; member exam pricing is lower. Check the live page. |
| IIBA CBAP | Experienced business analysis professionals | 7,500 qualifying business analysis hours, 35 professional development hours, and two references, according to IIBA’s FAQ. | $145 application fee plus $505 exam fee listed; member exam pricing is lower. Check the live page. |
| PMI-PBA | Analysts in project-oriented organizations or roles | Consult PMI’s current handbook for eligibility and exam details; detailed requirements were not verified here. | Not stated on the credential page cited here. |
IIBA amounts are in USD, and the organization says fees can change without notice. Application and exam fees are separate for CCBA and CBAP. The eligibility figures are not a substitute for checking how the issuer defines qualifying experience and how it must be allocated across knowledge areas.
IIBA’s FAQ describes ECBA as demonstrating “foundational proficiency in business analysis,” relevant to a range of career pathways and roles. That is the issuer’s description of the credential, not evidence that it replaces applied experience in hiring.

What each IIBA credential is for
ECBA: foundational knowledge
IIBA identifies ECBA as the entry point in its core certification program. With no specific experience requirement to sit the exam, it can be a structured way for aspiring analysts to show foundational knowledge. Pair preparation with practical work or examples: an exam credential alone does not show how you perform in a workplace.
CCBA: documented practice
CCBA is aimed at analysts who can document qualifying experience. IIBA’s FAQ lists 3,750 business analysis hours, 21 professional development hours, and two references. Before applying, review the handbook for the detailed work-history rules and knowledge-area allocation.
CBAP: advanced professional recognition
CBAP is IIBA’s advanced option for established practitioners. The FAQ lists 7,500 qualifying hours, 35 professional development hours, and two references. It is a poor fit for a beginner who cannot document the required practice.
When to consider PMI-PBA
PMI offers the Professional in Business Analysis certification as an alternative for project-oriented work. The available issuer information supports treating it as an option to investigate, not as directly interchangeable with CBAP or as the preferred credential in any particular job market. Check PMI’s handbook for current eligibility and exam details, then compare those requirements with the practices and expectations of your employer or target role.

How to compare cost and career value
Compare the full commitment rather than the exam price alone: application and exam charges, preparation time, professional development, and any renewal obligations. The current IIBA fee page separates application from exam charges for CCBA and CBAP and notes that prices can change. The cited PMI credential page does not establish a comparable cost figure here.
No reliable, directly comparable salary premium or return-on-investment figure is established for these credentials. Treat certification as a way to structure learning or signal knowledge and experience—not a guaranteed financial return. If your employer funds professional development, ask whether it will cover application, exam, or preparation expenses before you commit.

- Choose the credential first. Check the current issuer handbook and confirm you meet its requirements before paying an application or exam fee.
- Use the current exam materials. IIBA says its core certifications align with the BABOK Guide and provides certification handbooks. Match study materials to the edition and exam guidance in the handbook rather than assuming an older reference is current.
- Decide whether structured training will help. IIBA lists endorsed training resources; verify a provider’s current endorsement and course availability directly with IIBA.
- Build evidence of applied ability. Use project examples, work samples, or a portfolio alongside exam preparation so you can show more than a credential when discussing your experience.
The BABOK Guide can be a useful study or reference resource, but the specific current retail edition and whether it is required were not established here. Confirm the edition against the exam handbook before purchasing it.
