The Google Pixel 10a is the best overall budget phone at $499, with strong cameras, IP68 protection and seven years of updates. For less, the Motorola Moto G (2026) is a battery-life pick around $199, while the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G offers an AMOLED screen and six years of support for $199.99.
Research note: The phones below are compared using U.S. prices, specifications and published hands-on testing checked August 9, 2026. Unless noted otherwise, prices refer to new phones and unlocked models where available. We have not independently tested all 10 phones, so test results are attributed to the publications that measured them.
Quick picks: the best budget phones in 2026
| Phone | Best for | U.S. price | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 10a | Best overall | From $499 | Tensor G4 performance is adequate, not class-leading |
| Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | Design, display and camera flexibility | From $499 | Carrier compatibility is less predictable |
| CMF Phone 2 Pro | Most features per dollar | $279 through Nothing’s U.S. Beta Program | Limited U.S. distribution and support need verification |
| Motorola Moto G Power (2026) | Large screen and battery under $300 | $299.99 MSRP | LCD panel and only two Android OS updates |
| Motorola Moto G (2026) | Lowest-cost long-battery option | From $199 | 720p display and performance stutter |
| Samsung Galaxy A17 5G | Affordable AMOLED screen and long support | $199.99 unlocked | 4 GB RAM makes multitasking slow |
| Motorola Moto G Stylus (2026) | Handwriting, headphone jack and storage expansion | About $500-plus | Only two years of OS updates |
| Samsung Galaxy A57 5G | Samsung features below flagship pricing | From $549.99 | Not technically under $500 |
| Apple iPhone 17e | Cheapest current new iPhone | From $599 | 60-Hz display and no ultrawide camera |
| OnePlus 13R | Performance when discounted | Check current sale price | Not a conventional budget phone at full price |
How much should you spend on a budget phone?
“Budget” now covers several very different price bands:
- Under $300: Expect compromises in cameras, displays, software support or performance. The best choices prioritize one or two strengths, such as battery life or screen quality.
- Under $500: This is the most competitive category. Phones such as the Pixel 10a and Nothing Phone (4a) Pro offer better cameras, displays and durability than entry-level models.
- Affordable iPhone: Apple’s cheapest new model, the iPhone 17e, starts at $599. It is the least expensive current iPhone, but it is not a sub-$500 phone.
Price is only one part of value. A phone that costs $100 less but receives updates for four fewer years can be a poor deal if you replace it sooner. Also check whether the advertised price requires a trade-in, carrier financing or a new line. The prices in this guide are intended to reflect the phone’s listed purchase price, not a temporary bill-credit promotion.

1. Google Pixel 10a: best overall budget phone
Price: From $499
The Pixel 10a is the safest recommendation for most buyers who can spend up to $500. Its combination of a 6.3-inch 60–120Hz pOLED display, reliable camera processing, wireless charging, IP68 water and dust resistance, and seven years of operating-system, security and Pixel Drop updates is unusually strong at this price.
The camera system includes a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, but Google’s image processing generally makes the Pixel more dependable for everyday photos than many similarly priced phones.
One important correction: the Pixel 10a uses Google’s Tensor G4, not Tensor G5. It is the same processor generation used in the Pixel 9a. That is sufficient for messaging, streaming, navigation, photography and ordinary games, but it is not the fastest option near $500. The phone also has only 8GB of RAM and relatively thick bezels.
Best for: Buyers who want the fewest major compromises and plan to keep the phone for several years.

Price: From $499
The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro takes a more interesting approach than the typical budget handset. It combines a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, a 144Hz AMOLED display, Nothing’s Glyph Matrix design and a triple-camera setup that includes a 50MP periscope camera.
That periscope camera gives it a practical advantage over the Pixel 10a for subjects at a distance. The high-refresh-rate screen and distinctive hardware also make the phone feel less like a cut-price device.
The financial catch is compatibility. Nothing phones can be less straightforward to use across U.S. carriers than models sold directly by Google, Samsung or Motorola. Confirm the exact U.S. model’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling support before buying. Its water resistance and software-support policy are also less compelling than Google’s.
Best for: Buyers who value design, a fast display and optical zoom more than maximum update longevity.

3. CMF Phone 2 Pro: best feature-per-dollar option
Price: $279 through Nothing’s U.S. Beta Program
On specifications alone, the CMF Phone 2 Pro is one of the most compelling phones below $300. It includes a 120Hz AMOLED display, a telephoto camera, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and microSD expansion—features that are uncommon at this price.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
TechRadar ranked it highly after weeks of real-world use, but its U.S. sales status matters more than a specification comparison. The $279 price is tied to Nothing’s U.S. Beta Program; that is not equivalent to broad retail distribution through major carriers and stores.
Before ordering, verify the return policy, warranty terms, network bands and compatibility with your carrier. A low price is not a bargain if the phone cannot reliably connect to your network or is difficult to return.
Best for: Technically minded shoppers comfortable checking compatibility and buying outside the mainstream carrier channel.
4. Motorola Moto G Power (2026): best large-screen phone under $300
Price: $299.99 MSRP
The Moto G Power (2026) is built around practical hardware: a 6.8-inch 120Hz LCD, a 5,200mAh battery, 8GB of physical RAM, 128GB of storage, microSD expansion up to 1TB and 30W wired charging.
Tom’s Guide testing found nearly 18.5 hours of battery life, making it a strong choice for travel, long workdays or users who do not want to charge every night. The LCD is less vivid than the AMOLED panel on the Galaxy A17, however, and the Dimensity 6300 is not designed for demanding gaming.
Do not carry over specifications from the 2025 model: the 2026 Moto G Power does not have wireless charging. Motorola’s two-year Android OS-update commitment is also short compared with Samsung’s policy on similarly priced phones.
Best for: Buyers who want a big screen and dependable battery life, and care less about display contrast or long-term software support.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Motorola Moto G (2026): best battery life at the lowest price
Price: From $199
The standard Moto G is the value pick for people who care most about battery endurance. Tom’s Guide recorded 19 hours and 10 minutes in its battery test—the longest result among the cheap phones in that comparison.
Motorola lists Android 16, a 5,200mAh battery, a Dimensity 6300 processor, 128GB of storage and microSD expansion. The cameras are usable for basic snapshots, but this is not a performance phone.

- GSM Unlocked: Enjoy seamless connectivity with your preferred GSM carrier. Compatible with T-Mobile, Metro PCS, AT&T, Cricket, Mint Mobile and other GSM networks. SIM card not included. For network compatibility, please check with your carrier. Note: Not compatible with CDMA networks like Verizon (Visible, Spectrum Mobile, US Mobile, Total Wireless, Straight Talk Wireless)
- Boundless Views: Enjoy immersive viewing on the spacious 6.5” HD+ display. Whether you're watching videos, browsing, or gaming, every detail comes through with stunning clarity.
- Smooth Performance, All Day: Powered by an efficient octa-core processor, the G35 ensures smooth performance for your everyday tasks. Enjoy faster app launches, seamless multitasking, and reliable speed.
- Snap, Share, Repeat: The G35 features a dual rear camera setup for sharp, detailed shots, and a front-facing camera that’s perfect for selfies and video calls. Capture every moment with ease and clarity.
- Effortless Access: Keep your phone secure with A.I. Face ID technology. Instantly unlock your G35 with just a glance. It's fast, easy, and secure.
The biggest compromise is the 720p display. Text and images are less sharp than on the Moto G Power or Galaxy A17, and the phone can stutter under heavier workloads. Motorola also promises only two years of Android OS updates. It is a low-cost tool, not the best long-term ownership choice.
Best for: Light users who want maximum battery life while spending about $200.

Price: $199.99 for the unlocked 128GB model
The Galaxy A17 5G offers a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP main camera and six years of software and security support. Its update policy is the standout feature: it can remain secure well after many similarly priced Motorola phones have stopped receiving major updates.
Performance is the reason it is not the universal winner. The U.S. version uses an Exynos 1330 processor and 4GB of RAM. PhoneArena testing found slow camera launching, app switching and web browsing. It is suitable for calls, messages, streaming and light browsing, but heavy multitasking and gaming will be frustrating.
Best for: Light users who want an attractive AMOLED screen and a phone they can keep for years.
7. Motorola Moto G Stylus (2026): best for handwriting and expandable storage
Price: Approximately $500 or more; confirm the current retailer price
The Moto G Stylus earns its place because it solves a specific problem. Its active stylus supports pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, hover functions and shortcuts. The phone also has a headphone jack, a microSD slot, wireless charging, 68W wired charging and IP68/IP69 protection.
Motorola lists 8GB of physical RAM, up to 256GB of internal storage, a 5,200mAh battery and a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor. Those extras can be valuable to students, note-takers and buyers who keep files locally.
It is harder to justify as a general budget phone. The cameras trail the Pixel 10a, the processor is not especially strong and Motorola promises only two years of OS updates. Also, “RAM Boost” is virtual memory taken from storage; it should not be treated as equivalent to 12GB of physical RAM.

Price: From $549.99 for 128GB; $609.99 for 256GB
The Galaxy A57 5G is a capable midrange Samsung phone, but it does not belong in a strict under-$500 list. Its U.S. launch price is $549.99, and the 256GB model costs more.
For that money, it provides a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Plus display, IP68 protection, a 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP camera with optical image stabilization, Wi-Fi 6E, six Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates.
It is a sensible purchase when a sale brings it close to $500, particularly for Samsung users who value support and water resistance. It lacks a dedicated zoom camera and does not offer the flagship-level AI features found on Samsung’s more expensive phones.
Best for: Samsung fans who find it discounted below its normal price.

9. Apple iPhone 17e: best affordable new iPhone
Price: From $599 with 256GB
The iPhone 17e is the cheapest current new iPhone, but calling it a phone under $500 would be inaccurate. Its $599 starting price is before tax and is $100 above the usual budget ceiling.
Its strengths include Apple’s A19 chip, 256GB of base storage, a 48MP Fusion camera, MagSafe, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display and IP68 protection. The increased base storage and MagSafe make it more attractive than earlier budget-oriented iPhone models.
The limitations are familiar: a single rear camera with no ultrawide lens and a 60Hz display. It makes sense if you specifically want iOS, Apple services or long-term resale value, not if you are simply seeking the most hardware for your money.
Best for: iPhone buyers who want the lowest-priced current model and can stretch beyond $500.

10. OnePlus 13R: best performance when sale-priced
Price: Verify the current U.S. sale price
The OnePlus 13R is not an entry-level phone. It has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 12GB of physical RAM, 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, a 6,000mAh battery, a 120Hz LTPO display, 55W charging and a 50MP main camera paired with a 50MP 2x telephoto camera.
That hardware is closer to a former flagship than a typical budget phone. TechRadar has highlighted its two-day battery capability, making it a strong value choice when a retailer discounts it sharply.
Because its current U.S. price must be checked at publication, treat it as a sale-priced pick rather than a fixed member of a sub-$500 ranking. If it costs substantially more than the Pixel 10a, the OnePlus offers more speed but may not offer the best balance of camera quality, software support and ownership cost.
Best for: Performance-focused shoppers who find a confirmed discount.
How to choose a budget phone without wasting money
- Set a real cash ceiling. Decide whether your maximum includes sales tax, a case and a charger. A $499 phone can exceed $550 at checkout in some states once accessories are added.
- Check the unlocked model number. Do not assume an imported or global version works on every U.S. network. Confirm LTE bands, 5G bands, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling with your carrier.
- Prioritize the feature you cannot compromise on. Choose the Moto G for battery life, the Galaxy A17 for its AMOLED screen and support, the Pixel 10a for cameras, or the Moto G Stylus for handwriting.
- Compare update commitments. Samsung’s six-year policy and Google’s seven-year policy can justify paying more than the cheapest Motorola model.
- Separate physical RAM from virtual RAM. A listing that says “8GB RAM plus RAM Boost” does not provide the same multitasking headroom as a phone with 12GB of physical RAM.
- Check the exact promotion. Trade-in credits, financing and carrier discounts can make a premium phone appear cheap while increasing your monthly bill or requiring a new line.
What “tested” means in this comparison
The battery figures cited here come from published testing by outlets such as Tom’s Guide. TechRadar reported weeks of real-world testing for the CMF Phone 2 Pro, and PhoneArena describes in-house testing for several listed devices. Those results are useful, but test methods vary by publication and region.
This is therefore a comparison of phones with attributed test results—not a claim that all 10 were tested by The Finance Base. U.S. versions matter: RAM, storage, processors, network bands, colors and retailer availability can differ between markets.
FAQ
What is the best budget phone in 2026?
The Google Pixel 10a is the best overall choice at $499. It combines strong cameras, a 120Hz pOLED display, wireless charging, IP68 protection and seven years of updates. The Motorola Moto G (2026) is better for battery life at around $199, while the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is better for an AMOLED screen and long support at $199.99.
What is the best phone under $300 in 2026?
The CMF Phone 2 Pro offers the strongest feature set at $279 through Nothing’s U.S. Beta Program, but buyers must verify carrier compatibility, warranty and returns. For a more conventional purchase, the Motorola Moto G Power (2026) costs $299.99 and offers a large 120Hz screen, a 5,200mAh battery and microSD expansion.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs the iPhone 17e a budget phone?
It is the cheapest current new iPhone, but its $599 starting price means it is not a sub-$500 budget phone. It is best described as an affordable iPhone. Its strengths include the A19 chip, 256GB of base storage, MagSafe and a 48MP camera; its main limitations are a 60Hz display and no ultrawide camera.
Should I buy a budget phone unlocked or through a carrier?
An unlocked phone gives you more flexibility to change carriers, but confirm that the exact U.S. model supports your network’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling. Carrier deals can lower the apparent price, but read the terms carefully: many require a trade-in, bill credits over several years or a new line of service.
The Bottom Line
The Pixel 10a is the best all-purpose budget phone if $499 fits your budget. Under $300, choose the Moto G (2026) for maximum battery life, the Galaxy A17 5G for its AMOLED display and six-year support, or the Moto G Power (2026) for a larger, sharper screen. The CMF Phone 2 Pro is potentially the best specification-for-price deal, but its U.S. Beta Program availability means compatibility and warranty checks are essential.
Do not classify the Galaxy A57 5G or iPhone 17e as sub-$500 phones at their listed prices. They can be reasonable sale or platform-specific choices, but the lower price is not worth overlooking software support, network compatibility or the total cost of ownership.
