Short answer: For most shoppers buying in late 2020, the Google Pixel 4a was the best balanced budget Android phone. Choose the Motorola Moto G Power (2020) for exceptional battery life, the OnePlus Nord for performance and a 90Hz display where it was officially sold, and the Samsung Galaxy A51 for Samsung’s software and retail availability.
This is a historical buying guide based on late-2020 prices and product conditions, intended for phones expected to remain useful into 2021. These models are now old, and a phone that was a good buy in 2020 may have reached or passed its security-support period. Treat any used or refurbished listing as an older-device purchase, not as a current 2026 recommendation.

What counted as a budget phone in 2020?
For this guide, “budget” means roughly $150 to $400 in the United States, with comparable regional pricing elsewhere. That range covered several distinct categories:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Ultra-budget: under $150, usually involving major compromises in cameras, storage, performance, and updates.
- Entry-level: $150–$250, suitable for basic communication, streaming, and light apps.
- Mainstream budget: $250–$400, where better cameras, OLED screens, faster processors, and stronger software support became available.
- Value mid-range: roughly $400–$500, offering performance or 5G advantages but no longer being strictly low-cost.
A $400 phone and a $150 phone were not interchangeable. The cheaper model might offer longer battery life or expandable storage, while the more expensive phone could provide a better camera, display, processor, and update outlook.

Quick verdict

1. Google Pixel 4a: best overall
The Google Pixel 4a was the safest recommendation for most buyers in late 2020. It launched at $349 in the United States and combined a strong camera, OLED display, compact design, clean Android software, 128GB of storage, and a headphone jack. Google announced at least three years of Android-version and security updates for the phone at launch.
Its camera advantage came primarily from Google’s image processing, not from a large camera count. The single rear camera produced consistently good daylight and low-light photographs, useful HDR, and natural-looking results for a phone in this price range. More cameras on a cheaper phone did not automatically make that phone better.
Strengths
- Excellent computational photography for the price.
- OLED screen with strong contrast.
- Compact and relatively easy to use one-handed.
- Clean Android interface with limited preinstalled software.
- 128GB base storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
- Clearer update commitment than many low-cost rivals.
Weaknesses
- No 5G.
- Battery life was adequate rather than exceptional.
- Not the best choice for demanding games or sustained heavy multitasking.
- No microSD card slot.
- Plastic construction and no wireless charging.
Buy it if: camera quality, software simplicity, compact size, and dependable updates matter most.

Historical buying advice: It was a strong new purchase at its 2020 price. Today, only consider one if the exact device condition, remaining security support, battery health, unlocked status, and return policy are clear.
Google’s announcement lists the original price and update commitment. Period reviews from WIRED and Android Authority provide additional camera, battery, and performance context.
2. Motorola Moto G Power (2020): best battery value
The Moto G Power (2020) was the battery specialist. Its 5,000mAh battery, low launch price of about $249, headphone jack, and microSD support made it attractive to people who valued endurance over camera quality or speed.
Battery capacity alone does not determine endurance: processor efficiency, screen size, brightness, signal strength, and usage all matter. Nevertheless, the Moto G Power’s combination of a large battery and modest hardware made it one of the strongest choices for long use between charges.
Trade-offs
- The LCD screen lacked the contrast of the Pixel 4a and Galaxy A51’s OLED panels.
- Its camera was less consistent, especially in difficult lighting.
- Performance was sufficient for ordinary apps but not ideal for demanding games.
- Motorola’s budget-phone update record was weaker than Google’s.
- It had no 5G or wireless charging.
Buy it if: you want the longest practical battery life for the least money and need microSD storage.
Skip it if: photography, fast gaming, OLED quality, or long-term software support is your top priority.

Historical buying advice: It was sensible to buy new or heavily discounted in 2020. A refurbished example now needs careful battery inspection because an old 5,000mAh battery may have lost substantial capacity.
3. OnePlus Nord: best performance and display outside the U.S.
The OnePlus Nord offered a Snapdragon 765G processor, 5G, a 90Hz AMOLED display, and fast charging. It launched from £379 in the United Kingdom, with regional pricing elsewhere.
For gaming, scrolling, and multitasking, its higher-end chipset and 90Hz screen gave it a clear experience advantage over the Pixel 4a. Its cameras were capable, but the Pixel’s image processing was generally more consistent, particularly for point-and-shoot photography.
The major qualification is geography: the original Nord was not officially sold in the United States at launch. Importing one could create problems with LTE bands, 5G bands, VoLTE activation, warranty service, returns, and carrier compatibility.
Buy it if: you lived in a supported market and prioritized performance, smooth display motion, and 5G.

Skip it if: you were in the U.S., needed simple warranty support, or intended to keep the phone for several years without compromising on updates.
Historical buying advice: Buy new through an officially supported regional channel rather than importing an unknown model. A used import should identify the exact model number and supported bands.

4. Samsung Galaxy A51: best Samsung alternative
The Galaxy A51 was a reasonable choice for shoppers who preferred Samsung’s interface, services, retail network, and accessory ecosystem. Its U.S. launch price was about $399.99, although it commonly fell to roughly $300–$325 later.
Its AMOLED display, expandable storage, broad availability, and versatile camera array were appealing. However, the phone’s processor was less competitive than the Pixel 4a and OnePlus Nord at comparable sale prices. Samsung’s interface also included more preinstalled software than Google’s version of Android.

Skip it if: you want the fastest performance or the best point-and-shoot camera for the money.
Historical buying advice: The discounted $300–$325 price made more sense than its original $400 positioning. Today, a used unit should be purchased only with a clear support horizon and return window.

The OnePlus Nord N10 5G paired 5G, a 90Hz display, a large battery, microSD support, and an appealing specification sheet at a lower price than many 5G phones.
Its decisive weakness was software longevity: OnePlus committed to only one major Android-version update. That made it a poor choice for buyers planning several years of ownership, even if the hardware looked impressive at purchase.
Buy it if: you wanted inexpensive 5G and expected a short ownership period.
Skip it if: you keep phones for three or four years, value major Android updates, or can buy a better-supported 4G phone at a similar price.
Do not confuse a large battery, 5G modem, or 90Hz panel with long-term value. Security-patch timing, major-version support, battery condition, and carrier compatibility matter just as much.
6. Motorola Moto G Stylus (2020): best for basic pen input
The Moto G Stylus (2020) included an integrated stylus, large screen, headphone jack, microSD support, and reasonable battery life. It was useful for quick notes, rough annotations, and selecting small items on screen.
Its stylus was not equivalent to Samsung’s S Pen. It lacked the deeper software integration and precision features that made Samsung’s premium stylus phones distinctive. Camera quality and update support were also less compelling than the Pixel 4a’s.

Camera, battery, performance, and display: what matters most?
Camera
Compare the main sensor and image processing rather than megapixel counts. Look for natural skin tones, reliable HDR, night performance, stabilized video, and useful video resolution. Ultrawide cameras can be valuable; macro and depth cameras often add little. The Pixel 4a’s single main camera was a good example of software and sensor quality beating a crowded specification sheet.
Battery and charging
The Moto G Power was the historical winner for endurance, but long battery life did not compensate for a weak camera or limited updates for every buyer. Also consider charging speed, wireless charging, whether the battery is user-replaceable, and the likely cost and availability of replacement service.
Performance and gaming
The OnePlus Nord’s Snapdragon 765G was better suited to demanding games and multitasking than the Pixel 4a’s Snapdragon 730G-class platform. RAM amount, storage speed, thermal behavior, and sustained performance matter more than a brief benchmark burst. Entry-level processors may handle messaging and video well but age faster under heavier workloads.

Display
OLED and AMOLED panels offer deeper blacks and higher contrast than LCD. A 90Hz panel, such as the Nord’s, makes scrolling and animation feel smoother than 60Hz. However, screen brightness, pixel density, size, and one-handed comfort also matter. Some users sensitive to OLED PWM flicker may prefer LCD.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4G versus 5G in 2020
5G was not essential for most budget buyers in 2020. Coverage varied by carrier and location, and low-band 5G did not always deliver a noticeable speed improvement over LTE.
A 5G phone made sense when the price premium was small and the device was otherwise strong. It did not make sense to sacrifice camera quality, update support, or carrier compatibility merely for a 5G badge. Different 5G variants could also have different processors, cameras, dimensions, and support policies.
The Pixel 4a 5G should be treated as a separate phone rather than a 5G-enabled Pixel 4a. It had a larger battery and a different performance and price profile.

Pixel 4a versus Galaxy A51
The Pixel was the better choice for camera consistency and clean software. The Galaxy was preferable for Samsung services, expandable storage, AMOLED display, and widespread retail availability.
Pixel 4a versus OnePlus Nord
The Nord won on processor performance, refresh rate, 5G, and charging. The Pixel won on camera simplicity, software experience, U.S. convenience, and clearer update expectations.
OnePlus Nord versus Nord N10 5G
The original Nord was the stronger performance phone. The N10 5G was cheaper and retained attractive features, but its one-major-update policy made it substantially weaker for long-term ownership.
Moto G Power versus Moto G Stylus
Choose the Power for maximum endurance and the Stylus for pen input. Neither was the best choice for photography or update longevity.
New, refurbished, or used?
A discounted older mid-range phone could outperform a new entry-level phone, but used purchases carry additional risks:
- Degraded batteries or expensive replacement service.
- Screen burn-in, scratches, or damaged charging ports.
- Carrier locks, unpaid-device restrictions, or activation locks.
- Missing accessories or uncertain repair history.
- Short or expired software-support periods.
For refurbished devices, require an explicit return period and a stated battery-health or battery-replacement policy. Confirm that the previous owner removed the phone from their Google account. Remember that update promises usually run from launch, not from the date you buy a phone years later.
U.S. carrier and compatibility checklist
Before buying, verify the exact model number rather than relying on the phone’s marketing name. Check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Compatibility with Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile.
- Supported LTE, VoLTE, and—if relevant—5G bands.
- Whether the phone is factory unlocked or tied to a carrier.
- eSIM and dual-SIM support if needed.
- NFC for contactless payments.
- USB-C rather than an older connector.
- microSD support and actual internal storage.
- Return, warranty, and repair terms.
Regional versions of the Galaxy A51, Moto G Power, and OnePlus Nord could differ in RAM, storage, processor, bands, and software. Do not assume an imported OnePlus Nord will work properly on a U.S. carrier or receive local warranty service.
Final recommendation
For a late-2020 purchase intended to last into 2021, buy the Pixel 4a for the best overall balance, especially if camera quality and software support matter. Buy the Moto G Power if battery endurance is your overriding priority. Choose the OnePlus Nord only in a market where it was officially sold and supported, and only if performance and display smoothness mattered more than long-term updates. Choose the Galaxy A51 for Samsung’s ecosystem and retail availability, not because it was the fastest phone at its price.
Because these are 2020 models, check current support status and the exact condition of any used or refurbished listing before spending money. Do not treat the historical ranking as a current 2026 market recommendation.
