Amazon introduced Proteus in 2022 as an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) designed mainly to lift and move Go Carts through fulfillment facilities, including areas shared with employees. It was not Amazon’s first warehouse robot overall, and “fully autonomous” does not mean it can run an entire warehouse without people.
What is Proteus?
Proteus is an autonomous mobile robot developed by Amazon Robotics for fulfillment and logistics operations. Amazon describes it as its “first fully autonomous mobile robot.” The important distinction is the word mobile: Proteus travels around a facility instead of remaining at a fixed workstation.

In this context, “autonomous” means Proteus can navigate without being continuously driven by a human operator. It does not mean the robot can independently perform every warehouse task, make all business decisions, repair itself, or operate without software, charging infrastructure, facility controls and human intervention.

What does Proteus actually do?
Proteus is primarily a material-movement robot. Its documented job is to lift and transport Go Carts, mobile carts used to move packages and other materials through Amazon facilities. The robot’s work is coordinated with Amazon’s SortTech software.
That means Proteus should not be confused with a product-picking robot. It does not represent a single machine that picks items, sorts every package, packs orders and loads delivery vehicles. Its role is closer to autonomous cart transportation within a larger human-and-robot fulfillment system.
The distinction matters:
- Proteus: lifts and transports Go Carts.
- Cardinal: handles package picking and placement.
- Sparrow: handles individual products.
- Robin: is a robotic arm used for package handling.
- Atlas and Hercules: are earlier mobile systems used for warehouse transport.
The Amazon Robotics fact sheet provides the public description of Proteus’s Go Cart transportation role.

Why Proteus was different from earlier Amazon robots
Proteus was not Amazon’s first warehouse robot. Amazon had already used several types of robots, including systems derived from its earlier warehouse automation efforts. Amazon says Atlas, deployed in 2014, could move totes weighing up to 750 pounds.
The defining difference was how Proteus was intended to navigate. Earlier mobile systems commonly worked in more structured or restricted environments. Proteus was designed to move through areas shared with human workers rather than being confined to robot-only zones.

Amazon says Proteus uses internally developed safety, perception and navigation technology to detect objects and choose paths. A newer Amazon description says the robot uses a forward-facing 3D camera to distinguish among people, pods, robots and other objects.
| System | Main role | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Proteus | Moves Go Carts | Autonomous mobile navigation in shared work areas |
| Atlas | Moves totes | Earlier Amazon mobile transport system |
| Hercules | Moves inventory pods or totes | Warehouse transport in more structured environments |
| Cardinal | Places packages | Robotic package handling |
| Sparrow | Handles individual products | Robotic manipulation |
| Robin | Handles packages | Robotic arm and work-cell function |
These systems are not necessarily deployed in every Amazon facility. They illustrate that Amazon’s robotics network includes different machines for different jobs, rather than one universal warehouse robot. See Amazon’s overview of how robots are deployed in its operations facilities.

How does Proteus navigate around people?
Proteus is designed to operate in human-robot shared spaces. It uses sensors and perception systems to identify nearby objects, understand its surroundings and navigate around obstacles. Amazon and AWS have described technologies associated with its autonomy including computer vision, machine learning, LiDAR, 3D point-cloud processing and navigation software.
Amazon job descriptions also reference perception and SLAM systems supporting autonomous mobility. SLAM—simultaneous localization and mapping—helps a robot estimate its position while building or using a map of its environment.
However, “works around people” should not be read as a guarantee of unrestricted movement or zero risk. Safe operation also depends on facility design, traffic management, software controls, emergency procedures, maintenance and human supervision. Amazon has not publicly specified every Proteus speed limit, exclusion zone, redundancy measure or incident metric.

Publicly described failure categories for an autonomous transport system would include blocked aisles, unexpected objects, congested traffic, altered floor layouts, software or network outages, low batteries, cart-coupling problems and situations requiring an emergency stop or manual recovery. Autonomy reduces continuous driving; it does not eliminate exception handling.
Relevant technical descriptions are available from AWS and Amazon Robotics.
What does “fully autonomous” really mean?
For Proteus, the phrase is best understood narrowly: the robot can move through a facility and navigate without being continuously driven. It does not mean that Proteus:
- picks arbitrary products from storage;
- operates an entire fulfillment center independently;
- works without maps, fleet software or charging infrastructure;
- makes unlimited natural-language decisions;
- replaces every other warehouse automation system; or
- requires no human intervention when something goes wrong.
This is why “Amazon’s first fully autonomous warehouse robot” is incomplete wording. The accurate version is Amazon’s first fully autonomous mobile warehouse robot.
What changed in the next-generation Proteus?
Amazon announced a next-generation Proteus on June 4, 2026. Amazon says the upgraded system is being piloted in its labs and is intended to support broader material-movement work across fulfillment sites.

Publicly disclosed changes include the ability to respond to natural-language task commands and determine a task’s priority, route and timing. Amazon has planned European deployment for the first half of 2027.
That announcement does not establish unlimited conversational capability, nor does it provide a complete technical comparison with the original Proteus. Amazon has not publicly specified, in the cited material, changes to payload, speed, battery life, dimensions, charging time, navigation accuracy or fleet size.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Proteus replace warehouse workers?
Proteus automates a specific class of movement tasks; it does not independently run a worker-free warehouse. Amazon presents its robotics strategy as collaborative, with robots taking on repetitive, heavy or physically strenuous work while employees handle other activities.
The real effects on staffing, job design, productivity and safety are more complicated than a simple “robots replace workers” conclusion. A facility still needs people to manage inventory, operate and maintain equipment, handle exceptions, supervise processes and perform tasks robots cannot perform.

Amazon has reported lower recordable and lost-time incident rates at Amazon Robotics sites than at non-robotics sites for 2022. That is company-reported comparative data and should not be treated as proof that Proteus alone caused the difference.
Amazon’s discussion of its broader robotics program is available here.
Can a business buy Proteus?
There is no public Amazon purchase page, price list or ordinary customer signup path for Proteus in the cited material. Amazon presents it as an internally developed system used in its own fulfillment and transportation network, not as an off-the-shelf warehouse robot.
Businesses evaluating warehouse automation would need to compare the type of problem they are solving: autonomous cart transport, goods-to-person storage, robotic picking, package handling or full facility orchestration. They would also need to assess integration, facility changes, charging, maintenance, traffic management and total cost of ownership.
What Amazon has not publicly specified
The cited public sources do not provide a complete Proteus specification sheet. In particular, they do not establish the original model’s exact payload rating, maximum speed, battery capacity, runtime, charging time, deployment count by facility, navigation accuracy, total cost of ownership or failure-recovery procedures.
Those figures should not be guessed from videos, general warehouse-robot specifications or numbers for other Amazon systems.
Bottom line
Proteus is Amazon’s first robot described by the company as a fully autonomous mobile robot. Its main job is to lift and move Go Carts through fulfillment facilities, including spaces shared with people. It is not Amazon’s first warehouse robot, it is not primarily a product picker, and it does not make an entire fulfillment center autonomous. The 2026 next-generation version expands the ambition of the system, but its broader rollout remains subject to the announced pilot and European deployment timeline.
