The OnePlus Nord N30 5G was a useful alternative if fast wired charging and expandable storage mattered more. Both have meaningful compromises, especially short software-support commitments. These are historical recommendations based on 2024 reviews, not confirmation that either phone is a good deal at its price today.
Best-supported pick: Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
WIRED named the Moto G Power 5G (2024) its “Best Under $300” in a July 2024 guide and rated it 8/10 in its review, praising its design and value. WIRED’s reviewer wrote, “This year’s Moto G Power 5G changes that—it is hands down the best Moto G the company has ever made, and is honestly the best phone you can buy for under $300 right now.” That was the reviewer’s assessment in 2024, not a current 2026 verdict. See the WIRED buying guide and WIRED review.
The US model was announced March 12, 2024, went on sale from late March, and had a $299 retail price for the 8GB RAM/128GB storage configuration, according to Android Central. Its 6.7-inch 120-Hz LCD, NFC, headphone jack and 15W wireless charging make it unusually feature-rich for that launch price. It also supports 30W wired charging, but Android Central reports that the 30W adapter was not included, so account for a compatible adapter if you need one.
Where it compromises
- Cameras: WIRED describes them as adequate rather than exceptional. If camera quality or an ultrawide camera is a priority, do not assume the Moto’s budget-friendly feature list makes it a camera standout.
- Gaming: Android Central warns of weak gaming performance. This is not the choice to make for demanding games.
- Software support: WIRED reports one Android OS upgrade and three years of security updates. That is a short runway if you plan to keep a phone for many years.
- Preinstalled apps: WIRED notes preinstalled bloatware, which can make the initial setup less tidy.
Alternative for charging speed and storage: OnePlus Nord N30 5G
The OnePlus Nord N30 5G is the more compelling alternative for someone who values fast wired charging and the option to expand storage. Android Authority lists a $299 MSRP and describes a 6.72-inch FHD+ LCD with a 120-Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 695, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage with microSD expansion, a 5,000mAh battery and 50W wired charging. Its reviewer praised battery life and charging speed, while criticizing the peripheral cameras and limited update policy. See Android Authority’s review.

Which one fits your priorities?
- Choose the Moto if wireless charging, NFC or a headphone jack are useful enough to outweigh its camera and gaming limitations, and you accept its reported update commitment.
- Consider the Nord if you would rather have 50W wired charging and microSD expansion. Its cited coverage also highlights battery life, but its cameras and update policy remain compromises.
- Look beyond both if a long support period, strong cameras, demanding gaming performance or a particular carrier’s compatibility is essential. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner across these needs.
What to verify before buying one now
The $299 figures describe launch or review-era US pricing in 2024, not a current deal. Prices and listings can change, and an offer may refer to a different capacity, condition or model. Before paying, check:
- the exact model year and storage configuration;
- whether the phone is new or renewed, unlocked or carrier-locked, and compatible with your carrier;
- the live price, stock and any carrier eligibility or unlock conditions;
- for the Moto, whether the box includes a compatible 30W USB-C adapter or whether you need to buy one separately;
- the software-support terms for the precise regional model.
These checks matter because a low sticker price does not establish the total cost or whether a particular listing matches the phone reviewed in 2024.
