Choose NEFT when batch settlement is acceptable, or RTGS for a transfer of ₹2 lakh or more that you want settled individually in real time. These are payment systems, not standalone apps: you usually access them through your bank’s mobile or internet banking.
Which alternative should you use?
| Method | Best for | Settlement and availability | Amount rules | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IMPS | Urgent, routine bank-to-bank transfers | Instant; available 24×7, including holidays, according to NPCI | NPCI states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR; a bank or channel may set a lower limit | Whether your bank supports it, plus its limit and charges |
| NEFT | Account-to-account transfers when batch settlement is acceptable | 48 half-hourly batches, 24x7x365, according to RBI | No system-level floor or ceiling; banks may set their own limits | Bank charges, transfer limits, and the beneficiary’s account number and IFSC |
| RTGS | High-value transfers requiring individual real-time settlement | Individual settlement in real time; available 24x7x365, according to RBI | Minimum ₹2 lakh; no upper system ceiling | That the transfer meets the minimum, and your bank’s outward charge |
System rules do not guarantee that every bank offers identical limits, charges, or app features. Check the terms shown by your own bank before sending.
How the three transfer options differ
IMPS: closest to UPI for speed
NPCI describes IMPS as an instant, 24×7 service available through banks and RBI-authorized prepaid payment instrument issuers. It is generally the first option to check for an urgent transfer below the RTGS minimum. NPCI’s ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit applies to channels other than SMS and IVR; it is not a promise that your bank will permit that amount. See NPCI’s IMPS overview for the system details, then confirm availability and charges with your bank.
NEFT: bank transfer with batch processing
NEFT can suit a general bank-account transfer when immediate individual settlement is not necessary. RBI says it runs 24x7x365 in 48 half-hourly batches. In its words, “NEFT is an electronic fund transfer system in which the transactions received up to a particular time are processed in batches.” RBI reports no system-level transaction floor or ceiling, but banks can apply their own risk-based limits. See the RBI NEFT FAQ.

- Add funds to your Amazon gift card balance, then use your balance to manage how much you spend while shopping.
- Set up Auto-Reload to automatically reload your gift card balance on a particular date, week, month or when your balance gets low (below a certain amount).
- Save up for a purchase by adding funds to your gift card balance.
- Checkout faster when you reload to your gift card balance in advance.
- Reloaded funds never expire and have no fees.
RTGS: real-time settlement for ₹2 lakh and above
RTGS settles each transfer individually in real time and is available 24x7x365. The RBI-set minimum is ₹2 lakh, with no upper system ceiling, so it is not an option for smaller payments. The sender generally initiates it through a bank channel using beneficiary bank details. See the RBI RTGS FAQ.
Choose by urgency and amount
- For an instant transfer below ₹2 lakh: check IMPS in your bank’s mobile or internet banking. Confirm the bank’s applicable transaction limit and charge before proceeding.
- If batch settlement is acceptable: compare NEFT in your bank’s channel. It is available around the clock, but processes transfers in scheduled half-hourly batches rather than as individual real-time settlements.
- For a transfer of at least ₹2 lakh requiring real-time individual settlement: consider RTGS and check your bank’s outward charge.
- For NEFT or RTGS, verify the beneficiary: use the name-lookup facility if your bank offers it, and check the account number and IFSC before confirming.

NEFT charges
RBI’s NEFT FAQ, updated 2 September 2024, says online NEFT transfers initiated by savings-account customers are not charged. For other outward NEFT transfers, it lists maximum charges, plus applicable GST, as follows:

|---|---|
| Up to ₹10,000 | ₹2.50 |
| Above ₹10,000 and up to ₹1 lakh | ₹5 |
| Above ₹1 lakh and up to ₹2 lakh | ₹15 |
| Above ₹2 lakh | ₹25 |
These are the FAQ’s stated caps, not a guarantee of a particular customer’s charge. Check your bank’s current fee schedule.
RTGS charges
RBI’s RTGS FAQ, updated 31 October 2022, says inward RTGS is free. For outward transfers, the FAQ caps bank charges at ₹25 for amounts from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh and ₹50 for amounts above ₹5 lakh, excluding tax. Verify the bank’s current schedule before sending.

IMPS charges
NPCI’s overview gives the system transaction limit but does not establish one fee schedule for every bank, account type, and channel. Check the charge displayed by your bank rather than assuming IMPS is free or has a universal fee.
Use the beneficiary-name lookup where available
For NEFT and RTGS, RBI directed participating banks to make a beneficiary account-name lookup facility available by 1 April 2025 through internet and mobile banking and at branches, without charge. The lookup uses the entered account number and IFSC. If a name cannot be displayed, RBI’s directive says the customer may decide whether to proceed. The availability or exact interface can vary by bank, so check the transfer screen and independently verify the details before authorizing payment. Read the RBI notification on beneficiary account-name lookup.

What these options do—and do not—replace
IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS are bank-transfer rails, not a single replacement app. They are useful when you want to send money using bank-account details through a participating institution. They are not interchangeable: IMPS is the closest match for instant routine transfers, NEFT processes in batches, and RTGS has a ₹2 lakh minimum. UPI also includes features beyond account-to-account transfers; the transfer systems described here should not be assumed to reproduce every UPI feature. For context, see NPCI’s UPI FAQ.
