Which affordable manual sports car fits your needs?
“Affordable” depends on more than the sticker: passenger space, roof style, daily usability, and the exact trim all matter. The following comparison uses U.S. 2025-model-year information. Prices are published figures, not current dealer quotes or guaranteed transaction prices.

Price figures in this table are not one synchronized comparison: Mazda’s figures reflect a September 2025 adjustment, Honda’s are launch pricing from July 2024, and the GR86 and BRZ figures are starting prices reported by AP relaying Edmunds in 2025. Compare a current written dealer quote, including destination and options, before deciding what is least expensive.
Miata or GR86: which one should you choose?
Choose the Miata for the roadster experience
The Miata is the only open-top, two-seat choice here. Mazda lists 181 hp and 151 lb-ft for its 2.0-liter engine, but its defining difference is the convertible format and compact footprint. The Sport and Club trims are manual-only; the Grand Touring can be ordered with either transmission. If you want the RF’s retractable-fastback roof rather than the soft top, check its separate starting MSRP: Mazda listed $37,850 for the RF in its adjustment effective September 3, 2025.

Choose a coupe if a second row matters
The GR86 and BRZ are mechanically related, fixed-roof rear-drive 2+2 coupes. Their back seats and cargo space make them more flexible than the Miata according to AP’s 2025 overview relaying Edmunds, but the publication also characterizes their ride as firm. Treat the rear seats as added flexibility rather than assuming they offer sedan-like room.
Subaru’s official 2025 specifications establish the BRZ’s 228-hp, 184-lb-ft 2.4-liter boxer engine and standard six-speed manual. AP’s Edmunds-based overview reports starting prices of $31,135 for the GR86 and $32,380 for the BRZ, and manual versions reaching 60 mph in around six seconds. Those are reported overview figures, not a substitute for a comparable instrumented test or a current quote. Toyota’s available official result confirms a six-speed manual for the 2025 GR86, but detailed specifications were not independently verified here.

When is the Civic Si the better value?
Consider the Civic Si if you need four doors and want a manual transmission without giving up a conventional sedan layout. It is front-wheel drive, so it is not a direct body-style or drivetrain substitute for the rear-drive coupes. Honda specifies a 200-hp, 192-lb-ft 1.5-liter turbo engine, a six-speed manual with rev-match, and a helical limited-slip differential for the 2025 Si. Honda’s EPA estimates are 27 mpg city, 37 highway, and 31 combined.
Honda’s July 2024 launch release listed $29,950 before a $1,095 destination charge, totaling $31,045 with that stated charge. That is historical launch pricing, not a current advertised or negotiated price. Honda also said the turbocharged 2025 Civic Si was “the only car in its class available exclusively with a manual transmission”; that is the manufacturer’s class-specific claim, not a claim that it was the only manual car on the market.

Which 2025 cars still come with a manual?
- Mazda MX-5 Miata: Manual-only Sport and Club trims; Grand Touring offers a manual or automatic.
- Subaru BRZ: Six-speed manual standard, with a six-speed automatic optional.
- Toyota GR86: Six-speed manual is confirmed for the 2025 model.
- Honda Civic Si: Six-speed manual; Honda describes the 2025 Si as exclusively manual in its class.
A familiar alternative does not qualify for this model year: AP’s 2025 overview relaying Edmunds says every 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI has a seven-speed automatic. The same overview mentions the Mustang as another performance alternative, but does not establish manual availability for every configuration; verify the transmission on the specific trim before considering it.

- Pick the format first. Decide between a two-seat convertible, a rear-drive 2+2 coupe, and a front-drive four-door sedan before ranking horsepower or starting prices.
- Verify the exact trim and transmission. Confirm the manual is available on the vehicle in the advertised configuration. For the Miata, distinguish the manual-only Sport and Club from the dual-transmission Grand Touring; for the BRZ, note that the manual is standard.
- Request an itemized, current out-the-door quote. Ask the dealer to identify MSRP, destination, options, dealer-installed items, taxes, registration, and any discount or incentive. Compare quotes for the same roof, trim, and equipment.
- Check the recurring costs separately. Get insurance quotes for the exact model and trim, estimate fuel and maintenance for your driving, and compare financing offers using the same down payment and term. The published figures above do not establish these costs.
- Drive the car in the conditions that matter to you. Assess seating comfort, visibility, ride firmness, passenger access, and whether the roof and storage work for your routine. A reported 0–60 time cannot answer those questions.
