Ben and Felicia Horowitz donated Tesla Cybertrucks to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). The department says the donors covered the purchase and outfitting costs, with no taxpayer dollars used for either. The exact fleet count depends on what is included: LVMPD and the Associated Press describe 10 patrol trucks, while The Guardian later reported that the gift also included a separate vehicle for SWAT.
Who donated the Cybertrucks, and when did LVMPD receive them?
Ben and Felicia Horowitz were identified as the donors by LVMPD. Sheriff Kevin McMahill first announced the gift at his State of the Department address on February 25, 2025, initially describing the donor as anonymous. The Las Vegas Review-Journal identified the Horowitzes the next day, and LVMPD confirmed their involvement, according to TechCrunch’s March 2025 account.

The announcement and the deployment were separate milestones. LVMPD unveiled the patrol vehicles on October 28, 2025, and said each area command would receive a Cybertruck. The Associated Press reported in November that the trucks were intended for patrol use.
How many Cybertrucks did the department get?
The most clearly established patrol-fleet count is 10. LVMPD’s October 2025 announcement and the Associated Press’s November report both describe 10 patrol vehicles. Earlier reporting reflected a discrepancy: TechCrunch noted that the department’s information gave a count of 10 while a spokesperson said 11.

A later account may explain the difference. The Guardian reported in December 2025, citing emails it obtained, that the donation consisted of 10 patrol trucks plus one vehicle for SWAT, described as a “sting protector.” That account makes the figures compatible if the 10 count refers only to patrol vehicles, but the distinction should be attributed to The Guardian rather than treated as LVMPD’s published total.
Did taxpayers pay for the vehicles?
LVMPD says the Horowitzes covered the costs and that no tax dollars were used to purchase or outfit the vehicles. The department’s announcement does not state a dollar value. The Guardian separately reported that the donation was valued at about $2.7 million, based on emails it obtained; that is a reported estimate, not an official valuation published by LVMPD.

The route by which the gift was made was not fully explained in the department announcement. TechCrunch reported in March that LVMPD did not answer its question about how the donation was made. In December, The Guardian reported, based on obtained emails, that it went through Behind the Blue. These are distinct accounts: the later reporting identifies a route, but the cited announcement does not provide a detailed transaction record.
How were the trucks prepared for police use?
LVMPD credited Unplugged Performance and Upfit with outfitting the Cybertrucks for patrol functions, and Ink and Architectural Expo with wrapping them. The Associated Press reported that about 400 officers had been trained to operate the trucks and that the department planned to use public charging stations.

McMahill presented safety and recruitment as reasons for the gift at the February announcement: “We want these things because the cops inside will be safe no matter what. These stop bullets. They are also a tremendous recruitment tool for us,” as quoted by TechCrunch. At the October unveiling, he described the vehicles as representing “innovation” and “sustainability,” along with a commitment to serve the community with tools available “safely, efficiently and responsibly,” according to the Associated Press.
Those statements explain the department’s stated rationale; the cited reporting does not establish that the trucks improved safety, recruitment, response times, or crime outcomes.

What questions does a privately funded police fleet raise?
A donated vehicle can spare a department an immediate purchase expense, but the gift also puts costly equipment into public-service use and makes transparency relevant: residents may want to know what was donated, how it was transferred, and whether private donors have any role in public decisions. TechCrunch described advocates’ concerns about transparency around earlier Horowitz gifts and technology purchases. The Associated Press also reported oversight concerns about this donation.
Those are concerns raised in reporting, not findings that the donation involved improper influence. The public information cited here establishes LVMPD’s no-tax-dollar statement and the vehicles’ intended deployment; it does not document measured operational outcomes or establish that the donation changed department policy.
