Compare live quotes for the same sending country, destination, amount, funding method, and delivery option. Choose based on what the recipient will actually receive, when they can access it, and whether the option works for them—not on the transfer method’s label or its advertised fee alone.
How to compare remittance options fairly
Start with the recipient amount shown for the exact transaction. A provider’s cost can include an explicit fee and an exchange-rate spread, so a transfer with a low or zero fee may still deliver less than an alternative. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains the importance of comparing fees, exchange rates, and the amount expected to arrive in its consumer guide to remittance transfers.
Use the same send amount, currency route, funding source, and payout method when comparing quotes. Then check the quoted arrival time, recipient access, and any conditions attached to collection. Provider fees and exchange rates vary by transaction; a quote or promotion for one route does not establish the best price for another. Provider pages such as Western Union’s transfer-fee calculator and Wise’s comparison page illustrate why the actual quote matters.
- Recipient amount: What is expected to arrive after fees and conversion?
- Speed: What arrival time is quoted for this payout method?
- Access: Can the recipient use the account, cash-pickup location, card, or wallet offered?
- Sender requirements: Is the transfer available through the sender’s preferred channel and payment method?
- Confidence: Can you review the transaction details, track it, and understand cancellation terms before paying?
When bank transfer or bank deposit makes sense
“Bank transfer” can mean two different things: the sender might fund a remittance from a bank account, or the recipient might receive the money as a deposit to their bank account. Check which part of the transaction is being compared. Funding from a bank account does not necessarily mean the recipient gets a bank deposit.

A bank deposit is a practical choice when the route supports the recipient’s account and the quoted delivery time suits them. Compare its recipient amount and timing with the alternatives. A bank’s separate charge is not necessarily the only cost, and there is no basis for assuming every bank transfer is slower or more expensive.
When a money transfer app makes sense
An app can make it convenient to initiate a transfer and review a quote, but “app” does not tell you what the transfer costs or how quickly it will arrive. Check the displayed fee, exchange rate, recipient amount, funding method, payout method, and quoted timing for your transaction. Treat a promotional quote as specific to its stated conditions, not as a permanent price or a promise that the app beats other options.

When cash pickup makes sense
Cash pickup can work when the recipient needs cash or does not have access to a supported account-based option. It is a delivery method, not a guarantee of a particular price or arrival time. Availability, pickup locations, timing, and identification requirements can differ by provider and destination.
Before choosing it, confirm that the recipient can reach a participating location and meet its collection requirements. Do not assume that local requirements are the same everywhere; check the provider’s instructions for the specific destination and transfer.

What U.S. senders should check before paying
For most transfers covered by the U.S. remittance rule, providers generally must disclose the exchange rate, fees and taxes, and expected delivered amount before payment. The CFPB’s consumer guide explains these disclosures and says consumers are not required to proceed after receiving the information.
The CFPB also describes a general cancellation period of up to 30 minutes after payment if the recipient has not picked up or received the money. The rule has exceptions and a defined scope; this protection should not be assumed to apply to transfers sent outside the United States. See the CFPB’s Circular 2024-02 and consumer resource on sending money for details.
