Baffle announced a $6 million Series A on January 17, 2018. Envision Ventures led the round, with ServiceNow Ventures, Thomvest Ventures, Industry Ventures, True Ventures and Engineering Capital participating. Baffle said it would use the funding to develop its data-protection product for more databases and expand sales and marketing.

Who invested in Baffle’s $6 million Series A?

The financing was announced January 17, 2018. Envision Ventures led the $6 million round; ServiceNow Ventures, Thomvest Ventures, Industry Ventures, True Ventures and Engineering Capital also invested. Baffle’s announcement did not disclose individual investment amounts or the ownership stakes associated with the round.

How Baffle said it would use the funding

Baffle said the capital would accelerate product development across additional databases and support sales and marketing. The announcement did not break down the $6 million by planned use.

What BaffleManager was designed to do

Baffle positioned BaffleManager as a data-protection service for applications using sensitive information, including in cloud environments. Its announced capabilities combined access monitoring, access control and end-to-end encryption. The company framed the product as a response to cloud migration, data theft and breaches, intellectual-property theft, regulatory compliance, and higher expectations for data protection.

SQL-layer controls and encryption

According to the product announcement, BaffleManager integrated at the SQL layer, acting as a gatekeeper that constrained how applications accessed sensitive data. Baffle said it used AES-256 encryption to protect data in memory without breaking the application. SiliconANGLE separately characterized the offering as “encryption-as-a-service” for cloud and on-premises data in its coverage of the Series A.

Those descriptions explain Baffle’s stated approach, not a complete technical evaluation: the cited announcements do not establish how the product performed across specific workloads, what deployment required, or how it compared with other security products.

What happened after the Series A?

On August 16, 2021, Baffle announced a $20 million Series B led by Celesta Capital. The company described its later product direction as a no-code, data-centric security mesh for cloud and critical-infrastructure environments, intended to protect data without application changes. Baffle’s 2021 announcement marks a later financing and product description; it should not be confused with the product claims made when the company raised its Series A.

A contemporaneous TechCrunch report said Baffle claimed it had protected more than 100 billion records and supported AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Those were claims reported in 2021, not metrics disclosed in the 2018 Series A announcement.
