Azul filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States on May 28, 2025, and completed its restructuring on February 20, 2026. The airline said the process would reduce debt and aircraft lease obligations and optimize its fleet. Its disclosures confirm that it reworked selected aircraft leases, but do not verify the often-repeated claim that it sought to return exactly 20 planes.
Why did Azul file for Chapter 11?
Azul announced on May 28, 2025, that it had initiated a “proactive process under Chapter 11 in the United States.” It described the filing as a pre-arranged restructuring supported by creditors, aircraft lessor AerCap, United Airlines and American Airlines. The aim was to restructure debt and lease obligations and optimize the fleet, rather than to announce an immediate shutdown of the airline. Azul’s May 28, 2025 announcement contemplated approximately US$1.6 billion in debtor-in-possession financing and targeted the elimination of more than US$2.0 billion in funded debt. Those were announced financing and restructuring targets, not figures to treat as achieved results.
Did Azul want to return 20 planes?
Azul’s official disclosures establish that it restructured selected aircraft leases, but they do not state that the airline sought to return exactly 20 aircraft. A precise count would need to be checked against the relevant Chapter 11 court motion and docket record. Lease agreements being rejected does not, by itself, establish how many aircraft were physically returned: a legal lease disposition and an aircraft’s actual return are related but distinct events.
In an August 28, 2026 SEC filing, Azul retrospectively described selected lease agreements as assumed, amended or rejected. That confirms lease restructuring, not the reported 20-plane figure or a plane-by-plane return total.

Is Azul still in bankruptcy?
No. Azul announced on February 20, 2026, that its restructuring plan had become effective and that it had emerged from Chapter 11. The company reported that the completed restructuring reduced loans and financing debt by approximately US$1.1 billion and cut aircraft lease debt by nearly 40%. These are Azul’s reported results. What happened to flights, tickets and loyalty points?
When it announced the filing in May 2025, Azul said its operations and ticket sales would continue as usual and that tickets, loyalty points and customer benefits would remain available. That statement described the airline’s plans at the time of filing; it is not a guarantee about any particular flight, ticket or benefit today. Travelers should check their booking directly with Azul for current flight status, schedule changes and applicable ticket terms.

How to read the debt and lease figures
The figures announced at filing and those reported at emergence describe different stages of the restructuring:
