The reported change concerned H200-equipped P5e.48xlarge and P5en.48xlarge Capacity Blocks—not every AWS GPU instance or every way of buying EC2 compute.
What changed—and what did not
The reports describe a price adjustment to EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML, a dynamic-pricing product whose rates AWS says vary with supply and demand. DataCenterDynamics reported that the affected types included P5e.48xlarge and P5en.48xlarge, each equipped with eight NVIDIA H200 GPUs (DataCenterDynamics, January 6, 2026). AWS’s product-family documentation identifies P5e and P5en as H200 instance families (AWS EC2 Instance Types Guide).
This was not reported as a blanket increase for all AWS GPU instances. AWS told DataCenterDynamics that its commitment not to raise rates on fixed pricing models such as On-Demand and Savings Plans remained unchanged. That distinction matters when assessing a cloud bill: the report concerns a particular product and pricing mechanism, not a general change to every EC2 GPU rate.
Reported hourly examples vary
The two publications gave different examples, which should be read as separate reported rates rather than combined into one universal price. Region and product details can affect the amount.

| Publication and date | Reported example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Network World, January 7, 2026 | P5e.48xlarge: $34.61 to $39.80 per hour | Network World characterized the change as around 15%; this is its reported example, not a rate for every region. (Network World) |
| DataCenterDynamics, January 6, 2026 | US West example: $43.26 to $49.75 | Reported as a US West example; it should not be treated as the same regional or product quote as Network World’s figure. (DataCenterDynamics) |
The reports said AWS had previously indicated Capacity Block prices would be updated in January 2026, but did not establish whether that update would be an increase or decrease in advance. They do not establish an exact effective timestamp or a complete rate schedule by region.
Why AWS says the Capacity Block price changed
DataCenterDynamics quoted an AWS spokesperson as saying Capacity Blocks for ML are priced dynamically based on supply and demand, and that the adjustment reflected supply-and-demand patterns AWS expected for the quarter. The spokesperson also said the company’s commitment regarding fixed On-Demand and Savings Plans pricing had not changed. The publication also quoted Gartner VP analyst Lydia Long, who described dynamic Capacity Block pricing as consistent with how the product is presented. These are statements attributed by DataCenterDynamics, not independently verified transcripts.

How to interpret the increase if you are budgeting for GPU compute
For a business or developer estimating costs, first identify the exact purchasing mechanism and instance type in the quote or AWS console. A Capacity Block rate is not interchangeable with an On-Demand or Savings Plans rate. Compare quotes on the same basis: AWS Region, instance type, pricing model, rate per instance-hour, and what services or charges are included. The reported examples alone do not provide a complete current price list or establish the amount a particular customer will pay.
Also keep the product-specific change separate from other AWS price announcements. In June 2025, AWS announced reductions of up to 45% for EC2 NVIDIA GPU-accelerated P4 and P5 instances; that announcement concerned different pricing context and does not directly cancel or reverse the later Capacity Block adjustment (AWS News Blog, June 5, 2025). AWS separately announced GPU management-fee reductions for ECS Managed Instances effective July 1, 2026; those fees are distinct from EC2 Capacity Block rates (AWS, July 7, 2026).
