Matt Wood’s October 2024 departure from Amazon was real, but it was not permanent. The longtime AWS product and artificial-intelligence executive left after about 15 years, spent roughly 19 months leading commercial technology and innovation at PwC, and returned to AWS in May 2026 as Chief AI and Technology Officer.

What happened when Matt Wood left Amazon?

Wood announced his departure on LinkedIn on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. After approximately 15 years at Amazon and AWS, he wrote that it was time to say “farewell to Amazon,” described the experience as an extraordinary journey, and said he expected to keep helping organizations with reinvention and transformation.

At the time, his next employer had not been disclosed. His message did not identify a dispute, layoff, retirement or move to a competing cloud provider. The contemporaneous account established a senior executive departure, not the reason for it. CRN’s October 9, 2024 report identified him as AWS’s vice president of artificial intelligence.

Who is Matt Wood?

Wood’s career combines scientific training, product management and cloud-platform leadership. His background includes medical studies in the United Kingdom, a Ph.D. in machine learning, and postdoctoral work at Cornell and Weill Cornell in bioinformatics and natural-language processing. AWS’s published biography describes work spanning customers, partners and internal teams adopting data, machine learning and AI.

Public biographies use slightly different wording for some earlier titles, so “about 15 years” is more precise than claiming an exact tenure.

Which AWS services did Wood help launch or shape?

AWS credits Wood with involvement in launching or developing a broad set of services, including:

  • AWS Lambda
  • Amazon Kinesis
  • Amazon SageMaker
  • AWS DeepRacer
  • Amazon Athena
  • Amazon EMR

His later AI work also connected him with generative-AI initiatives including Amazon Bedrock. These were large team efforts. The evidence supports saying Wood helped launch, shape or advocate for these products—not that he personally invented or solely owned them.

Why was his 2024 departure significant?

Wood was one of AWS’s most recognizable public voices on machine learning and enterprise AI. His experience crossed infrastructure, analytics, data platforms, model development and generative AI at a time when cloud providers were competing intensely for AI workloads and talent.

He also represented AWS to customers and partners. Examples in his AWS biography include the NFL, Cerner, Intuit, Pinterest, GE, FINRA, Celgene and NASA. His public appearances covered topics such as Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock and practical enterprise adoption.

The timing mattered, but it should not be overstated. AWS CEO Matt Garman had taken that role in June 2024, yet Wood’s exit alone does not establish an AWS crisis, strategic retreat or internal breakdown. Garman is a different executive from Matt Wood; Amazon’s investor-relations biography confirms Garman’s separate position as AWS CEO at Amazon’s official site.

What did Wood do after Amazon?

Wood joined PwC in October 2024 and worked in commercial technology and innovation until May 2026, according to his current professional profile. That period is important because it adds enterprise-consulting and transformation experience to a career previously centered on building and operating cloud products.

Why did Matt Wood return to AWS?

In May 2026, Wood rejoined AWS as Chief AI and Technology Officer. An AWS Newsroom announcement said the role would involve working with customers and innovation teams on AWS AI and cloud services. The title is broader than his former vice president of AI-products position and combines technology leadership with direct customer engagement.

The documented facts support a clear interpretation: Wood now brings experience from both sides of the enterprise-AI problem—building cloud capabilities and helping organizations pursue commercial transformation. That may help AWS connect services innovation with production adoption, although AWS has not published a product roadmap or reorganization that can be attributed to his return.

What his return does—and does not—tell us about AWS

What is reasonable to infer

  • AWS values an executive who can explain AI platforms to customers as well as work across product and technology teams.
  • The company may want tighter links between services innovation and enterprise deployment.
  • Wood’s PwC experience gives him a perspective on implementation, governance and organizational change outside a hyperscaler.

What is not established

  • There is no confirmed roadmap showing that Wood’s return will change Bedrock, SageMaker AI, Amazon Q, custom silicon or AI infrastructure.
  • There is no evidence that he left Amazon because of conflict, layoffs or a strategic disagreement.
  • His title does not by itself prove that he is AWS’s sole or highest-ranking AI executive.
  • His association with services does not make him their individual inventor.

How this relates to AWS AI products

Wood’s remit touches services that enterprises may evaluate, but the executive story should not be mistaken for a product recommendation:

Service What it is Typical fit
Amazon Bedrock Managed access to foundation models and generative-AI application tools. Organizations that want model access without operating model infrastructure directly.
Amazon SageMaker AI Platform for building, training, deploying and managing machine-learning models. Teams needing an integrated machine-learning development and operations environment.
Amazon Q Business Enterprise AI assistance connected to organizational information and systems. Internal knowledge search and workflow support where identity and permissions are configured.

AWS generally bills AI services according to usage or resources rather than one universal subscription. Costs vary by region, model, storage, inference volume and compute configuration; readers should check the relevant current pricing pages before committing to a workload.

The bottom line on Matt Wood’s AWS departure

Matt Wood did leave Amazon in October 2024 after about 15 years as a senior AWS product and AI leader. He then spent time at PwC before returning in May 2026 as Chief AI and Technology Officer. The accurate current story is therefore not a permanent AWS exit, but a cycle of departure, outside enterprise experience and return to a broader AI-and-technology role.
