GRID® 1 is not a special Apple-made iPhone. It is a Grid Studio wall display built by dismantling an authentic first-generation iPhone (the iPhone 2G) and arranging its parts in a framed, exploded-view presentation. The product was announced in June 2021, and Grid’s current listing found for 2026 shows it at $299, reduced from a displayed comparison price of $699. Check the live checkout page before buying because stock and pricing can change.
What GRID® 1 actually is
Grid Studio sells GRID® 1 as a technology-art installation rather than a usable handset. An old first-generation iPhone is taken apart, its exterior and internal components are arranged and labeled, and the result is mounted for wall display. The current listing calls it “GRID® 1 (iPhone 2G)” and gives dimensions of 13 × 13 × 1.8 inches. See the official product listing.
The original iPhone launched on June 29, 2007, according to historical technical documentation reproduced in a USPTO filing. GRID® 1 turns that landmark hardware into a display piece; it is not a new Apple model, prototype, factory-sealed collectible, or Apple-authorized limited edition.
Why collectors find it special
- The first-generation iPhone is a major piece of consumer-technology history.
- An exploded view makes the engineering visible instead of hiding it inside a working phone.
- Grid says it uses old original phones and genuine components, although the frame is a reconstructed artwork made from a donor device.
- Genuine donor phones are becoming harder for Grid to source, while the finished frame provides presentation that a loose vintage handset does not.
Grid’s description does not establish that every component comes from one untouched handset, that every part works, or that the frame has been independently authenticated. Cosmetic wear is possible because the source phones are old.

What happened in the 2021 launch?
The original “about to go on sale” story dates to June 2021, around the iPhone’s 14th anniversary. iMore reported that the first release would contain 100 frames, with a sale time of Tuesday at 7 a.m. Pacific Time. Grid’s announced plan was a limited run of 999 sets, described as available while stocks lasted.
Pricing differed slightly by report. iMore described a $400 promotional price against a stated $599 regular price, while other coverage reported $399. Apple project employees were reportedly eligible for a possible $100 discount after verification. Those were launch-period terms, not a current sale schedule.

The current page advertises worldwide shipping, gift wrapping and secure payments, and warns that minor wear and tear may remain. Destination-specific shipping, taxes, duties, delivery estimates and return rules should be checked at checkout.
It is artwork, not a functioning phone
Once the donor phone has been disassembled and mounted, GRID® 1 is not intended for calls, apps, charging or ordinary use. Treat it as décor and memorabilia. The listing’s condition warning matters: Grid says it screens old phones before mounting, but buyers who require pristine condition should be cautious.

Should you buy one?

A normal vintage iPhone preserves the object as a handset and may be restorable, but batteries, displays and other parts can be degraded and provenance can be difficult to establish. GRID® 1 sacrifices usability for a finished presentation. Its limited production may support desirability, but neither the 999-set announcement nor a sale price proves future resale value.
Buying checklist
- Open the official Grid product page and confirm the live price and whether “Add to cart” still works.
- Read the condition language and accept that minor donor-device wear may be visible.
- Calculate shipping, taxes and import duties for your destination.
- Review return terms and delivery estimates before paying.
- Ask Grid whether the current unit is numbered or includes authentication documentation; the current listing does not establish remaining inventory or numbering.
- Do not assume Apple endorsement, a functioning phone or investment-grade provenance.
Other options
Grid’s Apple collection includes framed displays of other Apple devices and accessories. A later iPhone or first-generation Apple Watch frame may better match your budget or interests. If you need a usable device, compare prices and condition for a loose original iPhone instead; if you need a modern phone, a current iPhone is the relevant purchase, not this display.
