Avelo Canceled 7 Summer 2025 Routes After Announcing ICE Charter Contract: What’s Known

Avelo’s seven reported 2025 route removals came shortly after its DHS/ICE charter announcement, but the available evidence does not prove the contract caused the cuts.

Avelo’s seven reported summer 2025 route removals came days after the airline announced a charter agreement for DHS/ICE deportation flights. The timing is documented; the available reporting does not establish that the contract caused each cancellation.

Which Avelo routes were removed from the summer 2025 schedule?

AeroRoutes reported on April 16, 2025, that Avelo had removed seven routes from its Northern Summer 2025 schedule. Some flights had already ended in April; others were planned for summer but were canceled before starting.

Route removed What the schedule report establishes
Concord, North Carolina–Albany, New York Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.
Concord–Detroit Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.
Concord–Lakeland, Florida Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.
Concord–Nashville Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.
Concord–Washington Dulles Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.
Santa Rosa, California–Boise, Idaho Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.
Santa Rosa–Salt Lake City Removed from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule; the report does not specify the operating end date in the cited summary.

AeroRoutes’ April 16 schedule report is the source for the route list. The seven routes should not be confused with a separate Avelo announcement: on April 3, the airline said it had inaugurated seven new routes from Wilmington, Delaware. The shared count refers to different routes and events. Avelo’s Wilmington announcement identifies those additions.

What happened, and when?

  1. April 3, 2025: Avelo announced seven new Wilmington routes, an unrelated expansion announcement.
  2. April 7, 2025: Avelo announced an agreement to operate charter deportation flights for DHS/ICE from Arizona, with operations planned to begin in May. The airline said it would use three Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The Associated Press reported the announcement.
  3. April 15, 2025: Connecticut Attorney General William Tong’s office described the state’s inquiry and Avelo’s reported response. The office said Avelo told the state that DHS and the FAA unilaterally determined flight procedures. That account reflects the state’s inquiry and the airline’s reported response; it does not disclose the contract’s full terms. The Attorney General’s statement provides the state’s account.
  4. April 16, 2025: AeroRoutes reported the seven removals from the Northern Summer 2025 schedule.
  5. September 2025: Avelo’s flight-attendant union, AFA-CWA, publicly objected to the charter decision and raised concerns about reputational and business consequences. Those were the union’s concerns, not evidence establishing why the routes changed. AFA-CWA’s Avelo page contains the union’s position.
  6. January 7, 2026: Avelo said it would stop contract flights associated with federal immigration enforcement and close its Mesa Gateway base. CBS News and NBC Connecticut reported the decision.

Did the ICE contract cause the seven cancellations?

The documented chronology supports saying the route removals were reported after Avelo announced the charter agreement. It does not, by itself, establish that the contract caused the cuts. The reviewed route report lists the schedule changes, while the contract announcement describes the charter operation; neither provides a route-by-route explanation connecting the two.

Avelo’s stated reason for taking the charter work was that it would support the airline’s expansion and help protect jobs, a rationale attributed to CEO Andrew Levy in the AP report. Levy also said, “We realize this is a sensitive and complicated topic.” That explains the airline’s public case for the agreement, not the reason for any particular route removal.

The union’s objections and the Connecticut inquiry add context to the dispute, but they do not settle the cause of the schedule changes. The reviewed public material does not establish that Avelo said it cut these routes to free aircraft for the contract, or disclose contract terms sufficient to prove that link.

What does the later end of the contract flying mean for travelers?

Avelo’s January 2026 decision to stop the immigration-enforcement contract flights and close its Mesa Gateway base is a later development, separate from the 2025 schedule removals. It does not reverse or explain those earlier route changes. For someone affected by a specific canceled flight, the relevant question is the booking’s status and any rebooking or refund options Avelo provided at the time; the route report alone does not establish individual passenger remedies.
