Avelo announced in July 2025 that it would close its Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) base and end its West Coast operations. Its next move is a smaller network centered on a planned Dallas/McKinney base, alongside changes to its fleet and other bases. Those are announced plans, not guarantees of future growth or improved finances.
What Avelo’s California exit means
The July 2025 announcement covered more than one route: Avelo said it would close its Burbank base and discontinue West Coast operations. The California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport separately reported that Avelo would end its ACV–BUR service earlier than the December end date originally announced. That route change had its own timing; it should not be treated as the date all California service ended. Source
For travelers, the practical takeaway is that Avelo’s Burbank base closure was part of a broader withdrawal from West Coast flying, rather than simply the cancellation of the ACV–BUR route.
Where Avelo plans to focus next
In a January 6, 2026 announcement, Avelo said it was streamlining around four bases: New Haven (HVN), Philadelphia/Delaware Valley (ILG), Charlotte/Concord (USA), and Central Florida/Lakeland (LAL). It also planned to open a base at Dallas/McKinney, Texas, in late 2026. Avelo’s announcement

Avelo announced that it would close its bases in Mesa (AZA), Raleigh-Durham (RDU), and Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM). Closing a base does not necessarily mean ending every flight to that airport: Avelo said it would keep selected service to RDU and ILM from other cities.

What the fleet changes do—and do not—show
Avelo said it would remove six Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 aircraft, leaving a fleet operating primarily 737-800s. It also said an order for up to 100 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft would support future growth. “Up to 100” is the order ceiling, not a count of aircraft delivered or currently in service. Why Avelo says it is changing course
Avelo described its January changes as a balance-sheet transformation and a simplification of its network to prepare for growth. The company said: “These changes enable Avelo to focus on sustainably scaling five core bases in 2026 and to prepare the company for growth in the coming years, facilitated by the company’s recent order for up to 100 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft.” This was language in Avelo’s January 6 announcement, not a named executive’s quote. Avelo AFA, the airline’s union, reported on January 7 that management said the DHS charter program did not provide enough consistent and predictable revenue to outweigh its operational complexity and costs, and that ending the program was connected with the Mesa base closure. The union said the operational changes would take effect January 27, 2026. Those comments are the union’s account of management’s position. Avelo AFA’s account
Avelo characterized its recapitalization positively, saying its cash position was among the strongest in the U.S. airline industry relative to its size. The announcement supplied no figure or independent comparison. The public statements explain the company’s stated rationale, but do not establish that the plan will restore profitability or guarantee growth.
