Avago Technologies named Hock Tan president and chief executive on April 4, 2006. He joined the company’s board, while outgoing president and CEO Dick Chang became its chairman. The appointment came as Avago completed its transition into an independent semiconductor company spun off from Agilent Technologies.

Who became Avago’s president and CEO?

Hock Tan was appointed president and CEO, and was also set to join Avago’s board of directors, according to EE Times’ April 4, 2006 report.

Who did Tan replace?

Tan succeeded Dick Chang as president and CEO. Chang moved into the role of chairman of Avago’s board. The announcement therefore described a leadership succession, not Chang’s departure from the company.

Why did Avago appoint Tan?

Chang cited Tan’s ability to drive growth through “strong tactical and strategic execution” and to lead Avago after its transition to a fully standalone company. The report did not provide specific targets or forecast the appointment’s financial results.

How Avago became a standalone company

Avago was formed from Agilent Technologies’ Semiconductor Products Group. Agilent sold the group to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) and Silver Lake Partners for $2.66 billion, after which the business operated as standalone Avago. The appointment announcement framed Tan’s leadership as beginning after that transition.
