Farmers Business Network (FBN) launched Norm, an AI-powered agricultural advisor, in April 2023. It is still listed on FBN’s site as a tool for member questions about topics such as crop protection, planting and animal agriculture. Norm can help organize research and prepare questions, but it is not a dependable final authority for pesticide use, animal-health treatment or financial decisions: FBN warns that its answers may be inaccurate and says users must verify consequential information.
What FBN released in 2023
FBN announced Norm on April 15, 2023, describing it as an AI agricultural advisor. FBN’s launch announcement introduced the product; Successful Farming reported the release on April 18, 2023. The initial version was a member-facing beta, with FBN inviting members to test it. It was not a standalone downloadable software release or an unrestricted public chatbot.
FBN framed Norm as a quick, conversational way to explore the many questions that arise in farming—from soil and pests to equipment and animal health. The intended role was to improve access to information and support decision-making, not eliminate the need for human review. Early reporting said FBN tested it with internal agronomy and animal-health personnel and about 50 to 60 engaged members; that describes an early feedback process, not an independent performance trial. What Norm is designed to help with
FBN’s examples and launch descriptions span crop and livestock topics as well as farm operations. The list reflects intended areas of use, not proof that every question is answered accurately or that all capabilities are unchanged since launch.
#1 Best Overall
- Crop protection: questions about products, pests and diseases, application rates, tank mixes, nozzle selection, and label language.
- Seed and inputs: seed selection and comparisons, including questions involving geography, soil and climate, as well as herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.
- Agronomy and field operations: planting timing, fertility, irrigation, soil, crop rotation, tillage and equipment.
- Livestock: animal-health topics, including livestock disease and beef-cattle questions.
- Farm business: FBN has described later expansion into crop-marketing questions. That does not make Norm a financial adviser.
FBN’s current Norm page shows example prompts involving herbicide plantback intervals, tank-mix instructions, chemical application, crop production and animal agriculture. Its platform-expansion announcement describes the move into crop-marketing questions.
How Norm differs from a general-purpose chatbot
At launch, Norm used OpenAI’s ChatGPT/GPT-3.5 language-model technology. FBN said it adapted or supplemented the system with agriculture-related material rather than simply offering an unmodified general chatbot. Reported sources included FBN agronomy content and analytics, product labels, Seed Finder information, USDA material, university and extension research, and weather and soil data. FBN’s Norm FAQ and data page describe this agricultural context.
That distinction may make Norm more relevant to farm questions, but it does not establish that its answers are more accurate than those of another AI tool. FBN’s public materials do not clearly establish Norm’s current model version, technical architecture, data-refresh schedule or precisely how information is retrieved for an individual answer. The GPT-3.5 description applies to the launch-era product; it should not be assumed to describe the current system.
| Question | General-purpose chatbot | Norm, as FBN describes it |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Broad topics across many fields | Agriculture, livestock and farm-management questions |
| Farm context | Usually depends on details a user supplies | Designed around agricultural information and FBN tools; still depends on the context provided in a question |
| Product information | May not have current or local label context | FBN says it incorporates agricultural sources including product-label information |
| Reliability | Can produce confident errors | Can also produce inaccurate or incomplete answers; FBN says users must verify them |
Norm’s positioning within FBN’s broader agricultural services is relevant to users evaluating product questions. FBN also sells agricultural inputs through FBN Direct. That platform relationship is a reason to verify product comparisons independently, not evidence that a particular answer is biased.

How to access Norm and ask a useful question
FBN’s current public instructions indicate that Norm is accessed through an FBN account, from the dashboard or at FBN.com/norm. Interface labels can change. FBN’s April 2026 planting-agronomics page lists Norm among tools available with FBN membership; it describes those tools as free with membership, not every FBN service or product. No separate Norm subscription price is established in the cited materials.
- Sign in to an FBN account.
- Open Norm from the dashboard or visit FBN.com/norm.
- Enter a question and submit it. Add relevant details and use follow-up questions to clarify what you need.
- Before acting on an important answer, check the underlying label, applicable local rules and appropriate professional advice.
A useful prompt supplies facts that affect the answer: crop and variety, state or location, growth stage, soil and field conditions, symptoms, product name and formulation, application timing, prior treatments and planting date. For livestock, specify species, age, symptoms and production context. Do not treat added detail as a substitute for field inspection or professional judgment.
Rank #4
- For learning: “Explain what a herbicide plantback interval means, and list the label details I need to check for my crop and location.”
- For preparation: “What information should I gather before discussing these symptoms in my soybean field with a local agronomist?”
- For label navigation: “Which sections of the current product label address tank mixing and application timing? I will verify the directions on the actual label.”
Where the answer must not be the final decision
FBN’s Norm disclosures say the beta system is under testing and development, its outputs are provided “as is” and “as available,” and it cannot evaluate whether its statements are true. FBN warns that responses may be incomplete or inaccurate, says generated information is for general educational purposes, and tells users to disregard product recommendations or comparative claims. Its instructions require users to read and follow product labels and applicable federal and state law, and to consult a local agronomist. The disclosures also say Norm does not provide financial advice.
Use a chatbot differently depending on the stakes. Asking for an explanation of a term is not the same as asking it to authorize an application. A plausible answer may still omit a formulation difference, local restriction, field condition or crucial part of a label.
Best Value
- Pesticides and crop protection: verify rates, crops, timing, tank-mix compatibility, plantback intervals, re-entry and pre-harvest intervals, and state-specific registration against the current label and local requirements. The label and law govern; a generated answer does not.
- Animal health: do not use Norm to diagnose a sick animal or select a drug or withdrawal period in place of a veterinarian’s direction.
- Financial and marketing decisions: do not rely on it for borrowing, insurance, hedging or other consequential financial advice. FBN offers separate services, including FBN Finance, but Norm’s disclosures do not make it a substitute for a qualified financial professional.
- Urgent or high-consequence situations: contact the relevant qualified professional when crop loss, animal welfare, environmental risk or food safety may be at stake.
A practical verification workflow is to ask what factors and missing information matter; request the relevant source and the crop, state, product and timing assumptions; open the current manufacturer or regulator label; check state restrictions; and confirm the decision with an agronomist, crop adviser, veterinarian or other appropriate professional. Keep a record of the verified decision and its source. A chat transcript is not proof that a pesticide use is legally approved.

FBN continues to list Norm as an AI agronomic advisor and presents it as a member tool. Its 2026 planting-agronomics article describes Norm as one of several free tools available with FBN membership. FBN has also described a knowledge base drawing on USDA and extension material, agricultural publications, product labels, Seed Finder and FBN resources. An FBN community post claimed the system had been trained on more than 3,000 crop-protection labels; that is an FBN claim, not an independently audited count. (FBN’s planting tools article; FBN community post.)
Public descriptions support continued availability through FBN, but do not establish a current model version, independent accuracy benchmark, hallucination rate, formal safety certification, yield or cost improvements, or regulatory approval as a recommendation system. Early member testing is not evidence of those outcomes. FBN’s own disclosures—not an outside performance certification—are the clearest guide to how cautiously to use the service.
When Norm may be worth using
Norm is most defensible as a first-pass research and organization tool: explain terminology, identify what information is missing, brainstorm possible causes, or prepare questions for an adviser. It may help a farmer navigate agricultural topics more quickly, particularly within the FBN platform, but breadth of coverage is not proof of field-specific depth or accountability.
Farmers considering it should also weigh the platform context. FBN membership can provide access to Norm alongside other FBN tools, while FBN also operates input and finance services. The available public descriptions do not establish a separate Norm fee, an independent accuracy guarantee or a performance advantage. Review FBN’s current membership and data terms before entering sensitive farm information; the Norm pages cited here do not settle every question about how particular farm data is handled.
