Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a state Consumer Protection Act lawsuit against T-Mobile on January 6, 2025, alleging that the company failed to adequately protect customer information exposed in its 2021 data breach and did not give some Washington consumers complete, accurate notice. The state says 2,025,634 Washingtonians were affected, including 183,406 whose Social Security numbers were compromised.
What information did T-Mobile expose in the 2021 breach?
The Washington Attorney General’s office says the breach exposed information belonging to more than 79 million consumers nationwide. Data included names, phone numbers, physical addresses, driver’s-license information and other personal information. In Washington, the office reports that 2,025,634 residents were affected and that 183,406 had Social Security numbers compromised.
Those figures and descriptions come from the Attorney General’s account of the breach. They describe the information the state says was exposed; they do not mean that every affected person had every listed data type compromised.
Why is Washington suing T-Mobile?
The state alleges violations of Washington’s Consumer Protection Act. Its complaint says T-Mobile did not adequately secure customer information, failed to address known vulnerabilities, relied on weak or obvious credentials, made misleading public assurances, and gave some consumers breach notices that were incomplete or downplayed the incident. These are allegations in a lawsuit, not findings of liability.

Ferguson said, “This significant data breach was entirely avoidable,” and said T-Mobile had years to fix key vulnerabilities. That statement reflects the Attorney General’s position in bringing the case.
When did the intrusion happen, and when did T-Mobile discover it?
The Attorney General’s account says the breach began in March 2021 and continued until August 12, 2021, when T-Mobile learned of it after an outside source reported customer data for sale on the dark web. T-Mobile’s SEC filing gives a more specific account: the company became aware of unauthorized access on August 12, traced access to about March 18, and said data was taken beginning around August 3, 2021.

The accounts describe different points in the incident: when access may have started, when data was taken, and when the company learned of the unauthorized access. The March start and allegations about the company’s security practices are part of the state’s case; T-Mobile’s filing reports the company’s investigation findings.
What does Washington want the court to order?
The lawsuit seeks civil penalties and restitution for Washingtonians who were harmed. It also asks for an injunction requiring stronger cybersecurity policies and procedures and more transparent communications about cybersecurity incidents. The materials describing the filing do not specify a dollar amount for the state’s requested penalties or restitution.

How is the Washington lawsuit different from the $350 million federal settlement?
The Washington case is a state action brought by the Attorney General. The federal multidistrict class action was brought on behalf of private claimants and settled separately. T-Mobile says the federal settlement received final approval on June 29, 2023, all appeals were resolved, and the settlement became final.

The federal settlement does not itself resolve the separate state Attorney General case. The established procedural information for the Washington action is its January 2025 filing; no later disposition is established here.

Where can you find the federal settlement documents?
The court-authorized settlement website, supervised by counsel and administered by Kroll Settlement Administration, hosts the final approval order, claim form and other case documents. Those documents relate to the federal class action, not the separate Washington Attorney General lawsuit.
