There is no dependable one-size-fits-all price for automatic transmission repair: cost depends on the vehicle, the diagnosed fault, your location, and whether the work is a smaller repair, rebuild, or replacement. As U.S. reference points, RepairPal’s estimate updated September 3, 2026 puts transmission replacement at $6,238–$6,764, while AAA Club Alliance published broad ranges in July 2025 of $2,000–$4,500 for a rebuild and $2,900 to over $7,000 for replacement. These figures describe different scopes and estimation bases; neither is a quote for your car.

How much does automatic transmission repair cost?

The price depends on what has failed and what the shop proposes to do. A symptom alone cannot tell you whether the transmission needs a small repair, a rebuild, or replacement. Use the estimates below only as comparison points, then request a written quote for your exact vehicle and location.

Work or estimate Published figure What the figure means
Transmission replacement $6,238–$6,764 RepairPal U.S. estimate updated September 3, 2026. Its estimate includes labor of $1,127–$1,654 and parts around $5,110; taxes and fees, location variation, and potentially related repairs are excluded. Source: RepairPal
Transmission rebuild $2,000–$4,500 Broad range published by AAA Club Alliance on July 15, 2025; cost depends on make and model. Source: AAA Club Alliance
Transmission replacement $2,900 to over $7,000 Broad range published by AAA Club Alliance on July 15, 2025; cost depends on make and model. It is a separate estimate from RepairPal’s and should not be averaged with it. Source: AAA Club Alliance
Transmission filter and fluid change $621–$785 RepairPal U.S. estimate updated September 3, 2026, before taxes and fees and subject to location variation. This is a service estimate, not a price for repairing internal transmission damage. Source: RepairPal

The estimates are not directly interchangeable: they cover different work and use different estimation bases. A shop’s quote may also include charges the published figures exclude, or omit work you will need. Ask for the total out-the-door price and a written list of inclusions and exclusions.

What symptoms justify an inspection?

Arrange a prompt assessment if the vehicle shifts abruptly or harshly, slips, responds slowly when you select Drive or Reverse, fails to shift during normal acceleration, shakes during shifts, sticks in one gear, pops out of gear, or smells of burning. Slipping can feel like engine speed rising without a matching increase in vehicle speed. These symptoms are reasons to investigate, not proof that the transmission itself has failed.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that poor transmission performance can result from component failure or a simpler issue such as a disconnected hose or plugged filter. Low or dirty fluid, a sensor, solenoid, wiring, transmission control module, shift linkage, or a broken axle may also be relevant possibilities. A warning light or diagnostic code can help guide troubleshooting, but the code alone does not establish the root cause. FTC: Auto Repair Basics; Cars.com: common signs of transmission failure.

How to get a diagnosis you can evaluate

  1. Record what happens. Note the symptom, when it occurs, whether the vehicle is cold or warm, and whether it happens in a particular gear or while selecting Drive or Reverse.
  2. Read any warning codes, but treat them as clues. An OBD-II code reader can retrieve codes when a warning light appears. Check compatibility with your vehicle before buying one, and do not treat a code as a diagnosis; a technician may need to determine whether the cause is in the transmission, wiring, sensors, or another system.
  3. Ask what testing supports the recommendation. Request the findings and proposed repair in writing. The FTC says simple causes such as a disconnected hose or plugged filter should be checked before assuming a component has failed.
  4. Get a second opinion for a major replacement when practical. Make sure the second shop has the same symptom description and can review the first shop’s written findings.
  5. Check vehicle-specific coverage. Look up applicable recalls, warranty extensions, and manufacturer service information using the exact year, make, model, and transmission. A Subaru CVT warranty extension in bulletin 16-155-25R applied only to specified vehicles and model years, and its stated extension period ended June 30, 2026; confirm current eligibility for the vehicle in question. Subaru bulletin 16-155-25R in NHTSA’s archive.

How do repair, rebuild, and replacement differ?

Option What to clarify in the quote
Smaller or external repair Ask whether the diagnosis points to a leak, electrical fault, sensor, solenoid, linkage, or another issue that does not require replacing the assembly. The appropriate repair depends on test findings.
Rebuild Ask which internal parts will be inspected, repaired, or replaced. Clarify whether hard parts, clutches, seals, the torque converter, and testing are included; “rebuild” does not necessarily mean the same scope at every shop.
Replacement Ask whether the installed unit is new, used, rebuilt, or remanufactured. Confirm labor, programming, fluid and cooler work, core charges, related repairs, and warranty terms in writing. Replacement can sometimes cost less than repair, especially for an older vehicle, but the right choice depends on the diagnosis and vehicle.

Compare written estimates on the same basis: diagnostic evidence, parts provenance, included labor and ancillary work, total price, expected completion time, and the parts-and-labor warranty. No universal warranty duration or single best option applies across vehicles; get the shop’s terms in writing.

Can I wait on a transmission repair?

Do not assume it is safe to keep driving when the vehicle is slipping, failing to engage, shifting unpredictably, or showing other serious symptoms. A delay may leave you with a vehicle that cannot move reliably, and symptoms can worsen; the specific risk depends on the fault. Ask the diagnosing shop whether the vehicle is safe to drive and whether it should be towed. If it loses drive or becomes unsafe to control, stop in a safe place and arrange assistance.

What happens if I do not change the transmission fluid?

Transmission fluid lubricates and cools components; in an automatic transmission it also provides hydraulic action. AAA notes that old or dirty fluid may contribute to poor shifting, overheating, or failure. That does not mean a fluid change will fix damage that has already been diagnosed, or that every vehicle uses the same fluid or service interval.

Follow the owner’s manual and model-specific service procedure. Fluid types are not generally interchangeable, and some modern transmissions lack an ordinary dipstick or require a particular checking and service procedure. Do not use generic fluid or treat a flush as a cure for diagnosed internal damage. AAA Club Alliance: checking and maintaining transmission fluid; RepairPal: filter and fluid change estimate.

How can I avoid overpaying?

  • Get a written, vehicle-specific quote after diagnosis, not just a price based on a symptom.
  • Ask the shop to separate parts, labor, diagnostic charges, taxes, fees, and related work.
  • Compare the same repair scope and unit type across shops; a rebuild quote is not comparable to a replacement quote unless the work is clearly itemized.
  • Confirm what ancillary work is included, such as fluid, cooler service, programming, or a core charge.
  • Get warranty coverage and exclusions in writing, including whether it covers parts, labor, and related failures.

Give each shop the exact year, make, model, engine, transmission if known, and location, plus the diagnostic findings. That is the only useful basis for turning national estimates into a local repair decision.
