Australia’s highest-paid roles can pay substantially more than typical employee earnings, but the headline figures are not starting salaries or guaranteed outcomes. Jobs and Skills Australia reports May 2025 median weekly earnings of $3,905 for surgeons and $3,620 for specialist physicians; reaching those careers requires extensive training and registration. For a realistic career change, compare earnings with entry requirements, job prospects and how well the work fits your skills and circumstances.

What counts as a high-paying job in Australia?

There is no single salary ranking that answers what every career changer can expect. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) report different earnings measures for different worker populations, so their figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

The ABS’s August 2025 employee-earnings release reports median weekly earnings in a main job of $1,425 across employees. By occupation group, the median was $2,072 for Managers and $1,900 for Professionals. These figures include a broader range of employees than JSA’s occupation-specific estimates.

Within ABS sub-major occupation groups, the August 2025 medians were $3,223 a week for Chief Executives, General Managers and Legislators, $2,310 for Specialist Managers, and $2,300 for ICT Professionals. These are group-level medians, not a ranking of every job title or a promise about an individual’s pay. Weekly earnings also reflect differences in hours worked: the ABS reported median hourly earnings of $59.50 for Professionals and $58.80 for Managers.

JSA’s occupation profiles use May 2025 ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours data for full-time, non-managerial employees paid adult rates. The figures are before tax and salary sacrifice. JSA excludes managers, part-time employees and youths from this measure, and cautions that the estimates are guides, not wage rates. Experience and other factors affect actual pay. See JSA occupation profiles and earnings methodology.

Which occupations have the highest reported earnings?

JSA’s 29 April 2026 article reports May 2025 median weekly earnings of $3,905 for Surgeons and $3,620 for Specialist Physicians. These are high reported medians for the specified worker measure, not entry-level salaries, take-home pay or forecasts for people entering the field.

For context, ABS figures for August 2025 show high medians across broader occupation groups too: Chief Executives, General Managers and Legislators at $3,223 a week, Specialist Managers at $2,310, and ICT Professionals at $2,300. Because the ABS and JSA figures cover different populations and occupation classifications, use each as context within its own method rather than combining them into one league table. JSA’s article also reports that 95% of the mining workforce was employed full time; this describes employment status, not a salary or guarantee of a suitable vacancy.

For occupation-level context, see JSA’s article on high-paying jobs and the ABS August 2025 employee earnings release.

What does it take to reach these earnings?

Surgeons and specialist physicians

The reported medical medians sit at the end of long professional pathways, not at the point of changing careers. Becoming a specialist involves formal medical education and registration, followed by further supervised training and specialty requirements. Before treating the reported earnings as a personal option, check the current entry, registration and training requirements for the specific medical role and jurisdiction. The earnings figure alone does not tell you how long the pathway takes, what study will cost, or what you might earn during training.

Management and ICT roles

The ABS’s high-earning occupation groups include senior leaders, specialist managers and ICT professionals, but group medians do not specify a single qualification or route into the work. Requirements vary by role and employer. A career changer should inspect the occupation profile and job requirements for the specific role, then distinguish skills they can already demonstrate from credentials or experience they still need.

Mining and other industries

JSA’s finding that 95% of mining workers were employed full time can help describe the workforce, but it does not establish that all mining roles pay alike or that a particular opening is accessible. Check the relevant occupation profile for earnings, work requirements and employment context rather than using an industry-wide fact as a proxy for an individual job.

How to compare a career change with the salary headline

Use more than pay to decide whether an occupation is a plausible move. JSA’s Australian Jobs matrix brings together employment, earnings bands, skill level and projected employment change over five years to May 2030. A projection is modelled labour-market context, not a promise that a job will be available to you.

  • Earnings: Check the period, weekly or hourly basis, worker population and occupation definition. Compare like with like, and remember that median earnings are not guaranteed pay.
  • Entry requirements: Confirm qualifications, licensing, registration, supervised practice and any jurisdiction-specific rules through the relevant official occupation or regulator information.
  • Employment and outlook: Use JSA occupation profiles and the Australian Jobs matrix to understand employment size and projected change, while treating projections as estimates rather than personal job assurances.
  • Personal fit: Weigh interests, aptitudes, working conditions, transferable skills and tolerance for retraining alongside remuneration.

JSA advises that career choices should consider “all factors, including interest and aptitudes, remuneration and expectations, and the requirements of occupations.” Explore its Australian Jobs matrix alongside occupation profiles before settling on a target.

A practical sequence for planning the transition

  1. Shortlist roles that match your existing skills and qualifications. Start with work you can plausibly move toward, not just the largest salary figure.
  2. Check the official occupation profile and actual entry requirements. Identify required credentials, registration, experience and working conditions for the particular role.
  3. Map transferable skills and gaps. Compare what you have done with what employers and formal pathways require; note which gaps need study or supervised experience.
  4. Compare training routes and costs. Consider VET, TAFE or university only after confirming that the course is relevant to the required qualification or skill.
  5. Test the move before making a large commitment. Informational interviews, relevant short courses or adjacent roles can help you learn about the work and pathway.

Australian Government career guidance recommends matching experience to new careers, identifying skills gaps and considering VET, university or TAFE where needed. It also points jobseekers to Workforce Australia’s Job Switch and the Your Career Career Quiz. Start with the Australian Government career-planning guidance and check the linked tools and current course requirements before committing to retraining.
