What to check before accepting a phone deal
A “free” phone offer may be delivered through bill credits over time rather than an immediate price reduction. AT&T’s official terms describe 36-month installment agreements, qualifying plans and trade-ins, and monthly credits. If service is canceled, credits may stop and the remaining device balance may become due. - Trade-in requirements: Check eligible models, minimum value, and condition rules; do not assume every old phone qualifies.
- Line requirement: Verify whether the deal requires a new line or applies to an upgrade.
- Credit schedule: Find out how many months credits take, when they begin, and what happens if you change plans or cancel service.
- Total cost: Account for taxes, fees, installments, and any remaining device balance—not only the advertised discount.

April’s separate discount for eligible internet customers
In a separate April 27, 2026 announcement, AT&T said eligible Access from AT&T customers could receive $25 off Internet Air each month. Eligibility is tied to the Access program, which AT&T says is available to households participating in 18 federal need-based assistance programs. AT&T’s announcement also cited its broader connectivity commitments and network reach, but those figures do not change the discount’s eligibility or turn it into a general consumer coupon. Check the program page and current service terms to confirm whether you qualify.
