What happened at Atlanta’s airport on March 22?
The Associated Press reported that some travelers waited nearly six hours at the main security checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Midafternoon, two TSA agents were checking IDs at that checkpoint, according to the AP. Those details describe the reported conditions that day, not normal operations or today’s queue.
On March 23, Axios reported extensive TSA callouts at ATL during the preceding week, after officers had worked for more than a month without pay during the partial federal shutdown. Axios said more than one-third of ATL officers called out sick. The same article reported that four of 18 screening lanes were open on March 22, attributing that lane count to CNN. These are reported figures, not independently confirmed official TSA statistics.
Did Delta staff or other federal personnel help with security lines?
The available reporting does not establish that Delta employees stepped in to conduct security screening, or identify specific duties performed by Delta staff during the incident. The AP described a proposed deployment of federal personnel to assist with line management and crowd control. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens’s statement said, as quoted by the AP, “Federal officials have indicated that this deployment is not intended to conduct immigration enforcement activities.”

The distinction matters: helping manage a queue is not the same as operating TSA screening equipment or conducting passenger screening. The AP quoted Tom Homan on the proposal: “I don’t see an ICE agent looking at an X-ray machine, because we’re not trained in that.” His remark addressed the proposed role; it is not independent confirmation of what happened at each checkpoint.
How long are TSA lines at ATL now?
The six-hour wait belongs to March 22, not October 7, 2026. At the displayed update times on October 7, Delta’s ATL tracker showed estimates of 5 minutes at Main, 12 at North, 7 at Lower North, 0 at South, and 9 at International Main. Delta displayed an overall last update of 6:27 PM. ATL’s tracker showed 8 minutes at Lower North, 2 at South (PreCheck-only), and 14 at International Main, each marked updated at 5:55 PM. These are time-specific snapshots, not predictions for a later trip.

The trackers can differ because they update at different times. Check the relevant checkpoint and terminal, note the displayed update time, and verify again before leaving for the airport:

During the disruption, Delta advised travelers on March 26 to arrive early, allow extra time for security, and check the departure airport’s website for current information. The airline said on March 31 that waits had returned to more typical levels across its system, including Atlanta. That update describes conditions at that time; it does not guarantee a particular wait on a future travel date.

- Check the tracker for the checkpoint you expect to use, distinguishing domestic and international departures where applicable.
- Look at when each estimate was updated. A stale reading may not reflect conditions when you arrive.
- Leave extra time if current information or your circumstances warrant it; a tracker estimate is not a promise of how long screening will take.
