Atari bought the Intellivision brand and rights to certain games in May 2024, but it did not buy the entire company or its Amico console business. The deal brings together two names associated with what Atari calls the “first console war”; that historical label and the claim that the rivalry lasted 45 years are Atari’s framing, not a universally settled ranking.
What did Atari buy from Intellivision?
Atari announced the transaction on May 23, 2024. It acquired the Intellivision brand and certain game rights from Intellivision Entertainment LLC—not the seller as a whole. Atari’s current Intellivision page says its rights cover more than 200 titles in the portfolio; that is not a claim that more than 200 games were released for the original console. Atari’s Intellivision page and deal announcement describe the scope.
Atari said it intended to pursue digital and physical distribution for certain legacy games, potentially develop new games, and explore licensing opportunities. Those were announced plans, not a promise that every proposed release would happen.
Did Atari buy the Amico?
No. The deal did not include Intellivision Entertainment’s Amico console business. Atari said the seller would rebrand and continue developing and distributing Amico under an Atari license to distribute new versions of Intellivision games. The Amico FAQ provides platform context; the acquisition announcement sets out the license and transaction scope.

Why is the deal described as ending the first console war?
Mattel Electronics released the original Intellivision home console in 1979 to compete with the Atari 2600. Atari’s retrospective presents their rivalry as the “first console war,” and notes that Mattel also published games for Atari’s console under its M Network label. That history makes the companies’ later convergence an apt symbolic bookend, but “first” is a company-framed description rather than a definitive consensus among historians. See Atari’s account of the rivalry.
Atari’s 2024 announcement estimated that the Intellivision platform had sold 5 million units through 1990. The estimate is Atari’s, and its stated period ends in 1990; it should not be read as a current sales figure. Atari also described the unification as ending a console war after 45 years. That span is the company’s characterization of the rivalry, not an independently calculated market statistic.

What does “uniting Atari and Intellivision” mean today?
It means Atari now controls the Intellivision brand and rights to certain games, creating scope for legacy-game releases, new titles, and licensing. It does not mean the Amico hardware business became part of Atari. Atari currently promotes the Intellivision Sprint on its brand page, a product tie-in to the acquired name; the page alone does not establish retailer stock or availability.
Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, is quoted on Atari’s official page saying: “Uniting Atari and Intellivision after 45 years ends the longest running console war in history,” Atari’s Intellivision page. The quotation captures the company’s celebratory framing, rather than establishing a universally agreed historical superlative.
