AstroForge’s Odin spacecraft did travel beyond the Moon after launching on February 26, 2025, but the company lost reliable contact with it after separation from its Falcon 9 rocket. A reported failure at AstroForge’s Australian ground station delayed an early contact attempt; later efforts did not restore communications. The available accounts do not establish that the amplifier failure was the spacecraft’s definitive root cause, or confirm Odin’s location today.
What happened to AstroForge’s Odin spacecraft?
Odin was a small spacecraft sent to image asteroid 2022 OB5 during a flyby. The mission was not an attempt to mine the asteroid. AstroForge describes Odin as carrying multispectral cameras; its mission page lists a mass of 105 kg, while the company’s missions overview rounds that to 100 kg. In short, it was a roughly 100 kg spacecraft.
Odin launched on February 26, 2025, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. After separation, AstroForge was unable to establish reliable communications. Gizmodo reported on March 6 that a failed power amplifier at the company’s primary Australian ground station delayed the first planned contact attempt. The company then tried to command the spacecraft and used additional recording equipment and dishes, but those attempts did not restore contact, according to the report.
AstroForge’s later account says Odin passed the Moon and returned a few signals. It also lists communications, ground-station, solar-panel and deployment challenges. That is the company’s retrospective, not an independently published anomaly investigation.

Did the ground-station failure cause Odin to go silent?
The sequence is reported; a definitive cause is not. The amplifier problem delayed an early opportunity to contact Odin, but the available accounts do not establish whether that delay caused the later loss of communications or merely preceded it. AstroForge’s summary names multiple technical challenges without identifying a final root cause.
It is therefore more accurate to say AstroForge lost reliable contact after separation than to say the amplifier failure alone caused the loss. The sources also do not establish that Odin was destroyed or permanently unrecoverable.

Where was Odin, and what is known about its status now?
Gizmodo reported on March 6, 2025, that Odin was estimated to be about 270,000 miles (434,522 kilometers) from Earth. That was an estimate for the situation at that time, not a current location fix. AstroForge’s current Odin page says the spacecraft passed the Moon and sent a few signals, but does not provide a precise present position.
Gizmodo also reported that AstroForge asked observatories and amateur astronomers to help locate Odin, which was too faint for smaller telescopes. Founder Matt Gialich told the publication, “I think we all know the hope is fading as we continue the mission.” The remark reflects the team’s outlook at the time; it does not establish the spacecraft’s current status.

What was Odin meant to accomplish?
Odin’s objective was to capture images of asteroid 2022 OB5 during a flyby. AstroForge presents it as a technology and deep-space mission, not a mining operation. The company says it built the spacecraft in under 10 months for $3.5 million; those are company-reported figures, not independently verified costs.
AstroForge’s mission page summarizes the flight this way: “We made it past the Moon, got a few signals back, and proved that we could build and launch something that would reach deep space.” That is the company’s assessment of the mission, not an independent determination of how much of its technical objectives were achieved.

What comes next for AstroForge?
AstroForge presents DeepSpace-2 as a future mission, but its mission page gives conflicting schedule information: a “Launching 2027” heading and a statement that it would launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has not provided a consistent date on that page, so the schedule should be treated as uncertain rather than settled.
Before Odin launched, AstroForge senior policy advisor Steven Place described a roadmap in testimony to a U.S. House committee on February 25, 2025. He said the company’s first mission in 2023 tested early refining technology in low Earth orbit, while later missions were planned to examine an asteroid and then land and measure ore concentration. That testimony records plans made before Odin flew; it is not proof that those later missions took place as described.
