Astera Labs’ Toronto-area expansion is an engineering investment, not a consumer technology launch. The company opened an R&D design center in Markham, Ontario, to develop connectivity products for AI and machine-learning infrastructure and to draw on the region’s engineering talent. A 2024 company statement later confirmed Toronto and Vancouver among its existing R&D centers.
What is Astera Labs’ Toronto expansion?
Astera Labs’ facility is in Markham, part of the Greater Toronto Area, and was described as an R&D design center. In a June 14, 2022 report, EE Times said the center would develop intelligent connectivity solutions for machine-learning and AI infrastructure, with work spanning end-to-end silicon technology and product development.
That scope makes the Markham site more than a sales outpost. Astera Labs chief business officer Sanjay Gajendra described the operation as “a fully self-contained business unit,” with functions including product design, testing, validation, marketing and customer support.
Why did Astera Labs open an R&D center in Markham?
Gajendra pointed to the area’s engineering talent, university graduates and established semiconductor and technology companies. He also framed the investment as a way to retain North American talent. The company saw potential to work with local universities on semiconductor development and on deploying AI and machine-learning infrastructure in the cloud.

The company’s engineering work sits within its rack-scale AI connectivity portfolio. Astera Labs’ current careers page connects that work to products including PCIe/CXL retimers, smart cable modules, fabric switches and memory controllers. These are specialized components for enterprise and data-center infrastructure, not consumer devices.

A Principal FW/SW Engineer posting describes embedded-software responsibilities that include hardware abstraction, calibration, link management, diagnostics, validation and customer deployment, as well as Ethernet and connectivity engineering. In 2022, Gajendra described Toronto and Vancouver as anchor locations for planned Canadian investment and expansion. That was a statement of intent at the time, not proof that every contemplated investment had already happened. A later company announcement provides a firmer milestone: on June 27, 2024, Astera Labs said its planned India site would join existing R&D centers in Santa Clara, Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, and Haifa, Israel. The dated confirmation appears in the company’s June 2024 release.

Those listings show examples of engineering hiring activity at that time; they do not establish how many roles remain open or how long they will stay available.
