According to the report, Piper’s concerns center on whether AST can deploy satellites as quickly as expected during 2026–27 and on SpaceX’s growing direct-to-cell ambitions. Competition could matter through several possible channels:

AST SpaceMobile’s Q2 2026 company update reported 13 spacecraft in orbit and preparation for beta service with selected strategic partners. The company also reported more than 60 mobile-network-operator partners whose combined coverage represents over 3 billion subscribers. That figure describes reported partner reach; it does not mean those subscribers are paying AST customers, have access to a completed service, or will adopt it.

AST’s earlier Q1 2026 materials said a Block 1 BlueBird satellite demonstrated a peak data speed of 98.9 Mbps in orbit. That is a company-reported demonstration, not an independent benchmark of a commercial service. In May 2026, CEO Abel Avellan described a target of approximately 45 satellites in orbit during 2026, supported by manufacturing cadence and a multi-partner launch strategy. This was a forward-looking target; the later Q2 update reported 13 satellites in orbit, not completion of the target.

Revenue, backlog, and cash: progress, not proof of execution

These figures indicate reported commercial progress and financial resources, but they do not remove the need to build and operate the network, secure approvals, complete commercial arrangements, and attract paying users. AST’s own materials also caution readers not to place undue reliance on forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date made.

What the downgrade does—and does not—tell an ASTS investor
The downgrade is evidence that Piper Sandler, as described in the October 13 report, sees a less favorable balance of risk and potential value than before. It is not proof that AST’s business model has failed, that SpaceX has caused a decline in the shares, or that AST will miss its goals. Equally, reported partner reach, backlog, cash, and company targets do not guarantee a successful commercial network.

For a personal investment decision, separate the analyst’s opinion from company-reported results and your own assumptions. The material uncertainties include launch timing, manufacturing, regulatory approvals, final commercial agreements, service adoption and pricing, liquidity needs, and competition. Avoid treating a target as a substitute for assessing those risks or for considering your time horizon and ability to absorb losses.
