That is a historical estimate, not a verified sale price or a current appraisal. The same report says Zurich voided Jones’s policy after learning of an earlier, undisclosed insurance claim, and that Jones’s case against the insurer was dismissed after a three-day High Court hearing.
What happened to the Rolex Daytona?
Time+Tide reported that Jones was skiing in Aspen, Colorado, in March 2019 when he crashed. His 1976 Rolex Daytona, described in the report as having a tropical dial, came off his wrist and disappeared in the snow. The account does not establish the watch’s exact reference number or what ultimately happened to it.
Why did Zurich refuse the insurance claim?
According to Time+Tide’s 31 May 2021 report, Zurich had issued a policy for £4,250. When the insurer later discovered an earlier claim for £15,000 over a missing diamond from a former girlfriend’s vintage ring, it voided the policy. The report says the earlier claim was made in 2016 and had not been disclosed when Zurich asked about claims in the previous five years.
The report says Jones sued Zurich and his case was dismissed after a three-day High Court hearing. It also says the policy had been arranged by Jones’s uncle and executive assistant, Thomas Trautmann, and that Jones later acknowledged his uncle had helped with the diamond claim. Time+Tide quotes Judge Pelling describing inaccuracies in Jones’s evidence as showing “at the very least a fairly fundamental lack of recall of critical events”. This is the secondary report’s account of the court proceedings; the judgment itself was not available to verify the precise legal reasoning or terms.

Was the watch really worth $350,000?
Time+Tide reported an approximate value of AUD $350,000. That figure should not be read as US dollars, a confirmed transaction, or an up-to-date valuation. The available account does not identify an appraisal, sale, or insurance replacement valuation for this particular watch.
Watch valuations depend on what is being valued and why. PBS Antiques Roadshow notes that condition, market trends, location, and the estimate’s context can affect value; an insurance appraisal is a formal document, and appraisers may disagree. An auction result, a retail asking price, and an insurance replacement value are different kinds of figures, not interchangeable measures.

What is a 1976 Rolex Daytona worth today?
The available sources do not establish a current value for Jones’s lost watch. A meaningful estimate would require details not provided in the incident report, including the exact reference and configuration, condition and originality, provenance, and supporting documentation. Without those details and a clearly stated valuation basis, a single figure would be speculative.
One striking Daytona sale illustrates why headline auction prices are not a shortcut to valuing another watch: Hodinkee reported that Paul Newman’s personal Daytona sold in 2017 for $17,752,500, including buyer’s premium. The article linked that exceptional result to the watch’s distinctive provenance and influence. It is not a direct comparison with Jones’s watch or a price benchmark for vintage Daytonas generally.
