Arm Confirms Treasure Data Acquisition and Pelion IoT Platform Plan

Arm completed its Treasure Data acquisition in 2018 and described Pelion as a platform for managing IoT devices, connectivity, and data. The reported $600 million price was not confirmed, and Arm later disposed of the businesses.

Arm confirmed that it completed its acquisition of Treasure Data on August 2, 2018, and presented the company as the final piece of a broader IoT offering called the Arm Pelion IoT Platform. Arm did not disclose a confirmed purchase price; the often-cited $600 million figure remained an unconfirmed report.

What Arm acquired and why

Arm said the Treasure Data acquisition closed on August 2, 2018. It positioned Treasure Data alongside two existing parts of its IoT strategy: Stream connectivity management and Arm Mbed Cloud. Arm’s president of IoT Services Group, Dipesh Patel, called Treasure Data “the final piece of our IoT enablement puzzle.” (Arm, August 2, 2018)

The combined offering was named the Arm Pelion IoT Platform. Arm’s stated ambition was to bring device, network-connectivity, and data management together rather than offer only one layer of an IoT deployment. These were Arm’s descriptions of the intended platform, not independent verification of its performance.

What the Pelion platform was meant to do

Three management functions

  • Device management: manage connected devices.
  • Connectivity management: manage the connections linking devices and services.
  • Data management: handle the data generated by connected devices.

Arm said Pelion was designed to work across varied devices and wireless standards. It also described deployment options spanning public and private cloud, on-premises infrastructure, and hybrid environments. The announcement presented Pelion as a horizontal platform rather than a solution limited to one vertical or vendor-specific environment; that positioning was Arm’s own claim. (Arm, August 2, 2018)

Scale figures Arm reported in 2018

In its announcement, Arm cited more than 140 partners, more than 300 customers, a capacity of two million events per second, and 50 trillion records per day. These are company-reported figures from 2018, not current metrics or independent measurements. (Arm, August 2, 2018)

Was Treasure Data bought for $600 million?

Arm did not confirm the reported $600 million transaction value. In a contemporaneous account, EE Times quoted Arm chief marketing officer Joyce Kim saying, “I can confirm it’s the largest cash deal we have ever done.” The quote confirms the deal’s relative size in Arm’s history, but it does not establish a dollar amount; $600 million should therefore be treated as an unconfirmed report, not the disclosed final price. What happened to Treasure Data and Pelion afterward?

In July 2020, Arm proposed transferring its IoT Platform and Treasure Data businesses to new SoftBank-owned entities. That announcement described a proposal subject to review and closing conditions, not a completed transfer. (Arm, July 2020)

Arm’s later filing records the subsequent outcomes: Treasure Data equity was distributed to Arm shareholders in June 2021, and Pelion IoT was sold to SoftBank subsidiaries in November 2021. Arm classified Treasure Data and IoTP as discontinued operations after their distribution or sale. (Arm filing)

As a result, the 2018 announcement is historical corporate news; it should not be read as saying Pelion IoT or Treasure Data remains an Arm offering today.
