Arista Networks acquired Broadcom’s VeloCloud SD-WAN business on June 30, 2025, and announced the transaction on July 1. The deal gives Arista a mature cloud-managed WAN and branch platform to complement its data-center switching, routing, campus, and wireless products. The purchase does not instantly “reboot” SD-WAN, nor is VeloCloud an AI-compute company. Its importance is that Arista can now pursue a more complete client-to-cloud network for distributed applications, including AI workloads.

What Arista bought

Arista bought the VeloCloud SD-WAN portfolio and business unit—not Broadcom’s entire VMware networking estate or all of its security products. The acquired assets include VeloCloud Edge hardware and virtual platforms, cloud orchestration, gateways, application-aware traffic steering, secure firewalling, encryption, segmentation, and optional Wi-Fi and 5G connectivity.

VeloCloud’s orchestration and support resources are now provided through Arista. Arista’s VeloCloud resources page contains product documentation, software downloads, support information, and service-status links.

Why VeloCloud became available

VeloCloud was founded in 2012 and acquired by VMware in 2017. When Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023, VeloCloud became part of Broadcom’s VMware portfolio. Broadcom later sold the business to Arista.

The likely explanation is portfolio fit. Broadcom has emphasized VMware Cloud Foundation, virtualization, private cloud, and infrastructure software. Analysts interpreted VeloCloud as less central to that strategy, but Broadcom has not publicly established that as its official reason for selling the business.

The transaction closed on June 30, 2025, according to Arista’s partner FAQ.

The portfolio gap Arista filled

Network domain Arista before VeloCloud VeloCloud contribution
Data center Major strength in switching, routing, and leaf-spine architectures WAN connectivity into distributed sites
Campus Switching, wireless, and network-management products Branch and remote-site extension
WAN CloudEOS and high-end WAN routing Cloud-managed SD-WAN and edge platforms
Branch Partial coverage Edge hardware, firewalling, application-aware traffic management, and multi-link connectivity
Security Existing capabilities and partner integrations Integrated edge security, with Arista-developed security announced later

That makes the strategic logic straightforward: Arista can connect data centers, campuses, branches, remote offices, and cloud services through a broader networking portfolio instead of relying as heavily on separate WAN vendors.

Is this really an AI acquisition?

Only in the broader architectural sense. VeloCloud is fundamentally an SD-WAN and WAN-edge business, not an AI-model, GPU, or data-center-fabric company.

Arista linked the acquisition to distributed generative and agentic AI strategies. AI applications can depend on data, users, and services spread across data centers, cloud platforms, campuses, branches, and remote locations. Those environments need reliable paths, policy-based traffic steering, security, and operational visibility.

VeloCloud can help manage the WAN surrounding those applications. It does not, by itself, solve AI networking or guarantee better AI latency, throughput, or availability. The defensible interpretation is that Arista wants to extend AI-era network operations beyond the data center to the branch and WAN edge.

  1. Abstract multiple underlay connections, such as broadband, private WAN, wireless, and 5G.
  2. Measure path quality, including loss, latency, and jitter.
  3. Steer applications over paths according to policy and current conditions.
  4. Encrypt and segment traffic between sites and services.
  5. Centralize configuration and monitoring through cloud orchestration.
  6. Provide visibility and troubleshooting across many distributed locations.

VeloCloud brings those capabilities together with application identification, application-optimized policies, integrated firewalling, proactive monitoring, and AI/ML-assisted traffic-management functions described by Arista.

What changed for customers and partners

Arista initially said VeloCloud would continue to be sold, with no planned service interruption or immediate changes to existing VeloCloud solutions. Customers were directed to Arista support, documentation, downloads, and service-status resources.

The transition still involved commercial and administrative changes. Arista’s partner FAQ stated that existing Broadcom SKUs had a six-month transaction grace period and that orders processed from January 1, 2026, would use new Arista SKUs. The VeloCloud MSP program was not retired, although its branding and mapping into Arista’s channel structure changed.

These are stated transition policies, not a guarantee that every customer received identical renewal pricing, contractual treatment, support commitments, or channel arrangements. Buyers should verify those details in their own geography and contract.

The security complication

The acquisition did not automatically create a complete, permanently integrated single-vendor SASE stack.

Arista said VeloCloud SASE secured by Symantec would stop being orderable on July 1, 2025, with support ending June 30, 2026. The company said it was working with multiple SSE vendors rather than presenting Symantec as the permanent security layer. Customers using that offering needed a replacement or migration plan.

Arista later announced Edge Threat Management for VeloCloud SD-WAN on July 21, 2026. The announced capabilities include zero-trust branch protection, firewalling, threat prevention, segmentation, Geo-IP and DNS filtering, and AI-powered policy insights. However, general availability was planned for Q4 2026. It should therefore be treated as a roadmap item as of August 18, 2026—not as a generally available product.

Licensing and buying considerations

Arista’s VeloCloud documentation describes bandwidth tiers from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps, Standard, Enterprise, and Premium editions, 12-, 36-, and 60-month terms, regional options, and trial licensing. The 6.0 and 6.4 documentation also shows a large matrix of possible license combinations.

There is no universal public retail price to use for a meaningful comparison. A quote can depend on bandwidth, edition, term, geography, hardware or virtual edge, support, partner route, and managed-service arrangements. Buyers should request a deployment-specific bill of materials rather than comparing a headline license number.

Who should consider Arista VeloCloud?

  • Organizations already invested in Arista data-center, campus, or wireless infrastructure.
  • Enterprises with many branches that need centralized policy and orchestration.
  • Businesses using multiple WAN links and application-aware traffic steering.
  • Teams that want to connect distributed sites supporting cloud and data-intensive applications.
  • Buyers that prefer an established SD-WAN platform over building WAN automation internally.

Who should be cautious?

  • Organizations that need a mature, immediately available single-vendor SASE platform.
  • Customers dependent on the discontinued Symantec-secured VeloCloud service.
  • Buyers requiring transparent self-service pricing.
  • Small networks where licensing and orchestration overhead may outweigh the benefit.
  • Enterprises already standardized on another security platform and unwilling to operate a multi-vendor SSE architecture.
  • Organizations uncomfortable with another ownership transition or changing product roadmap.

Questions to ask before renewing or migrating

  1. Which VeloCloud software release is recommended for this deployment?
  2. Which required features are included in Standard, Enterprise, and Premium editions?
  3. Is Edge Threat Management available now, or only planned for Q4 2026?
  4. What replaces VeloCloud SASE secured by Symantec?
  5. Which SSE integrations are supported, and who provides support for each layer?
  6. Are existing contracts and renewal terms being honored?
  7. What happens to older Edge hardware?
  8. What support-response commitments apply in the customer’s region?
  9. Which functions require Arista hardware versus virtual edges?
  10. How are orchestrators, gateways, APIs, telemetry exports, and data residency handled?
  11. Can VeloCloud operate alongside a non-Arista campus or data-center network?
  12. Which AI-related features are available production capabilities rather than positioning language?

The investor and buyer takeaway

For Arista, VeloCloud is a logical portfolio-completion acquisition. It adds a credible branch and WAN capability to a company already strong in data-center networking, campus switching, routing, and wireless.

For customers, the deal is more nuanced. Arista maintained VeloCloud as an active product line and managed the initial transition without announcing a planned service interruption. But SKU changes, the retirement of the Symantec-secured service, licensing complexity, and the still-developing Edge Threat Management roadmap show that continuity and long-term product evolution are different claims.

The acquisition’s success will depend less on the press-release AI narrative than on execution: integrating WAN operations with Arista’s broader platform, delivering the security roadmap, keeping licensing understandable, and retaining customers through another ownership change. VeloCloud may strengthen Arista’s position in AI-era enterprise networking, but buyers should evaluate it as an SD-WAN and secure-branch platform—not as a complete answer to AI infrastructure or SASE by default.
