These are September estimates of intended area—not confirmed acreage or final harvest figures. The BCR’s normal-condition corn production horizon is 67.5 million tonnes; 70.5 million tonnes is a weather-dependent upside possibility, not the baseline.
What changed in the BCR’s September estimate?
In its September 9, 2026 estimate, the BCR revised the area farmers intend to plant in the 2026/27 crop year. Corn gained area in the revision, while soybean planting intention moved down.

The soybean revision is a reduction from the BCR’s earlier intention estimate, not a year-over-year decline in intended area. The exchange’s September 9 figures are available in its monthly national estimate.
What do the production figures mean?
Corn: 67.5 million tonnes is the normal-condition horizon
The BCR put 2026/27 corn production at 67.5 million tonnes under normal conditions. It said output could approach 70.5 million tonnes if favorable weather materializes. That higher figure would match the BCR’s reported 2025/26 corn record, but it is an upside scenario rather than the September 9 baseline.

Soybeans: 47.8 million tonnes projected
For 2026/27 soybeans, the BCR projected 47.8 million tonnes using assumptions about average non-harvested area and yield. In its September 18 outlook, it described that projection as 7% below the previous campaign. The same outlook put 2025/26 production at 51.5 million tonnes for soybeans and 70.5 million tonnes for corn.
Those production numbers are projections, not harvested output. The BCR’s September 18 preliminary outlook says summer-crop estimates use trend yields and remain tentative while the season unfolds.

Why is corn gaining ground relative to soybeans?
The BCR linked the change in planting intentions to shifting crop economics. In its margin comparison, the exchange wrote: “En la comparación de márgenes, el maíz empieza a ganarle área a la soja” (“In the margin comparison, corn is beginning to gain area over soybeans”). It also cited corn leafhopper control and freight costs as pressures on corn’s economics. Commercial discounts and input promotions were helping soften the expected area decline, according to the exchange and its technical sources.
This is the BCR’s explanation of the planting shift, not evidence that every producer faces the same costs or will make the same crop choice. The estimates describe aggregate intentions, which can change before planting is complete.

How much could weather change the outlook?
Weather can alter yields and therefore harvest volumes even after intended acreage is known. The BCR’s September 18 outlook cautioned: “De todas formas, los números de producción son tentativos, y lo que ocurra efectivamente con el clima será determinante de los rendimientos y, por tanto, del volumen de cosecha en el nuevo ciclo.” In English: “In any case, the production figures are tentative, and what actually happens with the weather will determine yields and, therefore, the harvest volume in the new cycle.”
For the 2026/27 crop year, the practical distinction is between a planting-area estimate and a production scenario based on yield assumptions. The corn figure of 67.5 million tonnes represents the BCR’s normal-condition horizon; approaching 70.5 million tonnes depends on favorable conditions. Neither is a final harvest tally.
