Argentina Corn Planting: What the Rain Forecasts Mean for 2025/26 and 2026/27

The 7.8 million-hectare figure was Argentina’s 2025/26 corn-area forecast, not a current estimate. The initial 2026/27 estimate was 8.4 million hectares.

Rainfall helped support a larger Argentine corn-area forecast for 2025/26, but the often-cited 7.8 million hectares was an estimate reported on August 20, 2025—not a current acreage figure. For 2026/27, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange’s initial estimate, reported in August 2026, was 8.4 million hectares, unchanged year over year.

What did the 2025/26 forecast say?

On August 20, 2025, Reuters reported that the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange expected Argentina to plant about 7.8 million hectares of corn in the 2025/26 season, 9.6% more than the prior season. The exchange described the estimate as potentially the country’s second-largest corn area, behind the 8.4 million hectares planted in 2023/24. These were forecasts and historical comparisons reported at that time, not a statement of current planting progress or final harvested area. Reuters, August 20, 2025.

What is the latest acreage estimate in the supplied outlook?

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange’s initial estimate for 2026/27 was 8.4 million hectares, unchanged from 2025/26, according to reporting in August 2026. That is a later season’s estimate and should not be confused with the 7.8-million-hectare 2025/26 forecast. Buenos Aires Herald, August 2026.

Separately, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service forecast 2026/27 Argentine corn production at 60.5 million metric tons and projected exports 3 million metric tons higher than in its prior outlook. Production and export forecasts describe expected supply and trade, not planted hectares; they are not directly interchangeable with the exchange’s area estimate. Why rain can encourage corn planting—and also disrupt it

In its August 2025 account, Reuters said abundant rains improved water conditions across much of Argentina’s agricultural heartland ahead of early planting. Better soil moisture can make planting more feasible after dry conditions and support farmers’ willingness to allocate land to corn. The rainfall context helped explain the exchange’s larger acreage expectation; it did not guarantee that all planned hectares would be planted.

There is a practical limit to the benefit. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service reporting said wet conditions and strong subsoil moisture supported acreage recovery in the 2025/26 outlook, but very wet soil and muddy roads hampered some planting. It also warned that continued rain could cause fields to be lost in flooded parts of northern Buenos Aires. Moisture helps only when fields can be reached and worked at the right time. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, 2025.

What could limit planting beyond weather?

Higher input costs

USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s 2026 annual assessment identified input costs as a counterweight to favorable moisture. In the report’s reference period, urea prices had risen by more than 50% since the beginning of 2026, diesel by 25–30%, and production costs per hectare by more than $150—roughly 30%—over the prior two to three months. These are dated report figures, not current October 2026 prices. The agency said corn is more exposed than soybeans to rising input costs because it requires more fertilizer. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, 2026.

Corn stunt concerns

The same USDA assessment reported renewed detections of Dalbulus leafhoppers and associated corn stunt symptoms in northern regions. Farmers remained alert after the serious 2022/23 outbreak; the report discussed resistant hybrids and management, but said no significant acreage reduction was anticipated at that stage. That was an assessment in the report’s publication period, not a guarantee about later disease pressure or planting decisions.

How to read the acreage and weather outlooks

  • Check the season and date. The 7.8-million-hectare figure is the August 2025 forecast for 2025/26; 8.4 million hectares is the initial 2026/27 estimate reported in August 2026.
  • Keep measures distinct. Planted area, harvested area, commercial grain area and production are different measures. Exchange estimates and USDA marketing-year forecasts may also use different definitions.
  • Separate planting potential from progress. A seasonal moisture outlook or acreage estimate does not establish how much has actually been planted. The sources cited here do not establish the latest weekly planting progress or observed rainfall totals as of October 7, 2026.
  • Treat climate outlooks as probabilities, not guarantees. In a March 11, 2026 report, INTA discussed better moisture availability amid a probable transition toward El Niño. CIRN director Pablo Mercuri said: “Luego de la gran sequía acumulada de 2021 a 2024, estamos en una tendencia en la que recuperamos los valores promedios de agua, o incluso los podemos superar” (“After the great drought accumulated from 2021 to 2024, we are in a trend in which we are recovering average water values, or may even exceed them”). This is a broad seasonal outlook, not assurance that each corn-growing region receives timely rain. INTA, March 11, 2026.
