Arenillas, a village in Spain’s Soria province, was reported in April 2026 to be offering a rent-free restored home alongside a municipal bricklaying job and management of the village bar. The arrangement also requires a family with school-age children willing to live there permanently. It is not confirmed as an open vacancy: the report is from Indian Defence Review, and the municipal pages checked do not show a matching notice.

Is the free house in Arenillas still available?

There is no confirmed current vacancy in the available information. Indian Defence Review reported the offer on April 7, 2026, but the Ayuntamiento de Arenillas news listing retrieved for this account did not include an offer-specific notice. That absence does not prove the offer is closed; it means applicants should verify the status and obtain written terms directly from the council before making plans.

The council’s official contact page lists [email protected]. Ask whether applications are still being accepted, what the selection process is, and whether a home and job are actually available. The report said 116 applications arrived within a week of the announcement, but no official tally or later update was found; treat that number as historical reporting, not a current application count.

What does the reported offer include?

Indian Defence Review described a package involving a restored social-housing unit with no rent, bar and social-club management, and municipal bricklaying work for one adult. The family would need to include school-age children and commit to living in Arenillas permanently.

The report says six other restored units rent for about €100 per month, but that is not the rent for the proposed free unit. It identifies construction or bar-management experience, family composition, and willingness to adapt to rural life as selection considerations. It does not give a formal employment contract, salary, working hours, duration, housing agreement, or binding selection rules. Those details need to be established with the council in writing before anyone treats the arrangement as a job or housing commitment.

What is the “strange requirement”?

There is not just one unusual condition. As described in the report, the selected household must have school-age children, manage the village bar, and live in Arenillas permanently; one adult must also take the municipal bricklayer role. The bar is not presented as a stand-alone, guaranteed-income business. Indian Defence Review quotes local association member Rodrigo Gismera saying it “does not generate much income,” with free housing intended to offset that reality.

The broader context is rural depopulation. Indian Defence Review reported around 40 year-round residents in Arenillas, fewer than a dozen homes occupied through winter, and a larger seasonal population in summer. These are figures in that April 2026 report, not independently verified census statistics. Gismera told the publication: “At least the bleeding has been stopped,” he said. “Today, there are as many residents as there were 50 years ago.”

How would children get to school, and what is daily life like?

The report says Arenillas’s local school has been closed for about 30 years. Children are transported daily to school in Berlanga de Duero, roughly 20 kilometres away. It also describes public transport as very limited, basic medical consultations as available locally, and more serious care and most official procedures as requiring travel. Residents therefore need to plan for transport for ordinary errands and services; the report does not specify school-transport schedules or arrangements for a prospective family.

Can people from outside Spain apply?

According to Indian Defence Review, applicants from outside the European Union must already hold valid Spanish residence and work permits; the municipality will not arrange visas. This is the report’s account of the eligibility condition, not individualized immigration advice. Anyone considering the move should confirm the requirement with the council and check their specific status with an appropriate Spanish immigration authority or qualified adviser before relying on it.

What should a prospective applicant confirm?

Before relocating or resigning from existing work, get written answers from the Ayuntamiento on the points the report leaves open:

  • Whether the vacancy is open and how to submit an application.
  • Who qualifies as a household with school-age children, and how permanent residence is defined.
  • The bricklayer position’s employer, duties, pay, hours, contract length, and start date.
  • The bar’s operating responsibilities, income arrangements, expenses, and any required opening hours.
  • The rent-free home’s condition, occupancy terms, utilities, duration, and what happens if either role ends.
  • School transport, access to medical care, and practical transport options for the family.
  • Any residency and work-authorization documents required before selection.

The reported effort is part of Arenillas’s response to limited housing in a depopulating rural area. Gismera told Indian Defence Review that the town hall, residents, and association began renovating existing buildings as housing became scarce. That context explains why a free home is paired with services the village needs, but it does not replace a formal offer or establish the arrangement’s financial viability.
