Not necessarily—but an iPhone 18 Pro advertised as “free” is not automatically a $0 deal. In the U.S. as of October 7, 2026, Apple lists the 256GB model at $1,199, while carrier offers offset the phone price through monthly credits that depend on trade-in, plan, financing, and account eligibility. You may come out ahead if you would choose the required plan and stay long enough to collect the credits; otherwise, the plan premium, surrendered trade-in, fees, or early-exit costs can outweigh the discount.
What “free” means in an iPhone 18 Pro offer
Apple’s U.S. Store lists the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199. Its carrier offers can provide up to $1,200 in credits with an iPhone 14 or later trade-in in any condition, subject to eligibility and other terms. That “up to” amount is a maximum, not a promise that every customer receives the full phone price.
Credits are usually applied over time rather than deducted in full at checkout. The practical value therefore depends on whether you qualify, the required service plan, the trade-in you give up, and whether you keep the qualifying service for the credit period. Read the exact offer shown for your account before deciding.
Apple trade-in value and carrier credits are different
Apple describes two separate routes. Select carriers may offer up to $1,200 in promotional credits for an eligible iPhone 14 or later. Apple’s own direct Trade In program lists $175–$885 for iPhone 13 or later in the U.S.; the amount depends on the model, condition, and configuration. The direct trade-in value is not interchangeable with carrier bill credits.

For an outright-purchase comparison, use the amount you could actually receive through Apple Trade In or another realistic sale—not the maximum carrier promotion—as the value of the phone you surrender. Apple also offers a “Connect on your own later” purchase path. If comparing financing, note that Apple says an iPhone bought with Apple Card Monthly Installments is unlocked, subject to that route’s carrier conditions and eligibility.

AT&T: up to $1,200, with plan and financing conditions
AT&T’s offer advertises up to $1,200 off through 36 monthly credits. Its stated requirements include an iPhone 14 or newer trade-in (excluding iPhone 16e) in any condition, or a qualifying smartphone with at least $180 in trade-in value; financing at least $1,200; and Premium 2.0 service. AT&T lists Premium 2.0 at a minimum of $100 per month before taxes, fees, and discounts for this offer. Credits begin within three billing cycles.
AT&T says canceling service stops the credits and makes the remaining device balance due. For a new line, canceling service on other lines within 90 days can also stop credits. The carrier lists a $35 activation or upgrade charge and says offers may change. Check the current terms for your line and account.

T-Mobile: different promotions have different caps
T-Mobile’s official promotion listings include multiple iPhone offers beginning October 1, 2026. Selected new-service promotions list up to $1,000 in credits, while selected trade-in promotions list up to $800; each describes credits over as many as 36 months and has promotion-specific plan and eligibility conditions. Some entries also mention taxes or a $35 device connection charge.
Those are separate promotions: do not combine one offer’s maximum credit with another offer’s eligibility rules. Identify the promotion tied to your device and plan, then review its complete terms, including any balance or credit treatment if you leave early.

Calculate whether the offer is cheaper for you
Compare each path over the same period and for service that meets the same needs. The relevant plan cost is usually the extra amount you would pay for the promotion’s required plan compared with the service you would otherwise choose—not automatically the entire bill, if you would keep that plan anyway.
Use this framework:
- Carrier-offer total: phone payments remaining after credits, plus the required plan’s incremental cost over the credit period, taxes and fees, activation or connection charges, the value of the trade-in you give up, and any payoff caused by leaving early.
- Outright-purchase total: the phone price after any direct trade-in, plus taxes, the cost of your chosen service over the same period, and associated fees.
Use your actual checkout figures for taxes, fees, monthly plan prices, trade-in value, and credits. If you may leave before the credits end, model that separately: AT&T explicitly says credits stop and the remaining device balance is due when service is canceled. Do not assume another carrier applies the same early-exit terms; check the exact offer.
Questions to answer before accepting
- What credit amount does this specific promotion show for my device, trade-in, plan, and account?
- How much more would the required plan cost than the service I would otherwise buy over the full credit term?
- What could I realistically get for my trade-in through a direct trade-in or sale?
- What taxes, activation or connection charges, and other fees are due upfront or during the term?
- What happens to remaining credits and the phone balance if I cancel, switch service, or upgrade early?
- Does the purchase route leave the phone unlocked, and does that matter for my plans?
Apple’s lease is not a subsidized-phone purchase
Apple’s Klarna consumer lease is a separate option, not a purchase or loan. Apple lists typical U.S. iPhone 18 Pro payments of $49.99–$100.03 per month for a 12-month lease and $34.99–$70.01 per month for a 24-month lease, excluding taxes and trade-in credit. The lease requires an eligible carrier, and Apple warns that terminating before the end of the term may bring a substantial charge. Compare the full payment stream and end-of-term conditions, not just the monthly amount, with a carrier-credit offer or outright purchase.
So, are you overpaying?
You cannot tell from the word “free” or the advertised maximum alone. The offer may be worthwhile if you qualify for the credits, already want the required plan, are comfortable giving up the trade-in, and expect to stay through the credit term. Buying outright and choosing service independently may cost less if the plan premium or lost flexibility outweighs the credits. Since your account-specific plan cost, trade-in value, taxes, fees, and expected time with the carrier determine the result, compare those figures at checkout before committing.
