In a draw-based lottery, a Quick Pick and a line you choose yourself have the same chance of matching the draw, provided both are valid entries in the same game.
What a Quick Pick changes—and what it does not
A Quick Pick is a way to select lottery numbers: the lottery system generates the line instead of you choosing it. It changes how you get your numbers, not the probability that a valid combination will be drawn. Loto-Québec puts it plainly: “Every combination of a draw-based lottery game has the same odds of being drawn.” Loto-Québec’s Wise Play explanation says the odds are the same whether players select numbers themselves or use Quick Pick.
- Quick Pick: convenient when you do not want to choose a line.
- Self-selected numbers: lets you choose the line, but does not make it more likely to win.
Why the odds are the same
In a fair draw where every valid combination is equally likely, the method used to select a line cannot change the chance that the combination is drawn. A Quick Pick is not a prediction, and choosing birthdays, patterns, or numbers that have appeared often does not make a line more likely in the next independent draw.
The Irish National Lottery explains that previous draws do not make a number more or less likely to appear in a later draw. A number’s past frequency therefore does not give it an advantage in a future independent draw. Its odds guidance also emphasizes that the odds depend on each game’s rules.

Lottery odds depend on the game and prize
There is no single set of odds for “the lottery.” Each game has its own number pool, rules, and prize tiers, so compare the official odds for the specific game and prize you mean. For example, Loto-Québec lists the odds of winning the Lotto 6/49 Classic Jackpot as one in 13,983,816; the cited page does not state a publication year. That figure applies to that named jackpot, not to every lottery or every prize tier.
Does choosing your own numbers offer any advantage?
Not for the chance of matching a particular valid combination in a given draw. Pick your own numbers if you prefer choosing them; use Quick Pick if you prefer convenience. Neither method is a strategy for beating the draw, and past results do not turn a number-selection method into a reliable way to earn money or plan your finances.
