Sony has said adoption of higher-tier PlayStation Plus memberships increased, but its latest reported figure of 125 million is for active PlayStation accounts—not paid PS Plus subscribers. Sony’s public statements support a qualitative claim about tier adoption, not a quantified recovery in the service’s total subscriber count.
What Sony’s latest numbers show
In its presentation for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Sony said PlayStation had 125 million monthly active users (MAU) in June, up 2% year over year and a record for that month. Sony defines MAU as an estimated number of unique accounts that played games or used online services on PlayStation during the last month of the quarter. The figure is based on company research and may be updated. Sony’s FY2026 Q1 presentation and SIE’s business-data page identify the number as an estimate; the latter gives the date as June 30, 2026.

That is a measure of activity across PlayStation, not a count of people paying for PlayStation Plus. An account can be active without being a PS Plus subscriber, and the MAU figure does not say how many accounts have a paid membership.
Has Sony said PlayStation Plus adoption is increasing?
Yes, but the statement is narrower than a claim that total subscriber numbers have recovered. In its report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Sony described PS Plus as a “proven and profitable online game subscription service” and said curated experiences and features had led to “increased adoption of higher-tier memberships.” Sony’s 2025 corporate report does not give a percentage increase or a current total subscriber count alongside that statement.

Higher-tier adoption concerns the mix of memberships, not necessarily the total number of subscribers. Without a published subscriber series, the statement cannot establish whether total paid membership rose, fell, or returned to an earlier level.
Why the 125 million figure is not a PS Plus subscriber count
MAU and subscription membership answer different questions. MAU estimates how many unique accounts used PlayStation during a specified period. A PS Plus subscriber total would count memberships under Sony’s reporting definition. Sony’s June 2026 MAU figure is therefore evidence of broad platform activity, but it cannot be used as a stand-in for the number of paid PS Plus members.

How the earlier Sony figure compares
Sony’s FY2025 annual results reported 125 million PlayStation MAUs in March 2025, up 1% year over year and a Q4 record. That, too, is a platform activity measure—not a PS Plus subscriber total. Sony’s FY2025 results presentation also cited increased network-services sales, but that broader category does not establish a PS Plus subscriber count.
| Reported figure or claim | Measure | Period and comparison | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 125 million | PlayStation MAUs | June 2026; up 2% year over year | Estimated platform activity, not PS Plus membership |
| 125 million | PlayStation MAUs | March 2025; up 1% year over year | Estimated platform activity, not PS Plus membership |
| Increased adoption of higher-tier memberships | PS Plus tier adoption | Sony’s corporate report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025; no percentage stated | A qualitative statement about higher-tier adoption, not the total subscriber trend |
Does Sony currently publish a PS Plus subscriber total?
The current materials cited here do not provide a latest PS Plus subscriber total. Sony’s FY2026 Q1 materials discussed MAU and platform engagement, while its business-data page showed MAU and software sales. Those sources do not establish that Sony has stopped publishing a subscriber count elsewhere; they simply do not answer the question with a current total. Sony’s earnings archive lists its FY2025 Q1 announcement on August 7, 2025.

For now, the accurate reading is that Sony has reported growth in PlayStation activity and described increased adoption of higher PS Plus tiers, but the sources cited here do not quantify a recovery in total paid PS Plus subscribers.
