In the United States, an online-only bank is not inherently less safe than a branch-based bank when it comes to deposit insurance. The key questions are whether the institution holding your money is FDIC-insured, whether your account is an insured deposit, and how your balances fit within the coverage rules. That protection addresses an insured bank’s failure—not fraud, account-access problems, or losses on investments. Before switching, verify the bank and account, compare the practical terms and services, and move payments in stages.
What “safe” means when you choose a bank
“Safer” can mean several different things: protection if a bank fails, protection against unauthorized activity, reliable access to money, or help resolving a problem. Those are related but separate concerns. The official guidance available does not establish that online-only banks are safer or less safe overall than branch-based banks. It does establish that eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank receive the same kind of FDIC deposit-insurance treatment regardless of whether customers bank online or visit branches. The FDIC’s digital-banking guidance explains the format distinction; its deposit-insurance guidance explains coverage.

That distinction matters because insurance and day-to-day service answer different questions. A branch may offer in-person teller service or help with a task that requires a physical location. An online-only institution may rely on digital support and may not accept cash deposits. Neither fact, by itself, establishes stronger deposit protection or better cybersecurity. Evaluate the specific bank, account, and services you would use rather than treating “online” or “traditional” as a safety rating.

FDIC deposit insurance protects qualifying deposits if an FDIC-insured bank fails, subject to applicable coverage rules. It is not a blanket guarantee that every product in a bank’s app or website is insured, that every transaction is risk-free, or that you can never be locked out of an account. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and crypto assets are examples of non-deposit investments that are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance. Safe-deposit box contents are not deposits either. The FDIC’s explanation of deposit insurance describes the protection and its limits.

How to verify the bank and the account
Start by identifying the legal institution that actually holds the money. A familiar app or financial-technology company may be a nonbank, not the bank itself. A nonbank company is not FDIC-insured simply because its app displays banking services or mentions FDIC insurance. If it says funds are placed with a partner bank, find out which bank, how funds are held and credited, and what the account agreement says about the arrangement. The FDIC’s guidance on banking through third-party apps and guidance on banking apps explain why the app and the insured bank should not be assumed to be the same entity.
- Find the institution’s exact name. Check the account agreement and disclosures, not just the app’s brand name or a statement that funds are “banked” or “protected.” If a partner bank is involved, ask for its legal name and how your funds are placed there.
- Verify the bank independently. Use the FDIC’s BankFind tool to search for the institution. Type a known, correct web address yourself rather than following an unexpected message or ad; scammers may impersonate banks or misuse FDIC language and logos. See the FDIC’s guidance on fake banks and scams.
- Confirm the specific product is a deposit account. Do not assume that a balance displayed beside a bank account is an insured deposit. Check the product name and agreement. Brokerage, investment, and other non-deposit products have different protections.
- Check the insurance system if considering a credit union. Credit unions are not covered by FDIC insurance. The CFPB directs consumers to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for the credit-union insurance system and institution lookup. Treat that as a separate verification, not as FDIC coverage.
When an app uses a partner bank, do not rely solely on a logo or a short marketing statement. Read the provider’s agreement and disclosures and ask how and when funds are deposited and credited. If you cannot determine which bank holds the funds, or what account structure applies, get that information before moving money.

Understand the $250,000 limit before moving balances
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per account ownership category. The limit is not simply $250,000 for every account number. Accounts in the same ownership category at the same insured bank may be added together when coverage is calculated. Different ownership categories may qualify for separate coverage under the applicable rules, but the result depends on the specific ownership and account details.
If you have multiple accounts, co-owners, beneficiaries, a trust, business funds, or a third-party arrangement, do not guess at the total. Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) to examine a personal situation, or contact the FDIC for help with a specific coverage question. Review the FDIC’s coverage explanation alongside your account documents. A balance below the standard limit in one account does not automatically settle coverage for all of your deposits across accounts or institutions.

Compare the services you will actually need
Once you have verified the institution and account, compare the practical experience against your own habits. A branch-based bank may be useful if you regularly need a teller or another service offered at a physical location. An online-only bank may suit someone who handles routine tasks digitally, but you should confirm its cash-deposit options, ATM arrangements, support channels, and transfer rules before relying on it. Features vary by institution; the format label is not a substitute for checking the specific account.
| What to compare | Questions to answer before switching | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bank and insurance status | What legal bank holds the money? Is it FDIC-insured? Is the product an insured deposit account? | Insurance depends on the insured institution, account type, and ownership structure—not on whether the bank has branches. |
| Fees and account terms | What are the monthly maintenance, overdraft, ATM, wire, and other relevant transaction fees? Are there minimum-balance rules? | A low advertised cost may depend on conditions or omit charges relevant to how you use the account. |
| Rate and offer conditions | What rate applies, what balance is required, and when does a promotional rate expire? | A short-term offer may not represent the account’s ongoing terms. The FDIC advises consumers not to make a decision solely on a temporary promotion. |
| Cash and payments | Can you deposit cash? Which ATMs are available, and what charges apply? What are the check-deposit, bill-pay, transfer, and payment limits? | These details affect whether the account can handle your regular income and expenses without extra steps. |
| Support and problem handling | What are the support hours and contact methods? Is an in-person option available? What process does the institution specify for reporting errors, fraud, or access problems? | Choose support arrangements you can use if a payment is delayed or you cannot access the account. |
| App or fintech relationship | If a nonbank app is involved, which bank holds the funds, how are they deposited and credited, and what does the agreement disclose? | The app’s brand is not necessarily the insured bank, and coverage depends on the actual account arrangement. |
Read the deposit agreement, fee schedule, and product disclosures rather than relying on a comparison page or headline rate. The FDIC recommends weighing costs and benefits instead of choosing solely for a short-term offer; the OCC advises reviewing account agreements and asking the bank about terms such as overdraft protection. See the FDIC’s account-switching guidance and the OCC’s depository-services guidance.

Protect access to your account
Deposit insurance does not prevent someone from stealing credentials, tricking you into authorizing a payment, or exploiting an insecure device. The FDIC customer cybersecurity guide recommends using strong credentials, keeping protective software current, and using a trusted, secure connection for banking. Use the bank’s genuine website or official app, and do not disclose credentials in response to unexpected calls or messages. These are customer-side precautions; they do not demonstrate that one banking format has better cybersecurity than another. For more detail, consult the FDIC’s Cybersecurity Guide for Financial Institution Customers.
Switch accounts in stages to avoid missed payments
Moving your banking relationship is an operational change as well as a choice of account. A careful overlap helps prevent a direct deposit from going to a closed account or an automatic payment from triggering a fee. The FDIC recommends contacting customer-service representatives at both institutions to understand timing and avoid unnecessary hassles.

- Open the new account and confirm access. Complete any required verification and make sure you can sign in and use the account before changing where income or bills go.
- Check transfer and account terms. Ask both institutions about transfer timing, limits, fees, and any requirements that could affect the move. Review the new account’s fee schedule and disclosures.
- Redirect income and recurring payments. Update direct deposit with your employer or other payer. Change recurring withdrawals with each biller. If you use the old bank’s bill-pay service, cancel those payments there and enroll them through the new bank as appropriate; the FDIC specifically calls out this step in its switching guidance.
- Allow outstanding activity to clear. Check for pending checks, card transactions, transfers, and scheduled automatic debits. Keep enough money in the old account to cover unsettled items and remaining payments.
- Confirm the new arrangement works. Check that deposits arrive and recurring bills are paid as intended. Ask the old institution whether closing the account has a fee or other consequence, then close it when remaining activity is resolved.
The FDIC’s March 2024 page, last updated March 1, 2024, puts the offer question plainly: “Do not let short-term promotional offers be the only factor in your decision making.” Its bank-switching guide also recommends speaking with representatives at both institutions to clarify timing and possible fees.
Make the decision account by account
For each candidate, record the legal institution, the account type, insurance status, your expected total balance in each ownership category, recurring fees, rate conditions, cash and ATM access, support options, and transfer procedures. If an app or fintech is involved, include the partner-bank arrangement and read its disclosures. Then compare those details with the services you actually need; no general online-versus-branch ranking can replace that check.
Bank status, rates, fees, partner arrangements, and account terms can change. Verify current information directly with the institution before opening an account or transferring funds. If a bank cannot clearly identify who holds your deposit or explain applicable terms, pause the switch until you have a reliable answer.
