Are Old TVs Worth Money? How to Value a Vintage Set

Rare early and well-preserved televisions may attract collectors, but many later CRTs have little resale value. Learn how to identify a set, check sales and choose what to do with it.

Some old TVs are valuable, but age alone is no guarantee: rare early sets and well-preserved examples attract the most interest, while many later CRT televisions are worth little. Identify the exact model, check its condition and completeness, then compare recent completed sales before deciding whether to sell, repair, donate or recycle it.

Which old TVs are most likely to be valuable?

Collectible value tends to be concentrated in early mechanical and prewar electronic televisions, rare early-color models, unusual designs and sets from recognized manufacturers. Rarity, cabinet condition and the state of the picture tube all matter. A common later CRT is usually a very different proposition from a rare early set.

Early Television’s price guide offers historical examples, not guaranteed current sale prices: it says the RCA CT-100, described as the most common 15-inch set, sells for around $4,000 with a good CRT; a typical 1965 set sells for under $100; and rare prewar sets can reach several thousand dollars or more. Actual value depends on the specific set and current buyer demand.

What affects a vintage TV’s value?

Condition and completeness

An intact original cabinet, working CRT, complete controls and clean cosmetics can make a set more attractive than a damaged or incomplete one. Restoration quality also matters. Early Television notes that a mint cabinet can bring twice the value of a poor one; treat that as a guide’s comparison, not a universal pricing rule.

Identification, rarity and provenance

Record the brand and exact model number, along with the serial number, screen size, cabinet materials, dimensions and any chassis or year clues. Original paperwork, accessories and credible ownership history can help establish what the set is and why it may be significant. Unusual, prototype, prewar or documented historically important sets warrant more careful valuation than an unidentified common model.

How to estimate what your TV is worth

  1. Document the set. Photograph the front, rear identification label, controls, CRT face and cabinet, including any damage. Note whether it is tested, untested or nonworking. Do not power up a visibly damaged set.
  2. Find a specialist reference. Search the exact model in a guide such as the Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide, which Early Television identifies as available from Amazon and other booksellers. Use guide prices as reference points, not as promises of what a buyer will pay.
  3. Compare completed sales. Look for transactions involving the same model and similar condition, preferably in your area. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive; completed sales are stronger evidence of what buyers actually paid.
  4. Get expert help for an exceptional set. For a rare, prewar, prototype, celebrity-owned or museum-quality television, contact a qualified appraiser or specialist auction gallery. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute cautions that fixed values are difficult to establish for individual collectibles and directs owners toward dealers, professional appraisers and auction galleries for prevailing values.

Should you sell, repair, donate or recycle it?

Compare the likely net proceeds after any repair and transport costs with the set’s significance, condition, local demand and the time and effort involved. The best route depends on those factors:

Option When it may make sense What to consider
Sell The set is collectible, complete or likely to interest a local buyer. Describe testing status and defects honestly. Local pickup is generally more practical than shipping a heavy CRT.
Repair The set has historical or enthusiast interest and repair costs are reasonable relative to its likely value. On a common set, repair costs can exceed resale value. Get an estimate before committing.
Donate A museum, historical group or other recipient has confirmed interest and can accept the set. Check that the recipient can handle its size, condition and transport needs before arranging a drop-off.
Recycle The set is not economically repairable or saleable, and no suitable recipient wants it. Use an authorized electronics recycler and follow local requirements for CRT handling.

How to dispose of a low-value CRT safely

A television that has little resale value still needs responsible handling. CRT funnel glass generally contains lead, so recycling and disposal are subject to applicable requirements. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency encourages repair and reuse where practical and advises following federal and state requirements for CRTs. Check your local rules and use an authorized recycler rather than placing the set in ordinary trash.

Recycling arrangements differ by location. In California, CalRecycle says the standard statewide combined recovery and recycling payment rate for covered CRT electronic waste remains $1.19 per pound. That is a program payment mechanism for approved participants—not a guaranteed cash offer to a household—so contact a local program or recycler to learn what service is available to you.
