Re:

Are Old Kodak Brownie Cameras Worth Anything? How to Identify and Value One

Many old Kodak Brownies have modest resale value. Identify the exact model, check its condition and compare similar completed sales before estimating a price.

Yes—old Kodak Brownie cameras can have resale value, but many common examples sell for modest amounts. A MarketplaceIQ snapshot of recent eBay sold listings reported a $15 median and a $6–$35 range across common-to-mint-with-box variants on October 4, 2026. That is broad context, not an appraisal of any particular camera. Identify the exact model and compare completed sales in similar condition before estimating yours.

Why there is no single price for an old Brownie

Brownie is a family of Kodak cameras made across many decades, not one model. The models differ in design, production period, and film format, so a price attached to one Brownie should not be applied automatically to another. Kodak’s historical model table provides a starting point for distinguishing models and their original-era details: Kodak camera history.

Historical launch prices help explain the Brownie’s original appeal, but they are not current resale values. The Science Museum Group says the original Brownie was introduced in 1900 at $1. That was an inexpensive mass-market price for its time, not evidence that a surviving camera is worth $1—or any particular amount today. Science Museum Group: No. 1 Brownie Model B

Identify the model before estimating value

Look for a model name or number on the camera body, lens board, or other markings, and confirm it against a reliable historical reference. Two museum-documented examples illustrate why the details matter:

Do not assume that every Brownie takes the same film. Check the markings and model-specific documentation before buying film or describing the camera as usable.

What the available sale figures do—and do not—show

MarketplaceIQ reported 241 recent eBay sales in its October 4, 2026 snapshot, with a $15 median and a $6–$35 range for a broad group of common-to-mint-with-box variants. Its listed October 2 examples sold for $6, $8, $13, $19, $25, and $29. These figures offer a rough reference for common examples, but the broad grouping is not a model-by-model appraisal or a complete census of the market. MarketplaceIQ

Auction results also need context. Jackson’s International Auctioneers reported $344 realized against a $25–50 estimate for an 11-camera mixed lot in 2021 that included three Brownie models. Because the lot also contained cameras of other makes and models, that result cannot establish an individual Brownie’s value or be divided into a per-camera price. Keep completed-sale prices separate from asking prices and auction estimates. Museum records establish useful historical and technical details, but they do not establish current resale prices.

How to estimate your Brownie’s resale value

  1. Record the exact model. Transcribe visible names and numbers, then confirm the identification with a model-specific reference. If you cannot identify it confidently, do not rely on a comparable for a different Brownie.
  2. Describe its condition and completeness. Note the state of the body covering, lens, viewfinder, and any visible corrosion or damage. Record whether the shutter responds, but call the camera working only if it has actually been tested. Include the box, instructions, case, and accessories in your description.
  3. Find comparable completed sales. Prioritize the same model in similar cosmetic condition, with similar completeness and tested status. A current asking price shows what a seller hopes to receive, not what a buyer paid.
  4. Compare like with like. Keep individual-camera sales separate from mixed lots, and do not treat an estimate as a realized sale. Use the $15 median only as broad context for common examples, not as a quote for your camera.

When an unusual Brownie may warrant more research

If your camera is an uncommon model or part of a larger collection, look for model-specific completed sales and clearly documented auction results rather than relying on the broad marketplace range. A mixed-lot result can show that a group attracted substantial bidding, but it does not reveal what any one Brownie contributed. The available figures do not establish a universal premium for a box, case, or other original material; compare listings with the same contents before drawing that conclusion.
