No—not in Freddie Mac’s latest weekly national survey. Its October 8, 2026, survey put the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 7.40%, up from 7.28% the previous week. The average 15-year fixed rate also rose, to 6.73% from 6.60%. Those figures do not support describing the weekly benchmarks as being at two-week lows.
What Freddie Mac’s latest weekly survey shows
Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey reported these averages as of October 8, 2026:

- 30-year fixed: 7.40%, compared with 7.28% one week earlier.
- 15-year fixed: 6.73%, compared with 6.60% one week earlier.
The recent 30-year sequence in Freddie Mac’s survey archive is 7.03% on September 24, 7.28% on October 1, and 7.40% on October 8. Each weekly reading was higher than the one before it. The 15-year and 30-year figures are averages for different loan terms, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

These are Freddie Mac survey averages, not guaranteed lender offers or a borrower’s locked rate. Freddie Mac says its survey focuses on conventional, conforming, fully amortizing home-purchase loans for borrowers with excellent credit who put 20% down. A borrower with a different credit profile, down payment, loan type, or other loan details may receive a different quote.

The figures above are weekly benchmarks. Daily lender rate sheets and other daily measures can move differently, and the October 8 weekly survey alone cannot establish whether a reliable daily measure showed a two-week low on October 9. Without a dated daily series, that separate claim is unverified.
How to compare mortgage quotes
A national average can provide context, but shopping requires comparing offers for your own circumstances. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater advises borrowers to shop around and get multiple quotes, noting that doing so can potentially save thousands over a loan’s lifetime. - the same loan term, such as 15-year or 30-year fixed;

- the borrower and credit assumptions used for each quote;
- points and fees, as well as the quoted interest rate; and
- the rate-lock period and the date of each quote.
A lower advertised rate is not automatically the less expensive offer if it comes with different points, fees, or lock terms. Compare the details, not just the headline percentage.
