That historical association does not establish that iPhone owners today are richer: newer data reviewed here track smartphone ownership across all platforms, not iPhone versus Android.
What the iPhone-specific evidence found
Pew Research Center reported in 2013 that 49% of cell owners in U.S. households earning $150,000 or more said their phone was an iPhone. Pew also described iPhone ownership as more common among cell owners at the upper end of the income and education spectrum. This is a survey finding from 2013, not a current estimate. The finding describes a group-level association. It does not show that every iPhone owner has a high income, that Android owners earn less, or that choosing an iPhone causes someone to earn more.
What newer smartphone data can—and cannot—tell us
Pew Research Center’s 2025 U.S. survey found that smartphone ownership overall was 82% among adults in households earning under $30,000 and 97% among adults in households earning $100,000 or more. Those figures combine smartphone platforms; they are not iPhone ownership rates and do not show the income distribution of iPhone or Android owners.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
The survey included 5,022 U.S. adults and was conducted from February 5 to June 18, 2025. Pew reports an overall margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points. Its published income figures provide useful context about smartphone access, but they cannot establish whether the 2013 iPhone-specific pattern continues. Pew Research Center’s 2025 technology survey.
Pew’s survey methods also changed over time: phone polling was used through 2021, web and mail in 2023, and web, mail, and phone in 2024 and 2025. That context matters when interpreting trends across years.

Income is not the same as wealth
The Pew findings concern household income, not owners’ net worth. Income measures money received over a period; wealth generally refers to assets minus liabilities. A household’s income bracket therefore cannot tell you what its members own, owe, or have accumulated.
The U.S. Census Bureau describes the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) as a nationally representative longitudinal survey and a source of income and wealth information. The reviewed SIPP overview does not provide a phone-platform measure or compare wealth by iPhone ownership. Census Bureau overview of SIPP.

What you can reasonably conclude
- In Pew’s 2013 U.S. survey, cell owners in the highest reported household-income category were more likely to say they had an iPhone; 49% of those in households earning $150,000 or more did so.
- Pew’s 2025 figures show higher overall smartphone ownership among adults in higher-income households, but do not break that result down by iPhone and Android.
- Neither survey establishes that iPhone owners today are richer, or that an individual’s phone reveals their income or wealth.
A current, transparent U.S. comparison of iPhone and Android ownership by household income would be needed to determine whether the 2013 platform-specific association persists. The reviewed 2025 Pew results do not provide that comparison.
