Re:

Are Extended Appliance Warranties Worth It In 2026?

Most extended appliance warranties are poor value, but expensive built-in appliances and costly repairs can change the calculation. Here is how to compare the contract, fees, exclusions, and alternatives in 2026.

Usually, no. For most ordinary refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, and microwaves, an extended appliance warranty costs more than it returns. The better default is to compare the contract with the included manufacturer warranty and put the quoted plan price into a repair fund.

A plan can still be worthwhile when the appliance is expensive, built in, difficult to replace, unusually complex, or a major repair would create a serious financial problem. In 2026, the important question is not whether the salesperson calls it a “warranty.” It is whether the written service contract offers enough additional, usable protection to justify its premium, fees, exclusions, and claim limits.

What an extended appliance warranty really is

An extended warranty is generally an optional service contract. The manufacturer’s warranty is normally included in the appliance’s purchase price and usually covers defects in materials or workmanship for a stated period. An extended plan is purchased separately and may be administered by the manufacturer, retailer, insurer, or an independent protection-plan company.

That distinction matters. The retailer on your receipt may not be the company responsible for approving a claim. Before paying, identify the contract’s legal obligor and administrator, then read the actual terms—not just the summary printed beside the appliance.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends comparing the plan’s price, deductibles, service fees, exclusions, reimbursement limits, maintenance requirements, shipping costs, transfer rules, and claims process. The FTC also cautions that a plan may not be worthwhile if the appliance is unlikely to need repairs or the plan adds little to the original warranty.

Start with the manufacturer’s warranty

Read the warranty for the exact model before considering extra coverage. It may cover parts and labor for one year, provide longer coverage for selected components, or impose different terms for sealed refrigeration systems, motors, electronic controls, or other parts.

Common exclusions include:

  • Accidental or cosmetic damage
  • Improper installation or connection to the wrong electrical, gas, plumbing, or venting system
  • Misuse, commercial use, or failure to follow maintenance instructions
  • Consumable items and normal wear
  • Food spoilage, laundry expenses, or other consequential losses
  • Damage caused by some power events or external causes

Save the warranty, receipt, model number, serial number, installation invoice, and delivery records. Those documents can be required for either a manufacturer claim or a service-contract claim.

Do not assume a “five-year warranty” means five years after the original warranty

Plan names are easy to misread. A five-year protection plan may run from the purchase, delivery, or installation date. In that case, part of the plan overlaps the manufacturer’s coverage, although some benefits may begin immediately and full repair coverage may begin only after the original warranty ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, Lowe’s current major-appliance materials describe parts-and-labor coverage for covered breakdowns as generally beginning after the manufacturer’s warranty, while certain other benefits begin earlier. The contract controls the result.

Ask this precise question before buying:

“On what date does repair-and-labor coverage begin, and on what date does it end?”

Do not accept “five years total” as an answer if what you want is five years of coverage after the manufacturer’s warranty.

What major retailers currently offer

Retailer plans change, and terms can vary by state, product, administrator, and purchase price. These examples illustrate why comparing the contract is more useful than comparing plan names.

Retailer or plan type Relevant 2026 detail What it means for the buyer
Costco Qualifying major appliances generally receive a two-year warranty arrangement, with warranty assistance through Costco Technical & Warranty Services. Major appliances also have a 90-day return period. An additional plan is less attractive during the first two years unless it adds a benefit you genuinely need.
Best Buy Protection Major-appliance plans may include in-home service, repair or replacement, up to two covered claims every 12 months outside the manufacturer-warranty period, and eligible food-loss or power-surge benefits. Service fees can reach $99 for appliances priced at $1,000 or more. Calculate the premium plus the service fee. Accidental damage is not automatically included.
Best Buy Total membership The membership currently costs $199.99 per year and can provide up to 24 months of protection on eligible purchases while the membership remains active. It may work for several expensive purchases, but it is poor value if purchased for one inexpensive appliance. Canceling the membership can cancel remaining protection.
Lowe’s Three- and five-year plans may include breakdown, surge, food-loss, reinstallation, and other benefits. Lowe’s also advertises a multi-appliance plan at $37 per month plus tax. The multi-appliance price equals $444 per year before tax. That is difficult to justify for one new appliance.
Home Depot Three- and five-year plans administered through Allstate Protection Plans have prices tied to appliance price bands. Listed five-year plans range from approximately $40 to $595. Compare the premium with the appliance’s realistic repair and replacement value, not just the monthly or displayed price.

Benefits such as food-loss reimbursement, reinstallation, “no lemon” provisions, or replacement cards can be valuable. They also commonly have deadlines, documentation rules, claim limits, depreciation provisions, or product restrictions.

The break-even test

Use this basic formula:

Expected value of the plan = probability of a covered failure × covered repair or replacement value − premiums − claim fees − uncovered costs

You will not know the exact probability that your appliance will fail. You can still make a practical decision by filling in the contract’s numbers:

  1. Plan price: $_____
  2. Coverage after the manufacturer warranty: _____ years
  3. Service fee or deductible per claim: $_____
  4. Likely major repair: $_____
  5. Maximum payout or replacement value: $_____
  6. Maximum claims: _____
  7. Your ability to pay a surprise repair: low, medium, or high

Suppose a dishwasher costs $900, the plan costs $180, and a covered service call costs $49. A single covered repair costing $250 would produce only $201 of net benefit after the plan price and service fee. The plan would be financially ahead only if another covered failure occurred, the appliance were replaced under the contract, or the plan’s additional benefits had meaningful value.

That is not a prediction that the dishwasher will fail—or that the plan will lose money. It shows the threshold the contract must clear.

Which appliances are better candidates?

Refrigerators

Refrigerators can justify closer consideration because a failure can spoil food and premium or built-in models can be expensive to replace. Sealed-system, compressor, control-board, and ice-making repairs can also be costly.

Check whether the plan covers food spoilage and under what conditions. Food-loss reimbursement may require a covered mechanical failure, photographs, receipts, an inventory, or a claim filed within a specified period. Spoilage caused by a power outage may be excluded. A plan that advertises “food protection” is not the same as one that pays for every spoiled grocery item.

High-end built-in appliances

An extended plan is more plausible for a built-in refrigerator, wall oven, premium range, or specialty appliance when removal, delivery, cabinetry changes, and reinstallation would be expensive. The contract should specifically address those costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also find out whether the remedy is a repair, store credit, replacement card, or cash reimbursement. A replacement card may not cover installation or the cost of modifying the surrounding cabinets. For some premium brands, parts availability may be limited. Best Buy says its terms may allow replacement or reimbursement rather than continued repair efforts for certain brands, including Viking, Wolf, Thermador, Sub-Zero, Miele, and JennAir.

Washers and dishwashers

These appliances can have meaningful repair bills, but a plan costing several hundred dollars may require multiple claims to break even. ConsumerAffairs’ 2025 estimates put typical dishwasher repairs around $160 to $300 and washing-machine repairs around $150 to $500, including parts and labor. Local labor rates, the model, diagnosis, and part availability can change those figures substantially.

Ask whether the plan covers diagnosis, labor, water damage caused by the failure, haul-away, and reinstallation. A plan that covers only the failed part may leave you with a substantial service bill.

Dryers, microwaves, and inexpensive appliances

Self-insuring is usually stronger when the appliance costs only a few hundred dollars and can be replaced easily. Compare the total plan cost with the replacement price. If a plan costs $120 on a $300 microwave and still charges a service fee, replacing the microwave after a failure may be the simpler financial choice.

Reliability and service availability matter more than a famous brand

Do not base the decision on a broad claim that every modern appliance is unreliable—or that a familiar brand never fails. Reliability varies by category, model, design, and component.

Consumer Reports updated its appliance reliability rankings in February 2026 using member survey data and predicted reliability by category. J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability and Service Study analyzed 12,755 appliance reliability responses and 1,419 service responses. The results differed by category; for example, KitchenAid ranked highest for dishwasher reliability and GE ranked highest for French-door refrigerator reliability in that study.

Use these sources to compare models, not to guarantee that one appliance will fail or survive. Also check whether an authorized technician serves your area. A theoretically valuable plan is less useful if the provider cannot find a technician, requires repeated diagnosis visits, or takes weeks to obtain parts.

Failure modes that make plans less valuable

Overlapping coverage

If the plan overlaps almost entirely with the manufacturer warranty, you are paying for protection you already have. Look for the start date of parts-and-labor coverage, not merely the date the plan expires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High fees and claim limits

A service fee reduces the value of every claim. A limit of two claims per 12 months, a maximum payout, or a rule that one replacement ends coverage can materially change the calculation.

Replacement that is not equivalent

The provider may choose to repair, replace, reimburse, issue store credit, or provide a replacement card. The replacement may be refurbished, limited to the original purchase price, or subject to depreciation. It may not include delivery, installation, cabinetry work, or accessories.

Maintenance and installation exclusions

Incorrect leveling, plumbing, wiring, gas connections, venting, or installation can cause failures that the plan excludes. Keep installation paperwork and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. A plan may also require prior authorization before any technician works on the appliance.

“No lemon” language

A no-lemon clause normally activates only after a specified number of covered failures or repair attempts. It may not apply to unrelated failures, manufacturer-warranty claims, or visits where the technician cannot reproduce the problem. Read the trigger language.

ASURION 2 Year Major Appliance Protection Plan ($175 - $199.99)
  • No Additional Cost: You pay nothing for repairs – parts, labor, and shipping included.
  • Coverage: Plan starts on the date of purchase. Malfunctions covered after the manufacturer's warranty. Power surges covered from day one. Plan includes food loss reimbursement up to $250 per approved claim for refrigerators & freezers and laundry services reimbursement up to $25 per approved claim for washers & dryers that are out for service for more than seven (7) consecutive days.

Documentation and slow reimbursement

A claim may require the receipt, model and serial numbers, technician reports, maintenance records, photographs, food receipts, and proof that the loss resulted from a covered failure. Missing a 60- or 90-day filing deadline can eliminate a reimbursement claim.

Claims that sound convincing but are incomplete

  • “Every extended warranty is a scam.” Not necessarily. Service contracts are legitimate products, but their value depends on price, exclusions, service quality, and the appliance’s risk.
  • “The retailer has to fix it because I bought it there.” Usually not. The manufacturer or separate plan administrator may have the repair obligation.
  • “The plan covers accidental damage.” Only if the contract expressly says so. Standard major-appliance protection does not automatically include accidental damage.
  • “Homeowners insurance covers breakdowns.” Ordinary wear and mechanical breakdown are generally not covered. Homeowners policies more commonly cover damage from listed events such as fire, lightning, or theft, subject to the policy and deductible.
  • “An independent repair person voids the manufacturer warranty.” A manufacturer generally cannot require a particular service provider or branded part unless it provides that service or part free, although it can deny damage caused by an improper repair or part.

Questions to answer before paying

  1. Who is the legal obligor and who administers claims?
  2. When exactly does parts-and-labor coverage start and end?
  3. What overlaps the manufacturer warranty?
  4. Are diagnosis, labor, delivery, haul-away, and reinstallation covered?
  5. What service fee, deductible, or trip charge applies?
  6. How many claims are allowed?
  7. Is there a maximum payout or depreciation schedule?
  8. Does a replacement or store-credit payment end coverage?
  9. Are food spoilage, laundry expenses, power surges, and cosmetic parts included?
  10. What proof and filing deadlines apply?
  11. Who chooses the technician, and how long can repair take?
  12. Are refurbished parts or appliances permitted?
  13. Can you cancel, and how is any refund calculated?
  14. Is the plan transferable if you sell the appliance or home?

If the salesperson cannot provide the full terms before payment, skip the plan until you can review them.

When to skip the plan

  • The appliance is inexpensive and easy to replace.
  • The premium is close to—or greater than—the cost of one realistic repair.
  • The plan largely overlaps the included warranty.
  • The service fee is high or the payout cap is low.
  • You have an emergency fund that can absorb a repair.
  • You expect to move or replace the appliance before the plan ends.
  • Authorized service is poor in your area.

When buying may make sense

  • The appliance is a costly built-in or premium model.
  • A repair would create serious financial stress.
  • The model has expensive sealed-system, electronic, or specialty components.
  • Parts are difficult to obtain.
  • The plan provides valuable food-loss, reinstallation, surge, or replacement benefits.
  • The provider has dependable local service.
  • The premium plus fees is reasonable compared with one major repair.

FAQ

Are extended appliance warranties worth it in 2026?

Usually not for ordinary, inexpensive appliances. They are more defensible for costly built-in or premium appliances, models with expensive repairs, or households that cannot comfortably pay an unexpected repair bill.

Is an extended appliance warranty the same as a manufacturer warranty?

No. The manufacturer warranty is generally included with the appliance and covers specified defects for a stated period. An extended warranty is usually a separately purchased service contract with its own administrator, exclusions, fees, claim limits, and remedies.

Should I buy an appliance protection plan at Costco?

Check Costco’s current terms first. Qualifying major appliances generally receive two years of warranty coverage and warranty assistance, making an additional plan less attractive during that period unless it adds valuable benefits not already included.

Is it better to save the warranty money for repairs?

For many standard appliances, yes. Saving the quoted premium in a dedicated repair fund avoids overlapping coverage and lets you keep the money if the appliance does not fail. A service contract may still be worthwhile when predictable coverage has greater value than self-insuring.

The Bottom Line

The best default for 2026 is to skip the extended plan, choose a reliable appliance with strong manufacturer support, and save the premium for repairs. Consider buying only after confirming that the written contract begins when you need it, covers a realistic high-cost failure, has manageable fees and claim limits, and provides dependable local service. For a premium built-in appliance or a household with little financial room for error, the plan’s certainty may justify a lower expected-dollar return.
