Enterprise project management software is not just a shared task list. The right platform should help an organization decide which work to fund, assign scarce people, monitor delivery, control access, and report reliable information to executives.
For most cross-functional organizations, Smartsheet is the strongest overall choice because it combines familiar spreadsheet-style work management with portfolio rollups, standardized project templates, dashboards, and governance. But the best option depends heavily on the work itself: Jira is a better fit for software teams, Primavera P6 for construction and capital programs, Workfront for marketing operations, and Microsoft Planner for organizations already deeply invested in Microsoft 365.
Best enterprise project management software compared
| Best for | Software | Primary strength | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-functional enterprise work | Smartsheet | Portfolio rollups, standardized delivery, dashboards, and PMO governance | Advanced resource planning is a separate premium capability |
| Fast adoption across departments | Asana Enterprise | Approachable project, portfolio, workflow, and goal management | Not a replacement for construction-grade scheduling or deep cost engineering |
| Highly configurable work management | monday work management Enterprise | Flexible workflows, dashboards, portfolio tools, and capacity planning | Formal financial baselines and complex CPM scheduling need careful evaluation |
| Software and product organizations | Jira Premium or Enterprise with Plans | Multi-team planning, dependencies, capacity, velocity, and scenarios | Planning quality depends on accurate Jira data |
| Agile at very large scale | Jira Align | Strategy-to-delivery coordination across portfolios, programs, and value streams | It is a separate product from Jira Plans and is designed for larger organizations |
| Microsoft 365 organizations | Microsoft Planner with premium plans | Integration with the Microsoft ecosystem and upgraded project-planning features | It is not a feature-for-feature replacement for Project Online |
| Marketing and creative operations | Adobe Workfront | Demand management, review and approval, proofing, resources, and marketing planning | Its marketing-centric model may not suit engineering or construction |
| PMO budgeting and portfolio governance | Wrike | Intake, stage gates, budgets, resource allocation, RAID logs, and reporting | Confirm the exact financial and resource features included in the selected package |
| Construction and capital projects | Oracle Primavera P6 EPPM | CPM scheduling, cost-and-schedule control, resource loading, and multiproject planning | More complex to implement than a lightweight SaaS work-management tool |
| Strategic portfolio management | Planview | Investment prioritization, strategic planning, capacity, and governance | Usually excessive for teams that only need task and project tracking |
1. Smartsheet: best overall for cross-functional enterprise work
Smartsheet is a practical middle ground between a spreadsheet and a formal project portfolio management system. Teams can manage work in a familiar grid while the PMO builds standardized templates, dashboards, intake processes, approvals, and portfolio rollups.
Its Enterprise offering includes Control Center, which supports blueprint-driven project creation and repeatable governance. That matters when an organization runs hundreds of similar initiatives and needs consistent fields, milestones, reporting, and permissions.
#1 Best Overall

Its sturdy structure enhances load-bearing capacity to avoid deformation; all parts are firmly fixed to prevent falling, ensuring overall stability and durability of the desktop organizer
- Save Space: Documents are organized by the vertical file folder organizer. Tiered letter tray is suitable for planner, paper, letters, books, magazines, mail, bills and phones. - Elegant & Practical Decor: Classic black finish complements any office, school or dorm decor, serving as both a practical home office storage and organization tool and a sleek desktop decor to show your professional style, ideal for users who pursue a tidy, aesthetic workspace
Smartsheet is particularly attractive when adoption is a bigger risk than scheduling complexity. Contributors can work in a format that resembles a spreadsheet, while executives receive portfolio-level views. However, do not assume ordinary workload tracking is equivalent to full resource management: Resource Management by Smartsheet is a separate premium capability.
2. Asana Enterprise: best for rapid adoption
Asana is one of the easier enterprise platforms for business teams to adopt. It supports projects, tasks, portfolios, goals, workflows, forms, approvals, and workload views without requiring every employee to understand formal scheduling terminology.
Asana’s Advanced plan already includes unlimited portfolios, Goals, and Workload, so portfolios are not exclusive to Enterprise. Enterprise adds controls that matter to larger organizations, including SAML, SCIM, audit logs, service accounts, trusted guest domains, admin app management, advanced compliance APIs, and SIEM integrations.
Use Asana when marketing, operations, HR, product, and other departments need a common work-management experience. Treat it differently from a cost-engineering or construction platform. A portfolio showing project status is not the same as earned-value management, detailed cost forecasting, or a CPM schedule.
3. monday work management Enterprise: best for customization
monday work management is a strong choice when different departments need different workflows but the organization still wants centralized administration and reporting. Its boards, automations, dashboards, managed templates, portfolio tools, cross-project dependencies, resource directory, and capacity manager can support a wide range of operating models.
Enterprise capabilities include multi-level permissions, SSO, IP restrictions, enterprise-scale automations and integrations, and an audit-log API. The public materials also describe a 99.9% uptime SLA and up to 25,000 API calls per day, subject to the applicable commercial terms.

Dashboard scale is worth testing: support documentation states that an Enterprise dashboard can combine data from up to 50 boards. Also verify the plan name in the sales quote. monday’s public materials have used both “Enterprise” and “Ultimate” in different product contexts.
4. Jira Plans: best for software and product teams
Jira Plans, available in Jira Premium and Jira Enterprise, is designed for organizations whose delivery data already lives in Jira. A plan can combine work items from boards, spaces, and filters, then provide hierarchy views, dependencies, capacity and velocity planning, and scenario modeling.
The workflow is deliberately separated from live delivery data: open Jira, go to Plans, and create or open a plan. Teams can explore changes in the plan’s sandbox and commit them back to Jira work items when the scenario is approved.
This makes Jira a logical option for software organizations coordinating multiple teams, releases, and dependencies. It also creates a dependency on source-data quality. Inconsistent issue hierarchies, missing estimates, inaccurate capacity, or neglected dependencies can make a polished forecast unreliable.
5. Jira Align: best for agile at enterprise scale
Jira Align is aimed at organizations coordinating strategy, portfolios, programs, value streams, backlogs, capacity, investment, risks, and dependencies across very large environments. It is the more appropriate Atlassian product when planning must connect executive investment decisions with delivery across hundreds or thousands of users and potentially multiple Jira instances.
Jira Align should not be described as the enterprise-priced version of Jira Plans. Atlassian treats them as separate products for different scales, and Advanced Roadmaps/Jira Plans and Jira Align are not currently integrated. An organization should first establish whether it needs multi-team product planning or a broader strategy-to-delivery operating model.

6. Microsoft Planner with premium plans: best for Microsoft 365 organizations
The current Planner experience combines basic Planner work management with premium project-planning capabilities. Depending on licensing, premium plans can provide Goals, Sprints, task history, baselines, portfolios, and other advanced features. The Project Manager agent also requires the appropriate Copilot license.
Microsoft is moving its project-management direction toward Planner, but this transition needs careful interpretation. Project Online is scheduled to retire on September 30, 2026, and Microsoft stopped selling Project Online-only SKUs to new customers on October 1, 2025. Planner is not an identical replacement: Planner portfolios do not list Project Online projects, and Microsoft documents functionality and migration differences.
For an organization already paying for Microsoft 365, Planner may have an attractive total-cost and adoption profile. Before committing, test portfolio reporting, migration, permissions, integrations, and the specific premium features required by project managers.
7. Adobe Workfront: best for marketing and creative operations
Adobe Workfront is built around enterprise marketing and creative workflows rather than generic task tracking. It supports demand management, resource management, review and approval, proofing, reporting, and marketing planning. Adobe describes it as a marketing system of record.

A portfolio groups projects competing for the same resources, budget, schedule, and priority. To navigate to one, the documented path begins at Main Menu > Portfolios, followed by selecting the relevant portfolio.
Workfront can be a strong investment when creative requests, approvals, brand reviews, and campaign schedules are the organization’s central problem. Check package boundaries carefully: Adobe distinguishes Select, Prime, and Ultimate, and Strategic Portfolio Planning is listed as an additional capability in the Prime package rather than a universal feature.

8. Wrike: best for PMO budgeting and portfolio governance
Wrike combines project execution with many of the controls a PMO needs before and after approval. Its capabilities include customizable request forms, stage-gate prioritization, portfolio dashboards, budgeting, resource allocation, OKRs, RAID logs, Gantt charts, workload charts, analytics, and configurable Agile or Waterfall workflows.
That makes Wrike a good candidate for professional services, marketing, operations, and enterprise PMOs that want intake, approvals, budgets, and delivery reporting in one platform. It is particularly useful when the first project-management problem is not “how do we assign tasks?” but “how do we evaluate and prioritize incoming work?”

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
During a proof of concept, verify how budgets, forecasts, actuals, resource bookings, and portfolio decisions are represented. A vendor’s use of the word “budgeting” does not by itself establish that the system provides the financial controls your finance team requires.
9. Oracle Primavera P6 EPPM: best for construction and capital programs
Primavera P6 EPPM belongs in a different category from collaborative work-management products. It is designed for critical path method scheduling, large multiproject environments, resource and capacity planning, integrated cost and schedule management, portfolio prioritization, and formal project hierarchies.
P6 is the better fit for construction, engineering, infrastructure, and capital programs where schedule logic, baselines, resource loading, and cost control are central. It supports cloud and on-premises deployment, but an implementation can involve databases, servers, applications, and integrations. That creates more implementation and administration expense than a lightweight SaaS task-management rollout.
Choose P6 because the organization needs controlled schedules and cost-and-schedule integration—not simply because it has a large number of users.

10. Planview: best for mature strategic portfolio management
Planview is suited to PMOs that have moved beyond project status reporting and need strategic portfolio planning, investment prioritization, capacity management, and formal governance. It is best evaluated as a specialist PPM platform rather than as a simple collaboration application.
Planview may be excessive for a company that only needs shared tasks, deadlines, and dashboards. It becomes more compelling when executives need to compare investments, model capacity constraints, align work with strategy, and govern a large portfolio of competing initiatives.
What makes project-management software “enterprise”?
A long feature list or a Gantt chart is not enough. Evaluate the following capabilities separately:
| Capability | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Portfolio and program management | Can executives roll up milestones, risks, dependencies, benefits, status, and investment across projects? |
| Resource and capacity management | Can the system compare demand with availability, skills, utilization, role capacity, and competing commitments? |
| Governance | Can the PMO control intake, approvals, templates, required fields, stage gates, and project standards? |
| Financial management | Can finance track budgets, forecasts, planned versus actual costs, investment priorities, and—where relevant—earned value? |
| Administration and security | Does it support SSO, SCIM, audit logs, granular permissions, API controls, compliance requirements, and centralized administration? |
| Integration | Can it connect to identity, ERP, CRM, BI, finance, HR, engineering, and collaboration systems? |
| Methodology support | Can different groups use Agile, Waterfall, hybrid delivery, stage gates, or industry-specific scheduling? |
How to choose without overspending
- Define the financial decision first. Decide whether the system must control project budgets, compare investments, forecast resource costs, or merely report status. These are different requirements.
- Map the dominant work type. Software delivery, marketing campaigns, internal operations, and construction projects need different scheduling and approval models.
- Separate visibility from control. Ask whether a portfolio view only aggregates information or can actually prioritize investment, model scenarios, allocate capacity, and enforce stage gates.
- Price the full deployment. Include premium resource modules, implementation, migration, administrator time, integrations, training, data storage, support, and any API overage or usage limits.
- Run a representative pilot. Use real examples: one delayed project, one over-capacity team, one budget change, one executive portfolio review, and one permission-sensitive external collaboration case.
- Test the data path. Connect the identity provider and at least one important system such as ERP, CRM, BI, or Jira. A platform that works in isolation may fail when reporting depends on live integrations.
- Check exit and continuity terms. Confirm data export, retention, backup, disaster recovery, residency, encryption-key requirements, and the process for leaving the platform.
Common buying mistakes
- Assuming “Enterprise” means every advanced feature is included. Resource planning, strategic portfolio planning, API access, and compliance features may be plan-gated or sold separately.
- Choosing by user count alone. A large marketing organization may need Workfront, while a smaller construction firm may need P6 because of schedule and cost complexity.
- Treating a Gantt chart as portfolio management. Portfolio control also requires capacity, financial information, prioritization, governance, and scenario analysis.
- Ignoring API limits. monday documents daily API-call limits, while Workfront documents package-dependent API and event-subscription limits. Test planned ERP, BI, automation, and warehouse traffic.
- Assuming cloud enterprise software offers on-premises deployment. Confirm hosting, data residency, disaster recovery, and encryption-key ownership. P6 documents both cloud and on-premises options; many other products are primarily cloud services.
- Believing migration claims without a test. Microsoft Planner is not a feature-for-feature replacement for Project Online, and Project Online is scheduled for retirement. Validate the actual migration path before signing a long-term agreement.
FAQ
What is the best enterprise project management software overall?
Smartsheet is the strongest general choice for cross-functional enterprise work because it combines familiar spreadsheet-style project management with portfolio rollups, dashboards, standardized templates, and PMO governance. It is not automatically the best option for software engineering, construction, or marketing operations.
What is the best enterprise project management software for software teams?
Jira Premium or Enterprise with Plans is usually the better fit when engineering teams already use Jira. Plans support hierarchy, dependencies, capacity and velocity planning, and scenario modeling. Very large organizations connecting strategy to delivery may need Jira Align instead.
Is Microsoft Planner replacing Project Online?
Microsoft is moving project-management capabilities toward the new Planner experience, but Planner is not an identical replacement. Project Online is scheduled to retire on September 30, 2026, and Planner portfolios do not list Project Online projects. Test migration and feature differences before making a decision.
How much does enterprise project management software cost?
Enterprise pricing is often quote-based, and the subscription is only part of the cost. Include premium modules, implementation, data migration, integrations, training, administration, support, and API usage. Compare the total cost with the value of avoided delays, better resource utilization, stronger budget control, and reduced reporting effort.
The Bottom Line
Choose Smartsheet for broad cross-functional work and PMO standardization, Asana for approachable adoption, monday work management for highly configurable workflows, and Jira for software delivery. Select Jira Align for strategy-to-delivery coordination at very large scale, Planner for a Microsoft-centered environment, Workfront for marketing operations, Wrike for intake and PMO governance, Primavera P6 for construction and capital projects, and Planview for mature strategic portfolio management.
