Did DIRECTV buy DISH?
No. DIRECTV did not buy DISH. On September 29, 2024, DIRECTV Holdings and EchoStar agreed to a transaction for DIRECTV to acquire all equity interests in DISH DBS Corporation, which operated EchoStar’s pay-TV business. DIRECTV later terminated the agreement, effective November 22, 2024, after DISH DBS noteholders did not agree to the proposed exchange terms. DIRECTV’s termination announcement and EchoStar’s SEC filing on the proposed deal describe the agreement and its end.
The proposed transaction targeted DISH DBS, not an already-completed merger between DIRECTV and all of DISH Network. It never closed, so it did not make DISH part of DIRECTV.
Which DISH merger actually happened?
EchoStar completed its acquisition of DISH Network on December 31, 2023. DISH Network survived as a wholly owned EchoStar subsidiary. That was the completed merger—not the later, terminated DIRECTV proposal. EchoStar’s 2024 annual report describes the transaction and corporate structure.

What happened to DISH TV and Sling TV?
EchoStar’s filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, listed DISH TV and Sling TV within its Pay-TV business. It reported 6.391 million U.S. Pay-TV subscribers in total as of that date: 4.684 million for DISH TV and 1.707 million for Sling TV. These are EchoStar-reported figures dated June 30, 2026, not a current October 2026 count. See EchoStar’s quarterly filing.
Separately, EchoStar announced that DISH DBS and certain subsidiaries, including DISH Wireless entities, filed prepackaged Chapter 11 cases on June 30, 2026. EchoStar said the restructuring would not affect its brands, customers, operations, or employees. That is the company’s stated expectation at announcement time, not an independent guarantee or a result of a DIRECTV merger. EchoStar’s announcement describes the filing and its expected impact.

Will Dish service change because of a DIRECTV deal?
No service change follows from the proposed DIRECTV acquisition because that agreement was terminated before closing. The cited June 2026 restructuring announcement is a separate development; EchoStar said customers and operations would not be affected by that plan. For a current account, billing, or service question, rely on a direct notice from your provider, since the cited company statements establish the position at their publication dates rather than guaranteeing future service arrangements.

The official materials cited here establish termination of the 2024 agreement and describe developments through June 2026. They do not establish a new DIRECTV acquisition agreement after that termination. Check for a newer company announcement or filing before treating the status as current beyond the dates covered above.
