Digital industry awards can be worth entering when your business has a strong, well-matched project, can document its results, and will use any recognition in sales, marketing, recruiting, or partner outreach. They are a poor bet when the entry and preparation costs displace more valuable work, the category is a stretch, or you have no plan for using the result. Treat an award as a possible credibility asset—not a promised source of customers or revenue.
What an award might—and might not—do for a small business
A peer-reviewed 2014 study examined 10 small and medium-sized businesses that won a major business awards competition. Based on interviews and company documents, the researchers reported short-term improvements in brand identity within business networks and the community, company profile and sales revenue, and employee motivation. The effects were less apparent over the longer term, although most respondents continued to use their awards strategically. The study is a small case study of award winners, not a controlled estimate of the return a small business should expect from entering a digital-industry award. It does not prove the awards caused the reported outcomes or show that every competition delivers similar benefits.
There is no broad, independent numerical estimate of digital-award entry ROI in the sources available here. An award may give a business a useful proof point, but entering does not confer the benefits associated with winning, and visibility claims from organizers are not guarantees of sales. The practical question is whether recognition from a particular program would matter to your customers, prospects, employees, or partners—and whether you can use it effectively.
What does it cost to enter a digital award?
The entry fee is only part of the cost. Add staff time to select a category, gather and verify evidence, write the case, and produce any required video or design materials. Include possible travel or ceremony expenses, plus optional winner materials. Fees may apply to every category, and some are non-refundable.

These official 2026 program examples illustrate how different the costs and rules can be. They are not a market average or a ranking; deadlines and fees should be checked with each organizer before acting.

The currencies, eligibility, fee structures, and submission demands differ, so a low headline price does not necessarily make one award a better value. Compare the full cost and fit, not just the fee.

Use this decision test before entering
- Fit: Is the project eligible, recent enough, and a close match for a specific category? Avoid sending the same story into loosely related categories without tailoring it to each set of criteria.
- Judging: Does the organizer publish its criteria, judging stages, and judges’ relevant expertise? Check whether its rules address conflicts of interest.
- Evidence: Can you explain the objective, work, and outcomes with credible information? Connect your evidence to the category criteria instead of relying only on activity metrics.
- Usefulness: Would a win, shortlist, or feedback help with a real customer, recruiting, sales, or partner need? Check the organizer’s rules for how you may use its name, award mark, or materials.
- Opportunity cost: Would the money and staff time produce more value in another growth activity? There is no universal threshold; use your own business economics and past conversion data.
Estimate the full cost before deciding: multiply the fee by the number of categories, then include preparation hours, any required production work, possible travel or ceremony costs, and optional winner materials. If the entry requires work you cannot reasonably complete or the total would crowd out a more direct business priority, skip it.
What makes a strong award entry?
SME Digital Awards’ 2026 guidance asks entrants to select the most appropriate category, follow its requested materials, and provide objective, category-aligned KPIs. Its published scoring weights are strategy 30%, idea 20%, execution 20%, and results 30%. The guidance cautions that “It is not enough to count the number of impressions, likes, or shares.” It asks entrants to connect audience behavior or perceptions to business results. A clear case typically explains the business context and objective, the audience problem or opportunity, the strategy and idea, what the team executed, and what changed. Use figures with dates, baselines, definitions, and sources. Describe attribution limits: if other factors contributed to an outcome, do not claim the campaign alone caused it. These practices make the case more useful to judges, but they cannot guarantee an award.

Before submitting, identify where recognition could serve a practical purpose: a relevant sales conversation, a case study, recruitment material, a proposal, or partner outreach. Confirm what the organizer permits before displaying its name or mark, and check whether you can share the entry or feedback. If you cannot name a plausible audience and use for the recognition, the award may not justify the effort.

Keep the outcome in proportion. Recognition can support a broader credibility story, but a business should evaluate its value through its own subsequent use and results rather than assume that entering—or winning—will automatically bring more customers.
