Usually, yes: “colleague” and “coworker” often refer to someone you work with, and major dictionaries treat the terms as synonyms in at least some contexts. The distinction is one of emphasis, not a strict rule: “coworker” highlights working together, while “colleague” can suggest a professional peer or someone in the same occupation.

How the meanings overlap

Cambridge defines a colleague as a person in a group who work together and lists “co-worker” as a synonym; its business definition is simply “a person that you work with.” Cambridge defines a co-worker as someone you work with, especially someone with a similar job or level of responsibility. Dictionary.com also connects the terms: it describes “colleague” as a synonym for coworker and defines “coworker” as a person with whom one works.

In ordinary conversation, you can usually use either word for someone you work with. Neither word, by itself, says that the person is your friend, reports to you, holds the same rank, or works on the same team.

When to choose “coworker” or “colleague”

Word Emphasis Example
Coworker The fact that you work together, often in the same organization or workflow. “I’ll ask a coworker to review the figures.”
Colleague A professional relationship, shared occupation, or peer connection. “I met colleagues from other firms at the accounting conference.”

These are useful tendencies, not definitions that settle every case. “Colleague” can describe people in the same profession even when they work for different organizations. For instance, an accountant at one firm might refer to accountants at another firm as colleagues because they share a professional field.

Why there is no absolute boundary

Academic discussions of workplace relationships note that “colleague” does not have a universally fixed scope. “Profession” can point to shared work or occupational identity; “business” can point to a shared institution. Depending on context, “colleague” may be narrower than broad labels such as coworker, employee, staff member, team member, or collaborator.

Researchers may also define these words narrowly for a study. A 2023 article by Christian Kiewitz, Thomas J. Zagenczyk, Mindy Shoss, and Kevin S. Cruz proposes using “coworkers” for people in or working for the same organization who have a required workflow connection, are not in a superior-subordinate relationship with the focal person, and interact through discernible work interdependencies at recognizable intervals. That is a proposed research definition for a particular context—not a universal rule for everyday speech.

Spelling: “coworker” or “co-worker”

Both forms are recognized. Cambridge notes that coworker is the usual US spelling; its dictionary entry is styled co-worker. If you are writing for a workplace, publication, or audience with a house style, follow that convention and use one spelling consistently.

A practical rule for everyday writing

  • Use coworker when the shared work or organizational connection is the main point.
  • Use colleague when you want to emphasize a professional peer relationship or shared occupation, including a connection across organizations.
  • If neither nuance matters, choose whichever sounds natural in context; the terms commonly overlap.

Workplace and regional conventions can influence which word sounds more natural, but they do not create a universal dividing line. The intended relationship and context matter more than a strict distinction.
