Yes, in specific parts of the supply chain—but not as broad strategic allies. Apple and Samsung compete for customers in phones, tablets, watches, and connected-device ecosystems, while some Samsung businesses supply components or manufacturing services to Apple. Apple has also confirmed work with Samsung at its Austin chip facility. The most accurate description is selective cooperation alongside direct competition.
What “working together” means
Samsung Electronics is a large company with businesses in displays, semiconductors, foundry manufacturing, and consumer devices. Apple can buy a component or manufacturing service from one Samsung business while competing with Samsung’s mobile-device business. That is a commercial relationship, not a merger or a shared consumer-electronics venture.
- Supplier relationship: A Samsung business sells Apple a component, such as a display or semiconductor.
- Foundry relationship: Samsung manufactures a chip designed by Apple or made to Apple’s specifications.
- Process collaboration: The companies work on a manufacturing method without combining their consumer-product strategies.
- Corporate alliance: A broader arrangement involving shared products, platforms, branding, or distribution. Public evidence does not establish this kind of alliance.
These distinctions matter when headlines say “Samsung supplies Apple” or “Samsung makes Apple chips”: the specific Samsung business and component determine what the claim actually means.
What Apple has confirmed about Samsung’s Austin chip facility
On August 6, 2025, Apple said it was working with Samsung at Samsung’s fabrication facility in Austin, Texas, on a new chipmaking technology. Apple described the technology as one not previously used anywhere in the world and said the facility would supply chips designed to optimize the power and performance of Apple products, including iPhones sold globally. Apple listed Samsung among the initial partners in its American Manufacturing Program, and its March 26, 2026 update again included Samsung among the program’s initial partners. Apple has not publicly identified the chip models or chip category involved, disclosed production volumes, pricing, or contract duration, or said that the work has reached full-scale mass production. Its announcement also does not establish that Samsung will manufacture all—or most—of Apple’s main iPhone processors. It confirms a particular manufacturing collaboration, not a wholesale transfer of Apple’s chip production.
What Samsung may supply beyond the Austin work
Samsung’s semiconductor and display businesses can interact with Apple separately from Samsung’s phone business. Industry reporting has linked Samsung Display and LG Display to Apple’s 2026 OLED lineup, but the report does not establish exact volumes, per-panel prices, or a universal arrangement across Apple products. 9to5Mac’s June 2026 report.

For any claim about memory, image sensors, displays, or other components, the relevant questions are which Samsung business is involved, which Apple product and generation the claim concerns, and whether the information is confirmed or reported. Supplier mixes may vary by product, production year, capacity, and region; available evidence does not establish a precise percentage of Apple displays supplied by Samsung in 2026 or a category in which Samsung is Apple’s largest supplier.
Why Apple and Samsung might cooperate
For Apple, a Samsung manufacturing relationship can add capacity, offer another geographic option, and draw on Samsung’s manufacturing expertise. Apple has framed its American Manufacturing Program as an effort to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and supply-chain capacity. Working with multiple suppliers can also give Apple more flexibility than relying on a single source for every component or process.

For Samsung, Apple orders can bring revenue beyond Galaxy devices, help use manufacturing capacity, and provide a prominent customer for a process or component business. The companies can set specifications, quality requirements, and commercial terms for a supplier transaction while continuing to compete for the person who buys the finished device.
Neither company’s precise commercial motives or contract terms are public in the Austin announcement. The benefits above explain why such arrangements can make business sense; they are not disclosed contract details.

Where the rivalry remains direct
Apple and Samsung compete across several finished-product categories. Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report identifies Apple as a major competitor and describes competition in mobile devices and related markets. Samsung Electronics’ 2026 first-quarter interim report.
| Category | Apple | Samsung |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphones | iPhone | Galaxy S and Galaxy Z |
| Tablets | iPad | Galaxy Tab |
| Watches | Apple Watch | Galaxy Watch |
| Software ecosystem | iOS and Apple services | Android, Google services, and Samsung’s software layer |
Their ecosystems differ as well as their hardware. Apple controls much of the iPhone’s hardware-and-software stack. Samsung’s Galaxy phones use Android and Google services, alongside Samsung software and products. Buyers therefore compare not only specifications but also app and service ecosystems, cloud synchronization, wearable compatibility, privacy and security features, AI offerings, and how long their existing devices and accounts will remain useful to them.

Why a supply deal does not end the competition
A component transaction is narrower than a consumer-brand partnership. Samsung can sell a component or manufacturing service that contributes to an iPhone while selling Galaxy phones that compete with it. Apple can buy from Samsung while continuing to design its own products, control iOS, and compete for the same customers. A supplier’s role in one part of a product does not mean the two companies share the product’s brand, software, or customer relationship.
Apple’s own manufacturing announcements also put Samsung among multiple partners, rather than presenting it as an exclusive or universal supplier. Apple named a broader group in its August 2025 announcement and March 2026 update. In July 2026, Apple announced a multiyear commitment exceeding $30 billion with Broadcom for U.S.-produced chips, another example of its work with specialized suppliers. Apple’s Broadcom announcement.
What the relationship means for consumers
Consumers should not infer that a Samsung-sourced component makes Apple and Galaxy devices interoperable, that iOS will run on Galaxy phones, or that the companies are developing a combined device ecosystem. Nor does a supplier relationship by itself show that a product will be cheaper, better, or more reliable.
Supplier choices can affect manufacturing capacity, component availability, and production resilience, but the Austin announcement does not disclose enough to predict a change in product prices or a specific consumer benefit. When comparing phones, tablets, or watches, evaluate the finished products and ecosystems—not the identity of a component supplier.
How to assess future Apple–Samsung headlines
- Identify the Samsung business. Is the claim about Samsung Display, Samsung Semiconductor, Samsung Foundry, or Samsung’s mobile-device operation?
- Identify what is involved. A display, memory chip, image sensor, foundry service, or main application processor are distinct arrangements.
- Check the evidence. An Apple or Samsung announcement, regulatory filing, or earnings report is different from an analyst’s speculation or an anonymously sourced report.
- Separate exploration from a contract. In May 2026, Reuters reported that Apple had explored Samsung and Intel as possible U.S. chipmaking partners for device processors, citing a Bloomberg report. That was reported exploratory discussion, not confirmation of a completed production contract. Reuters’ report via Investing.com.
- Check the product and timing. A future possibility, one product generation, or one region does not establish a supplier arrangement for every Apple device.
In particular, the reported processor discussions do not establish that Samsung has won a broad contract to manufacture Apple’s main iPhone chips. Apple’s public Austin announcement confirms chipmaking work and intended chip supply, but does not specify the chip category or scale.
